Super Russian Roulette
New ZAPPER-Based game for NES. Will be optimised for both NTSC and PAL (separate versions).
Does not require a CRT! It mostly just uses the trigger, there are a couple of things you can shoot onscreen, but you can press a button on regular controller to activate those things if using a non-CRT.
It is a Kickstarter project. It has surpassed it's funding goal by almost 4x. So it's happening.
Over 4 mins of speech! Full screen sprites!
Currently 1 megabyte (yes MEGAbyte) of PRG ROM, and 128 kilobytes of CHR ROM. Custom mapper.
If this thing hits $80000, the CHR ROM will be bumped to 256 kilobytes and the animations will be improved.
Is that the largest game for the NES? Can't be far off.
This won't run on any flashcart. If you want it, you have to get the real thing.
At time of writing there is less than 21 hours to go. $2400 from reaching the $80000 stretch goal of upgrading the CHR ROM.
Check it out at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/batslyadams/super-russian-roulette-a-new-party-game-for-the-ne/widget/video.html

I want those nicer animations!

I've already backed it. Seems cool. I have the Famicom Gun which looks like a real revolver, too. I asked the dev for a Famicom-native version but he said there isn't enough interest. Fair enough, I can either get a cart converter or a controller converter.
fake retro faggot shit
>>3082046
It's made for an actual retro console, not some indie square-pixel """8-bit""" pc game.
>>3082056
the aesthetic is shit. very ms paint
>paying money for this shit
>>3082058
I think it looks fine, mostly. That sprite of the cowboy with his feet on the table looks like shit, but the other ones look fine.
>>3081984
>Currently 1 megabyte (yes MEGAbyte) of PRG ROM
Seriously!? 1MEGABYTE!? Holy SHIIIIIIIT!!
Fuck off.
>>3081984
>Does not require a CRT!
>mfw I temporarily forgot what a CRT even was
I'm probably not backing it, but I do think it is pretty hilarious and an interesting and unique idea for a homebrew. I do hope there is a bit more to it than pure Russian Roulette because if not it seems like it would only be good for a single novelty play at a party before it got old.
Then again, I'm guessing that the idea is for it to be a novelty play. The video makes it sound like it was something that the guy made for the hell of it and people were probably most attracted to the silliness and novelty of it without really thinking if it'd hold up for repeat plays.
>>3082273
>I'm guessing that the idea is for it to be a novelty play.
The party aspect of it seems to be quite intertwined with getting drunk and shooting yourself.
Alcohol seems to play a large factor in it being fun and funny.
You don't play this game alone.
Does it have Famicom cartridge version?
I'd buy a finished product.
>>3082735
>game for normies
I'll pass
>>3082273
it does seem like a good idea for a party game.
>This won't run on any flashcart. If you want it, you have to get the real thing.
laughingelfman.tiff
Seems kinda jewy but the game looks nice I guess. I'd rather pay for Lizard though.
>>3081984
>links the video
>not the page where money gets grifted
ugh, too much trouble to edit the url, pass
>>3082741
If you only play it alone then it def isn't for normies.
>>3081984
Why don't they just make it for a modern platform instead of placing arbitrary restrictions on themselves?
>>3082741
>normies
>>/r9k/
>>3082741
>meme posting
>"normies"
life passed on you
>>3083681
Because then they wouldn't get their hipster cred.

Do any modern platforms actually have a lightgun peripheral like the zapper

Fuck, this board is really turning into /v/
Yeah, I don't like how the game looks, and the idea doesn't really catch my attention, but I'm glad someone gets some exposure for making a nes homebew, as it could encourage more talented guys to make their own homebrews too.
>>3081984
>https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/batslyadams/super-russian-roulette-a-new-party-game-for-the-ne/widget/video.html
Yeah, it looks like they spent more money on the fucking advertisement than on the game. That shit could be slapped together in a day or two. $80000? Fuck that shit. It wouldn't even be worth $80 to develop. All that memory goes to fucking sound recordings. Not impressed.
>>3084207
80,000 dollars is not really a small homebrew game, it's enough money to make a legitimate game
>>3084227*Thinks to self, "I'm a fucking idiot, why haven't I made a kickstarter? I could live for a year easy developing with that money...
>>3084207
>more talented guys
That means these guys are talented to begin with. If you can't see this is a shit game tossed together just to bilk money from hipsters you're naive.
Fuck off.
Kickstarter over.
$80000 stretch goal reached.
>>3084248
>enough money to make a legitimate game
>>3084828
80,000 dollars is a lot more money than the usual 0 dollars that homebrews have.
Cool homebrew, hopefully we still see more. It's unfortunate that this one only looks fun for about three minutes.
so uh why do they need my money if it's already programmed?
>>3085628
Publishing, graphics, playtesting, covering expenses and debts, music, etc.
>>3085631
nah lol
make a site with "pay what you want" with the rom download and then maybe you can have some money
otherwise suck a dick, fags and get real jobs
>>3085641
What good would a download of the ROM be?
He has a custom mapper on his cart.
That means no emulator currently would known how to emulate it.
Furthermore: even the EverDrive N8 doesn't have enough RAM to play it either (N8 can do 512k PRG + 512k CHR). This game is 1024k PRG + 256k CHR.
This needs to be on a cartridge to be played even at all! At least until it is dumped, and then the mapper needs to be reverse-engineered. And then the emulators need to be updated. And then a brand new + more expensive flashcart needs to be produced.
>>3085765
Super Mario Bros.
Super C
Super Turrican
Super Spy Hunter
Super Pitfall
Etc
There were plenty of NES games with "Super" as a prefix.
The precedent was set decades ago. Move on.
>Pay us so we can sell you our already existing game!
Super Jewish Roulette
Can't wait until the ROM is dumped on day one with a mapper swap patch available immediately
>faggot fake retro hipster normie light gun social meme """"game""""
pass
>>3081984
Where is "Now you play with power"
I'm surprised at the extremely negative reaction. This thread feels like it has been invaded by /v/ and /b/.
New homebrew games help stimulate the industry that keeps our hobby alive.
>>3086519
I very much respect homebrew. I think they should sell their game cartridge for $60 and be done with it. That being said, this looks like a novice hacker's demo with a slick ad. The $80k kickstarter is absurd. More over the relatively huge memory is used primarily for voice samples, which circumvents much of the challenge of working with limited hardware resources, a major reason why I respect old game developers and enjoy hacking myself. I'm not impressed because it really does seem to be capitalizing on the hipster cred more than anything else.
>>3081984
So is the game nothing but this Russian Roulette? Doesn't seem like it'd be worth buying outside of the novelty of owning a cart of a homebrew game.
>>3085641
You sure sound like you appreciate people who make games, your opinion of this project or otherwise. "Real job"? Like working at McDonald's?
>>3085786
I imagine that most people who back this either just want to support the project or are wanting to collect something "new." I've never really found homebrew collecting to be that appealing.
>>3081984
Being the 'largest game on the NES' is kind of nothing to be proud of if it's mostly due to the voice clips. The difficulty with NES games was never 'making large games', it was to make big games that still fit on the carts.
Will your hipster game even fit on a NES cart if it's so big? What the hell will you be using eighty THOUSAND dollars for?
>>3086648
> The difficulty with NES games was never 'making large games', it was to make big games that still fit on the carts.
Normies aren't going to buy this game if it will have voice clips from 1990.
Anyway, I still don't know who is the target audience. Yes, it's nice, but the game for Nintendo in 1985+31 year?
>>3086770
>Anyway, I still don't know who is the target audience.
There must have been SOME target.
1090 people pledged. $77 was the average pledge amount. That would suggest most people wanted a box+printed manual.
Stretch goals that were achieved were larger graphics memory, a music player, and 16 extra voice taunts that will be voted on.
I've seen many worse Kickstarters than this.
>>3084390
>a shit game tossed together just to bilk money from hipsters
Well being imaginative is a kind of talent. All of us could be doing it, and no one has. But they did instead. Have to give the props for that no matter how shitty the game looks.
People are always so surprised when a NES game has even the tiniest amount of speech. It's rare and special.
This one has so much speech that this game will be the one people point to and say "you want speech in a NES game? Super Russian Roulette is the one that has it".
This game is mostly a proof-of-concept.
>>3088738
The only talent here is bilking money from hipsters. The game is shit and unimaginative in any way other than how to drop buzz words to bilk money from hipsters.
Just try to imagine what could be done with a team of skilled, creative enthusiasts and $80k. Even without taking into account the amazing shit that could have been done with current hardware and knowledge, the sheer size would let you build a game of epic proportions with nearly limitless choices and results. Instead they chose to fill it with scratchy samples.
>>3090531
>A team of skilled people
>$80k total
Yeah, I'm sure they would all really enjoy working for a month before they went onto a job that paid them what they're worth
>>3090897
Says the unskilled person who's never run a development company and is probably unemployed looking for a minimum wage job.
I've managed lots of development teams and getting skilled people to work on a project they're excited about for $0 or little up front cash is rarely a problem. Last year I gave over 400 hours for $0 developing educational software because it's a good cause and interesting. That's a lot for one person but you get a dozen people to do a fraction of that and you're there.
All this negativity twords a new ip that will be dumped eventually. Who gives a shit what they make or charge? It will end up the same.
>>3084207
Who the fuck would pay money for a homebrew game, especially 80k
>Mods won't delete this fucking thread.
Pack it up lads, we're done.
>>3091629
My guess is they anonymously backed themselves like 90% of their total profit.
I imagine only a few of the most ignorant hipster sheep on the planet (friends and family) bought into this
>>3091692
That kind of thing is very easy for the Kickstarter system to detect.
I doubt it.
There are a lot more hipsters in the world than you think.
>>3081984
Looks cool.I'm only saying that because because this thread is full of un-optimistic fags.
>>3093859
>Looks cool.
That's what I thought.
OP here.
I thought it cool that there would finally be a drinking game for the NES. As an 80s kid it's likely that I'll drink with my friends these days.
Drinking and playing Nintendo will be awesome!
I agree that dedicating most of the memory to speech has its good parts as well as bad, but now that the graphics memory will be doubled: at least it would look much better.
Right up until the $80k mark was passed; I considered un-pledging, but proper graphics cemented my pledge.
As for the complaints that 80k is too much: you try creating and shipping out more than 1000 copies of a physical product. Especially a homebrew that needs PCBs to be manufactured from scratch.
>>3095067
>As for the complaints that 80k is too much: you try creating and shipping out more than 1000 copies of a physical product.
I'd need my cocaine and whores too.
Too bad his game is shit.
A new homebrew? That uses the zapper? Has that ever been done before?
The game looks awful ,take your shill thread and shove it up your candy ass.
