Thanks, that was a good read (especially the n-sider article linked there), although it doesn't have any actual quotes from R&D1 guys saying they didn't care about Mario, I think it's all speculations from the guy writing the article, or at least it seems to me, but it makes sense anyway.

I highly doubt that. I'm not even going to look into usenet posts in the mid-90s looking for a handful of arguments of a "rabid fanbase" that never existed.
