I've played the arcade in the late 90's in yurop and it was a well made game, however it left me a grim feel.

I'm guessing Konami must've realized that, because the sequels toned down the ominous-ness by a fair bit, and then the fourth game was straight up Burnout in terms of tone.

...which is kinda amusing considering it's apparent that Thrill Drive was a huge inspiration for Criterion.
