Fuzzical Fighter wasn't exceptionally great, but it took a bold step by combining SHMUPS with JRPGs, even if it was limited to talking to the mayor of each town and buying upgrades in shops.

Lagrange Point IS pretty good. It's far from perfect though, and you won't be doing any real exploring, save for the world map(s).

The graphics and sound (seriously, they crammed an earlier version of the Genesis sound chip in the cart) are fucking incredible though, least for the NES, complete with a fully animated cutscene. I've heard it wasn't translated perfectly, but I don't know. It's worth it to play for the sheer spectacle, at least.

>>3110770
One of the best all around games for the NES. Never mind the American NES version wrecks the JP version. Fucking awesome game.

>>3110538
Chaos World. It's a bit rough around the edges, but the story is pretty damn impressive...Until it falls apart at the end. Religion, female villains sleeping around, it's pretty damn dark and serious, like I said, until the end.
>>
>>3111754
NES JRPGs aren't much of a time investment compared to later ones. You'd know that if you'd played any of them.
>>
>>3111776
>The graphics and sound (seriously, they crammed an earlier version of the Genesis sound chip in the cart) are fucking incredible though, least for the NES, complete with a fully animated cutscene.

Seconding this. If you're not gonna play Lagrange Point or Moryo Senki Madara, should still listen to the soundtrack since it's pretty good and impressive for a 8-bit system.

Honestly I think action-based games like Radia Senki and Crystalis are better, less grindy, and less dated than games like FF1 and especially DQ1 (at least DQ1 is short). For me Mother 1 is right up there with the best FF/DQ games for NES.

Also you're right, there were a lot of third-rate RPGs made for NES and other consoles and most of them aren't worth playing, But using your logic I could say even the NES FF/DQ games aren't worth playing since there are dozens of better RPGs from the SNES/PS1/PS2 eras that are probably more worthy of your time.
>>
>>3111789
Have this one too. It's one of the ones that stuck in my mind (and one of the few times you're not driving a vehicle).

https://youtu.be/ZAF6XvwdW_s

>>3111815
Crystalis is a hell of a lot of fun to play as is a lot of others. But there's a lot of shit to slog through on the NES. Still think FF 1-3 and DQ 1-4 (esp 4) are must plays though. I want to throw Xexyz and Guardian Legend in there too, even though they're more shoot-em-ups with RPG/exploration elements.
>>
>>3111552
Tell me more.
>>
>>3110538
Sansara Naga - you train a dragon by feeding him monster corpses
his growth changes based on the monsters you feed him and the way you act in battle (if you run away a lot you'll get an obedient but cowardly green dragon for example)
your character doesn't level up, you have to upgrade his weapons and armor
you make money by selling monster corpses

I also like the card based combat in DBZ III Rissen Jinzou (or something like that)
>>
>>3110538
Megami Tensei II is quite good, but I don't think the original has been translated. Play the fan translation of the SNES remake if you want to check it out.

Zelda 2 and Faxanadu are pretty good side scrolling RPGs. Rambo also falls in the genre, but isn't as good really.
A personal favorite of mine is The Guardian Legend, which combines space shooter stages with a Zelda-like ARPG world exploration. Lots of weapons and other powerups to collect, and a futuristic setting.
>>
>>3114690
Battle of Olympus, Castlevania II and Rygar are some other side-scrolly games with RPG elements that are worth playing/excellent IMO.
>>
>>3114703
Ah yeah, never played Rygar, but I have sure as hell played Castlevania II (despite the horrible translation) and Battle of Olympus (on the GB, however). I can't help but feel there's probably a few more out there, but I wouldn't count a few of them as RPGs, depiste being borderline. For example Rad Gravity definitely has the progression of an RPG, but not much of the mechanics, and viceversa Kid Icarus has RPG mechanics but not the progression (which is kinda linear and stage-based). River City Ransom I would count as a beat'em up RPG, however.
>>
>>3110770
Because of this post, I might go buy a copy. There's a play n trade by me with two copies and they're each $10~
Skipped lut on buying them in the past because I previously bought Dungeon Magic, which is a kinda poo poo first person dungeon crawler, and Life Force.
I also didn't do much research on the game to know if it was a fun game to play.
>>
>>3114730
I saw a bunch of posts shilling this in this thread (to my surprise!). I rented it several times as a kid and I used to feel like I was the only person that enjoyed this game (my brothers never got into it and would cringe when I'd rent it - AGAIN). Count myself as another proponent for this amazing, unique title.

All those NES JRPGs but nobody mentioned Dragon Slayer? Sure, it is not a NES original but it's still a fun Action RPG. I think it's even one of the first JRPGs in existence, before DQ and FF were released in japan.

I don't think the first Dragon Slayer was released for NES. We had the sequels like the Famicom version of Xanadu (Fa(micom)xanadu) and Legacy of the Wizard, but not the original.

>I think it's even one of the first JRPGs in existence, before DQ and FF were released in japan.
So was Hydlide, and that game actually had a NES port, but it's still fucking awful.
>>
>>3114909
Hydlide 3 (same as Super Hydlide on Genesis) is actually half-decent. Very grindy and didn't age well, but it was pretty innovative for the time.

I kinda have a soft spot for the game, actually. It's not "good" but has a bit of charm. It's like the granddad of open world action rpgs, as clumsy as it is. And the genesis version has real catchy tunes.
>>
>>3114759
I don't even know why I lied to myself. I was gonna buy the Magic of Scheherazade, but ended up getting Willow instead.
>>
>>3114759
I'm also surprised at how much love it has. It's just a really fun Action/turnbased RPG hybrid with music that I think sounds great.

The Japanese version's also a lot different. Lower quality music (think 85-86 NES sound), the art has a '50s Astro Boyish look to it, but the world maps and dungeons are a hell of a lot more complex. Not in necessarily in a good way though. They did a hell of a job bringing it over here.

>>3115590
>>3114690
Faxanadu is amazing, hell one of the most atmospheric NES games I've played. I just wish it was a bit longer, for what it was. Legacy of the Wizard is cool too, but feels so different that most would never know the two are related.
>>
>>3116227

>>
>>3116406
Faxanadu is a different game entirely.
>>
>>3116423

>>
>>3110756
Underrated post and I guess not many people gave it a try. It plays a bit like a proto Seiken Densetsu 3, faster paced than SoM.
>>

That team did go defunct, though.
