First time playing this. Thought it was meant to be a strategy game. I just equip every slid with the highest stat items (go smash a few heads at the arena if I do t have the funds) and trounce almost every mission (the only time I fail is when MC gets killed when somehow his body is fucking one hit KO, pseudorandom bullshit). Is it just because I'm playing easy mode?

Also can someone explain why enemies will occasionally target each other? It always misses (through the magic of chaff grenades) and their missile four doesn't decrease. Just a DS glitch?

I've only played the SNES version, so this may not apply, but the game is very badly balanced. The only difficult mission is the Hell's Wall one, and that one is a joke because the AI is extremely bad. The slow gameplay becomes stale because there is so little variation and challenge over the course of the game. Not to mention the game itself is poorly designed; for instance you can only move then attack, not attack then move. It's a shame because I think this game had a lot of potential.

I don't ever recall the enemy attacking itself tho. Maybe just DS, but that seems weird. Are you sure it's not the enemy attacking an NPC?

>Hells Wall
Haha funny you should say. That one was the one I was stuck on because when I went to attack one of the main enemies, he'd insta-kill MC and it was just frustrating to clear 90% of the map and then lose.

Also it's the mission where I kept seeing them attacking each other. It had happened before and I just assumed it was like you said, attacking NPCs. Then on three different attempts I watched one of the main enemies attack his teammate. I thought it was meant to be a cinematic thing, like they're so crazy they attack each other, or he's realising their losing so seppuku or some shit. Always missiles, always misses due to chaff, stock doesn't depletes.

Fuck I dunno!

Ok, maybe it's coming back to me.

Could the AI be aiming for you, but another AI wanzer is in the way, so that it gets hit instead of you?

To easily win that level and see how bad the AI is, just hole your wanzers up into a corner. If you take out an enemy wanzer's arms, DO NOT KILL IT. It will path to your characters and act as a shield from the OP Hell's Wall wanzers. After they use up all their missles, you can take popshots all day long at them with a infinite-ammo long-range grenade-launcher. Once you kill/disable the bosses, take out the mooks and then clean up the last of the bosses.

Unfortunately, that is the only challenge in the game. After this mission it's all down hill from there in the difficulty department, which is too bad.

>Is it just because I'm playing easy mode?
Easy mode as in 0.5x difficulty? Then yeah, obviously you're gonna steamroll everything. Although, all of the difficulty settings are locked until you've beaten the game once. Are you playing a used copy? Other than that, the standard difficulty OCU scenario isn't too taxing; there is a difficulty spike or two depending on how you manage characters' levels. The USN scenario is balanced better but still bound to the bare bones basic rules of the original.

>Also can someone explain why enemies will occasionally target each other?
This is actually enemies shooting chaff grenades at each other to apply the chaff buff. In the SNES version, I don't believe enemies could do this or even use items at all (not 100% sure, been ages since I've played that version). I can see how it's a bit confusing since the game doesn't display a buff symbol on the unit. If you hover over a unit, it'll show what buffs/debuffs it has on the second screen (a decent improvement over the original).

I didn't select easy mode, just at the start it said "American guy (for novices)" and "Japanese guy (for advanced)" so I'm playing American guy, is that why it's easy?
>>
>>3093286
Also "applying a buff" - wierd because it's never like I've noticed any trouble trying to kill them, if I was doing less damage or missing I just assumed that had advanced Wanzers... Still easily cleared the mission. My strategy is "give every robot the exact same layout except MC who gets whatever good drops I've gotten, pick enemies off at a distance until they get too close then use guns". Worked so far...

you just described the game in a nutshell
>>
>>3093197
Yep, Hell's Wall is the first difficulty spike. Ignore the strategy in >>3093210 ; it seems like it would be a terribly slow way to beat the mission. Instead, stock up on flash grenades and stuff everyone's backpack with them (and maybe a heal or two). In FM1, flash grenades are ridiculously useful; it's a guaranteed long range stun that takes an enemy out for one to three turns (unless you attack it, which has a random chance to break stun). The basic idea is to keep your group together and focus on one pair of HW at a time. Stun missilers when they get in range; keep them stunned until you can kill them in a single turn. There are a fair amount of bottlenecks on the map, so short-range specialists that can't attack something should try to stun something. If someone runs out of flash grenades, resupply using the truck (assuming you have any leftover).

>>3093381
No, after you beat the game, difficulty settings that affect enemy HP and damage start unlocking. I wasn't sure if maybe you had a pre-owned copy of the game that had these options already unlocked. After you pick a scenario, if they were unlocked, you would then be asked to pick a difficulty (the easiest setting would cut enemy HP and damage by 1/2). I was just a little confused when you said easy mode whether you were referring to the scenario selection or the difficulty options.

>>3093382
There's four status effects in the game. "Chaff" reduces the accuracy of all incoming long range attacks. "Smoke" (from smoke grenades) reduces a unit's accuracy on all attacks they do. "Acid" (from acid bombs) reduces a unit's defense. And "Flash"/"Stun" (from flash grenades and melee skill) are the similar. "Stun" means "Flash" is wearing off and the unit will be able to attack on its next turn.

>>3093453
Indeed it is a terrible strategy, but it's what got me through the mission on my first try. I didn't know what I was in for, and only survived per the bad AI.
>>
>>3091912
God damn, I need to load up my save file again. FM is such an awesome game. Is that DS remake any good, or should I keep playing my translated SNES rom?
>>
>>3091912

The game is tremendously easy for the better part but I don't know, I still enjoy it. It reminds me a lot of Shining Force; bunch your units into a formation, goat the enemy into coming to you and you'll win most scenarios. And then when you start to get skills, got damn. Complete overkill, taking out bosses in one turn with your misslers.

Despite that I still enjoy it for some reason. Probably just because I really enjoy Mecha games.

If you're a fan of the rest of the series, I'd say the DS version is worth playing at least once. In addition to the original (OCU) scenario, there's a new 23 mission USN scenario. Also both scenarios have a small amount of hidden missions that help flesh out the story and link to characters/events from the other games. Unfortunately, the game occasionally runs a bit sluggishly (possibly because it's an enhanced port of the PS version), so turn Speed and Battle Speed to Fast in the game options.

>>3094630
Wait secret mission? Care to give a few hints to finding them if they're missable? I'm not going to have to revisit and retake to every person in every pub and every town after each mission am I?
>>
>>3095063
There's four hidden missions in the OCU scenario and five in the USN scenario. They generally unlock by reentering the Military Ward/Command Room after receiving your next mission or talking to certain NPCs a couple times. They all have a small window when you can unlock them. If you really don't want to miss any, just use LegaiaRules' faq on gamefaqs.

I heard that the fan translation is a lot better than the DS version. Am I going to be missing out on much if I just play the DS version anyways?
>>
>>3097613
The most important thing the fan translation does is that it portrays Royd as mentally unhinged after the events in the intro and that he never really recovers by the end of the game. There's other minor stuff like cussing and referring to UCS by its canonically correct name, USN.

The DS version beats the fan translation in pure content. Although, the added cameos and event references to later games in the may not mean anything to you if you haven't played them.

I'd say stick with the DS version, and if you're interested in the rest of the series, play through some of them and come back to the fan translation later.
