Why were NES games so colorful, bright and crisp?
>>
Compared to what?
>>
>>3098580
NES had no yellow color.
>>
>>3098582
well look how they try to make 8 bit games today and they look like shit. NES had a difffeel to it
>>
Sega Master System displays more colors and has native RGB output so it looks far better. It's a shame that the sound chip is so awful.

I think op is being ironic.
Most early NES titles aren't praised for being bright and crisp.

I think it has more to do with developers. Some games have absolutely horrible colors. Off the top of my head, games such as Jeopardy and other cash-grab games look horrendous, as usual.

Anyone else upgrade from Ice beam to Wave Beam and was then unable to locate the Ice Beam again that is necessary to kill the Metroids later on in the game?

When you're working with that few pixels you have to go for high contrast to make shapes stand out.

Ignore every above post.

The NES is physically incapable of displaying colors other than these. IIRC when developing Metal Gear on NES the developers were annoyed that the NES's color palette was so saturated because it wasn't the mood they wanted.

Why did the Genesis have such a shit color palette? Barely better than a NES.

>>
>>3098580
They weren't crisp, faggot millenial. You're playing them with an emulator on an LCD. On real hardware they were blurry as fuck. And when the hardware only has a handful of colors to display from, of course it's going to be colorful.

what's the problem with master system sound?it's far better than the NES.

That's a bit inaccurate. Devs had a limited palette to work with, but they were able to choose the colors in the palette.
>>
>>3098580
They weren't on a CRT.
>>
>>3098590
>It's a shame that the sound chip is so awful.
It depends on the version of the Master System you're using.
With the FM chip present on the original Japanese SMS/Mark III the sound is far superior to the NES. Without it, I can agree the sound quality is a bit inferior but some composers were still able to do wonders with the very limited hardware.

>colorful
You only have 54 colors, from all over the rainbow. If you want to "tint", you end up with just a handful colors. Better to go all out and use what's there.

>bright
That would be your TV, and that the palette lacks some darker colors

>crisp
Resolution. You only have 8x8 pixels per tile, and only a couple hundred tiles on screen. So what ever you do, you must communicate it through these few pixels. And it needs to survive an RF signal
>>
>>3098829
The colors posted in >>3098651 are ALL the colors the NES could do. Devs could pick subsets of these colors for their 4-color palettes for tiles and 3-color palettes for sprites.
>>
>>3098839
PSG chips are pretty underrated in general because no one knew how to do anything with them.

Five actually, but only two had bitmapped graphics, the rest were vertical lines/dots.

>>3098587
Nostalgia.
>>
>>3099296
That almost looks as good as OP. Almost.
>>
>>3099875
That's a SNES game. Completely different palette and color capabilities.
>>
>>3099886
And yet, that particular shot is inferior to the original. Though still quite good.

Capabilities are often divorced from artistic value.

The first 5 minutes of Super Metroid is just unmatched.
>>
>>3098580
NES Metroid is so fucking ugly.
>>
>>3099934
I forgive it for its beautiful colors and patterns.

>>3098585
What are you talking about I can see two shades of yellow in OP's pic right now.
>>
>>3098670

That actually means you grew up with a piece of shit tv. Any mid-range CRT will leave visible pixels.

NES GAMES SO BRIGHT AND CRISP
>>
>>3102089
it would help your case to use an image without such a dark scanline filter, or at least make it brighter to compensate
>>
>>3102093
Not to mention an actual NES game.
