How is there surround if there are only two audio plugs coming from the console (L&R)?

Is it fake surround with two speakers that makes it sound more surrounding?
Or is it real surround that you hook up to your 5.1 or 7.1 setup.

People still do this? I thought virtual surround created with any 2 stereo speakers/headphones is more practical. No need for any fussy setup.
