Because we don't have a way to get RGB inputs into our TV's or monitors, so instead of using the best solution (one that uses csync), a lot of us decided to hijack a plug that nothing here uses and isn't even produced in mass quantities anymore for DIY jobs, and run all our shit from there through an additional converter to BNC. A->C->B is less simple than A->B. ('C' is SCART)
