It's a pretty easy alternate route you have to take during the final escape sequence. There's no real benefit or penalty either way unless you're rubbish at the jumps during the vertical portion and can't spare the time.

Now that's something I found really enjoyable about Fusion. All the escape sequences from SA-X were neat as well. Everything felt more like survival/investigation than other 2d Metroids, at the time I thought it was a good change of pace from the more open exploration thing since Fusion is extremely linear.
