Why are NES games so awesome?
It only counts as bait when you try to instigate negative, angry responses
Friendly bait is good bait
My theory about NES games: only two main buttons and not too much storage space so games get right to the damn point, but they still have different levels and endings and stuff, so it's the right balance
Because each cartridge, as well as the system itself, is built of precious Nintendium.
>>3092660
yeah, the two button system is the very essence of magic.
>>3092494
Because a lot of quality games of multiple genres were made for the nes. Games focused on gameplay and there were many with top quality gameplay.
>>3092494
Because no one still knew what in the name of fuck they were doing with code and hardware. Lotsa room to just go for it and see what happens.
>>3092773
"buttons" in the context of, especially old, game controllers refers to face buttons. These are non-directional buttons to perform specific actions within the game. They also differ from utility buttons, like start, which perform meta actions.
>>3092660 used main buttons to refer to primary action inputs. Neither start nor select are designed to be used in such a way, even if game designers can use them for in-game mechanisms.
Your desire to be a technically correct thread shitter has been acknowledged and disapproved of. Have a bad day.
>>3092786
>no one still knew what in the name of fuck they were doing with code and hardware
They still don't. They're just playing it economically safe now, by doing the same thing over and over again, instead of experimenting
>>3092792
Calling NES games "two button" is bad because it fails to distinguish them from real two button games, eg. pinball.
>>3092494
Because they-OH DEAR GOD WHAT IS THAT FILTERED MESS?
>>3092494
>NES games so awesome
There's, like, Mario and Contra and a few schmups. No other games on the system is still worth playing.
>>3092918
You arent worth playing you unfun bastard
I love the NES so much. I have the most nostalgia for NES. Some Sega Genesis and the add ons too since I grew up with all of them. NES might possibly be my favorite system though. It has some flaws but since I've been playing it for so long it doesn't really matter. I love the 8 bit style and it is really pretty damn timeless. People still make those style of games.
>>3092918
Pic related is why you're wrong.
>>3092795
They at least have a bible of things to fall back on now.
Back in the mid 80s-early 90s they were still seat of the pants.
>>3092795
>they're playing it safe
if they released a buggy mess like ET today there would be an actual lawsuit. Even our worst today is still better than their worst back then, even if it's much more boring.
it's not all bad.
built to entertain without the advantage of easy graphical thrills
I got my first taste of NES when I was a kid and got Animal Crossing on GC, I basically stopped playing the real game after a point and just used action replay to get all of the NES games. Was a great experience.
I think NES games are awesome because the hardware was finally good enough for console games to really show some personality. PCs had their clever adventures and arcades had some great stuff of course, but as much as I love my 2600 it was a bit too limited to really show the kind of personality that we later saw in NES games.
>>3092925
All those 'lesser known' games and no mention of Joy Mech Fight. Impressive.
>have a bunch of podcasts I'm behind on
>play through NES rpgs
O&A accompanied me on DQ 1-4
>>3092494
Be sure that the power of the console is off before you insert or take out the cartridge.
Press "RESET" key, your score will disappear immediately and start the game again.
>>3092838
pinball is not a video game, and again, in the context of controllers, the count by convention excludes directional input and meta buttons
>>3092927
>They at least have a bible of things to fall back on now.
which makes the current state of development so terribad. We have a small history of experiments, but are completely oblivious to it. Instead we just evolve a tiny subset of almost-games, over and over again, making them a tiny bit worse each time. It's been regressing, and everyone involved seems to be cool with it.
>>3092946
I'm under the impression that ET is not that buggy to begin with, the hate for it is overhyped. That said, look at the glitches in modern games. Just because they retreated onto a different level, doesn't mean they're gone. In fact, quality control has gone severely downhill, because devs and pubs think they can just patch it later, if they can be bothered. Plenty of "games" and up in early access.
As for the release of such a buggy mess resulting in a lawsuit, I don't think a single Bethesda game ended up in a lawsuit.
>>3092918
Wew lad.
>>3092494
They weren't trying to be movies. They embraced a lot of what makes games unique as a medium.
I'm more of a Master System guy. Similar systems, but the MS had a much better library.
>>3093582
I haven't played a lot of sms games yet, but I plan to go through the sms library as well. Currently on my list I have the alex kidd trilogy (i don't like the second one), ys, phantasy star, zillion, golden axe and maybe wonderboy (but i'm really bothered by playing through wonderboy because i played through all the adventure island games - can I skip the first wonderboy game?)
>>3092494
they're not that great.
NES is easily the worst retro Nintendo console.
>>3093610
The first Wonder Boy is great, but III is probably the best and Monster World is also very good. I don't know what Adventure Island is.
Also play Transbot, Tazmania, the Sonic games, Rescue Mission, Ninja Gaiden, Teddy Boy, Cyber Shinobi, Alladin, Dracula, Galaxy Force, Ghostbusters, Ghost House, My Hero, and maybe try some of the Mega Drive ports. If you're American you might have to import all the post-1990 MS games. I don't think many were released over there.
>>3092494
>Cancertendo
>good
Pick one
>>3093725
thank you for the games! yes of course ninja gaiden! i forgot! and sonic as well but i wanted to play the genesis version first and then the master system port.
>>3093801
They're different games. Also Sonic 2 and Sonic Chaos for MS.
What's duck hunt like?
>>3093806
i know. that's why i would a port in the first place. but i prefer first to play on the console it was designed for. and then ports.
>>3093856
lets try this again. they're NOT ports, they're completely different games.
>>3093812
Gay eroge. You literally hunt for dicks.
>>3093951
it still a port of the original genesis version with adjusted 8bit gameplay in my opinion.
>>3093979
>Jesus, why did I read it as "dick?"
I think you know, anon. I think you know.
>>3092494
They have better graphics, better sound.
Better controls. Better game design.
It's almost like video games started off as great, then slowly devolved.
It's sick, really.
>>3094039
That is just not true, it has few to no similarities with the MD version.
>>3094901
okay mate i agree with you - i don't wanna fight
i will play the genesis vers and then the sms vers
>>3092494
I don't know what game this is supposed to be, but...
>spanish name
>0 points
>0 coins
>level 1 out of 1 total level
>time field incorrectly labeled; "400" is not a "time," but a number
>is dreary and looks like it's probably going to rain (how depressing, i don't want to play this)
>nothing to see or interact with at all, just some bushes and shrubs
>out-of-place looking ground tiles completely break any sense of immersion
>player avatar just standing there doing nothing, how boring
I'm willing to entertain that NES games are, in fact, great but you might have picked a better example because this one's clearly not helping your case.
>>3095993
lel people will still fall for it
>>3093729
This.
>>3095993
>spanish name
It's clearly Occitan you retard
The nostalgia is priceless. Got an NES around 1st grade, watched it changed culture forever
>>3092838
Who cares?
>>3094305
to be fair, it's easy to ignore the really terrible NES games now that they're 30 years old or nearly there.
>>3096475
Nah, Romanian clearly. Probably this game is about a gypsy.
>>3092494
They're simple.
because it's :OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I love NES games They have HD graphics
>>3092494
Full games at release; no graphical and/or server problems at release; simple and straightforward game objective; replay value helped by a lot of hidden things you didn't notice.
>>3096797
256x240 pixels of high definition graphics.
>>3092925
I feel bad since I've never heard of any of those games.
>>3093610
>can I skip the first wonderboy game?
If you must, I guess. I don't see why it bothers you. Even if you've played AI you might as well give the original version of the game a spin to see what it is like. It's not like you have to finish it and there is nothing to gain from ignorance.
>>3098714
True, but truth is I already tried it out and the levels are almost identical to the nes clone (i just played all AI titles last month so I am bit fatigued to play wonderboy 1)
Because Atari didn't have this shit and was plagued with shitty games. Most NES games are actually shit but there's still like 200 games worth playing
>>3092494
>only two main buttons and not too much storage space so games get right to the damn point, but they still have different levels and endings and stuff, so it's the right balance
This. When I sit down to play some retro vidya, I almost always gravitate to my NES. Games are just so quick to get in and out of, I'm never bored.
>>3097028
>256x240
>not 1080p
What nes are you playing?
>>3092946
Atari ET isn't buggy dude, you just never read the manual. It sucks, but it's well coded. The creator is actually very well respected and made some great games.
>>3099745
The problem is even the creator admits that ET was a failure and that he violated his own rules while making that game.
His entire design philosophy was "players shouldn't have to read the manual to get it".
>>3099735
Holy fuck are you trying to trigger the whole board?
>>3099735
this actually looks really good. Thanks, I was so ignorant because of my retro privilege and retro supremacy of the board that I could not see the milleniogyny,
>>3093430
>They weren't trying to be movies.
Then why was Ninja Gaiden so great?
>>3098698
Don't feel bad, this just means you have plenty of cool stuff to discover and enjoy
>>3099789
Yes, correct. All I'm saying is: game sucks, is not buggy.
>>3099735
not gonna lie, if someone was dead-set on playing on an HDTV I'd probably set something like this up. probably would look better than the actual thing on such a screen.
>>3100210
>milleniogyny
