What are your thoughts on this theory? Do not post quotes from the 1UP interview with the designer of the controller, Teiji Goto. He's full of shit and hardly any games follow his "philosophy" (square for menu? top kek).

The fuck're you talking about m8? Just because the picture is of a PS3 controller, doesn't mean it isn't relevant to a PS1 controller. Faggot.

Maybe ps3 is retro to him, since it's what he played when he was 5 years old just like me and NES.

Herro, my name is Ickuru MEETASU. Chief head designer of the praystation controller.
You have done very good work in finding this out, senpai. When I, Ickuru MEETASU designed this controller I got idea from keyboard. Keyboard say to me, "look! look at keys!" so I look at keys and see!
I am very much proud of you for discovering hidden eastel egg.

I just figured they were based on the number of lines used to create the shapes.

Circle = one line
Cross = two lines
Triangle = three lines
Square = four lines

No one uses the Kanji keyboard is more like it. This nigger obviously knows nothing about the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS). The JIS, keyboard layout keeps the Roman letters in the English QWERTY layout, with numbers above them

By design or coincidence?
>>
I just realized that the L button on an SNES/N64 controller is on the [L]eft side and the R button is on the [R]ight side. Could that have been intentional? Is it the same way on a Playstation controller? I always thought they were the [R]ear buttons but they didn't know whether to label them L or R because of Japanese/English phonetics issues, and they just used both to cover their bases.

I think it's pretty obvious this is a coincidence or (more accurately) a contrivance

>Other game companies at the time assigned alphabet letters or colors to the buttons. We wanted something simple to remember, which is why we went with icons or symbols, and I came up with the triangle-circle-X-square combination immediately afterward. I gave each symbol a meaning and a color. The triangle refers to viewpoint; I had it represent one's head or direction and made it green. Square refers to a piece of paper; I had it represent menus or documents and made it pink. The circle and X represent 'yes' or 'no' decision-making and I made them red and blue respectively. People thought those colors were mixed up, and I had to reinforce to management that that's what I wanted.
---Teiyu Goto, Sony engineer

In Japanese the circle has the same meaning as the checkmark. yes/affirmative
The X means no/negative.
This is why Japanese PS1 games have reversed confirm and backout buttons in menus and dialog compared to localized games.
>>
>>3081473
>This is why Japanese PS1 games have reversed confirm and backout buttons in menus and dialog compared to localized games.

Always annoyed me for a bit before I could get used to it.

Yes, this quote is correct. They used the symbols to indicate the purpose of the buttons.
>>
>>3081484
And BASED Kojima had them stay like that in the US release of MGS1. Confusing at first for all of us, but based as hell.

At least I think it was him, someone had to call that one out.
>>
>>3081473
>Do not post quotes from the 1UP interview with the designer of the controller, Teiji Goto
Got his name wrong, but apply the rule, guy.
>>
>>3081034
Cross doesn't begin with an 'x'.
>>
>>3081034
O is commonly associated with 'correct' and X is 'incorrect'.
Triangle was meant to be an arrow for association with maps and interaction. The Square was meant to be a page in a book, for menus.
>>
Bait thread, but eh...
PS1 button design originates from the SNES button design, mantaining the order of the buttons
A = 1st button = 1 Line Shape = Circle
B = 2nd button = 2 Lines Shape = X
X = 3rd button = 3 Lines Shape = Triangle
Y = 4th button = 4 Lines Shape = Square

Literally every other explanation is either a happy coincidence noticed since the very early stages of the design and thus used a "also" explanation(i.e. O confirm, X cancel) or a made up one that only fits because it's made up trying to justify the design(i.e. Square because it represents menus, etc).
>>

>>
>>3081101
>>this keyboard doesn't feature a QWERTY layout

>>
>>3081034
It's the number of lines.
Circle has one line
Cross has two lines
Triangle has three lines
Square has four lines.

I'm not kidding. They're just creatively numbered 1 2 3 4.
>>
>>3082418
Your mom's a letter.

No seriously, that's how retarded the argument is that people want to use the first letter of the english spelling of a greek character.

This thread is straight up retarded.
>>
>>3083369

>>
>>3084621
The word we use to refer to a triangle form is "Triangular".
>>
>>3084621
>>3084613
There are numerous words to describe all those shapes. To assign inconsistent names in order to fit a half-assed theory is the definition of contrived.
>>
>>3084891
It's in order to provide the most comfortable controls possible on a keyboard, not to fit any theory, fella.
>>
>>3085534
