LCD Thread

We get a lot of love for CRT's here. But we never discuss these wonderful, versatile, Zero-lag, RGB-capable LCD's.

I can't be the only one, who else among us uses clip-on LCD's?
>>
>>3075841
actually most people use lcds to play retro games.
but you it's like with a certain minority in america...
the minorities are always the first to shout angrily. so w/e just do your thing
>>
>>3075850
Like Trump supporters, we get it.
>>
This thread has literally nothing to do with video games.
Same with CRT threads.
>>
>>3075852
no, i meant africuck americans. lol you black or why so bitter? lmao

LCD threads are cancer. Which is a same.

Being how much like /v/ this place has been lately it won’t go well.

Sure that asshole that says a strobe adds at least a frame of lag will show up soon.

I had that attachment for a PSone. It was even uglier than a CRT and that's saying something.

You do realize it was mostly upper middle class white kids who had the N64 right?

No, you're actually the only one on the board who owns one.

Theoretically you can use software BFI + frame delay to get better latency than the original hardware. Still not exactly zero latency LCD, but the end result is the same.

You can use savestates + slowndown button to get infinite perfect reflexes with zero latency.

I could never fathom why anyone would ever buy one of these things. The mind boggles.

Haven't seen many posts here have you?

People take google and wiki as 100% factual and all information starts and stops there. Parroting anything and everything.

I'm a displayfag I have some real primo CRTs and projectors but I don't ignore LCDs either. I think they look pretty neat when they have the same native resolution as you're displaying on them. Like a bigass Game Boy.
>>
>>3076421
Its actually pretty good. Its small with a narrow view angle though so don't expect good 2 player. The aftermarket screens were bad.
>>
>>3076326
Back before it was common to have televisions in every room, these things were a necessity.
Especially if your parents were couch potatoes either always watching sports or HGTV in the living room, which at the time had the only tv in the house.
>>
>>3075841
Most people here use large non clip on LCDs with shitty scalers. Same thing, rite?

The psone screen was great for it's time. Even not totally shit by todays standards. I have a few and some third party ones and some for other consoles. They're not great but the portability is. Especially with modern batteries. Wii and PS2 slim also make decent portable machines that can run a lot of retro stuff plus native.
>>
>>3076530
You're talking about the late 90s not the early 80s. Kids had their own TVs. Snap on screens were for road trips. That's also why the PSOne ran of DC directly.
>>
>>3076268
Higher refresh rate = shorter frame transfer time = lower average latency. BFI lets you have higher refresh rate without harming motion as frame doubling would.
>>
>>3076613
Why do you keep mentioning bfi? It's trash.
>>
>>3076617
With the brightness adjusted to be equal, 60Hz vs 120Hz BFI on a CRT has identical motion quality and image quality. But the BFI version will have lower average latency. If you have sufficient brightness that you can afford to lose some then there is no reason not to use it.

On an LCD it's not 100% perfect, but it still gives you far better motion quality than the sample-and-hold most people use, and still gives you the latency benefit.
>>
>>3076654
Are you fucking retarded? Please do us all a favor and just stop posting. You're just parroting shit straight from google.

-BFI is adding more frames. You can't get worse latency.
-It has terrible compatibility and is usually meant for lightboost monitors.
-it only works for 60hz source with a 120hz monitor. Any dips or games that don't run at 60fps wont work.
-it does nothing to help with pixel persistence. Another reason it has more latency.

You are the reason this place has been going to shit.
>>
>>3075947

Why don't we just elect Kim Kardashian for president? Why not Gary coleman, or Ronald McDonald, or snooki from the jersey shore? I mean, they all speak their minds and that's the only requirement to become the president these days.
>>
>>3076679
>-BFI is adding more frames. You can't get worse latency.
It has *better* latency (on average, it's identical for the first line), because the frame transfers twice as fast.

>It has terrible compatibility
Why would I care? 99% of LCDs are sample-and-hold garbage.

>Any dips or games that don't run at 60fps wont work.
If the game drops frames it will look the same as the original hardware. If the emulator drops frames, your hardware sucks or you have it configured wrong.

>it does nothing to help with pixel persistence
It approximately halves pixel persistence, even without backlight strobing. With backlight strobing it's even better. And backlight strobing adds average latency, but this is exactly counteracted by the BFI latency improvement, so with a fast enough LCD you can come extremely close to CRT latency with motion quality that's actually better than CRT.
>>
>>3076698

You're the magical thinking retard. There is no source for basic facts about how reality operates. Cause and effect is an axiom. Nothing makes any fucking sense without it. If your time traveling monitor is real then why am I living on Earth and not some Lovecraftian hell dimension? Maybe literal schizophrenic people like anon experience that, and they have to constantly shitpost on 4chan to ease their suffering.

Ah, but it doesn't change the rate the console sends video out at. And it can't predict what the console will send. So the processing time in a buffer before the frame is blitted to the screen is still the same. It just sends the same picture twice instead of once.

Shut the fuck up if you don't know what you're talking about.

Your cause is just but using flawed and irrelevant evidence to support it doesn't do anyone any good.

Owing to a thyroid storm I've become a thyroid risk. Having a little Playstation I can keep in my "go-bag" helps a ton with the tedium of waiting days at a time for Doctors to observe changes to my medicine and shit.
>>
>>3077325
it's also why zero-lag CRTs don't exist. The signal in the cable can't travel faster than the speed of light.
>>

Myvu Solo is 320x240 but 240p is honestly more accurately represented at 640x480 with or without every other line blank to represent scan lines according to taste.
>>
>>3077757
>>3078280
useless because most 240p games are anamorphic and don't have 1:1 DAR.
>>
>>3077319
>Ah, but it doesn't change the rate the console sends video out at.
I said "software BFI", which obviously means emulation, seeing as there is no original hardware capable of this.
>>
>>3078290
Yeah, that's why I wrote the last 85% of my sentence. A 320x240 display isn't "useless" but it does lack the horizontal resolution to "accurately" display most games, though many games look "better" at 1:1
>>
>>3075885
It's related to how people experience games. Especially CRT seeing as how a lot of /vr/ machines were designed around them.

>>
>>3077325
Okay, if you want to be pedantic, no, CRT's have something like a 0.00067 MILLISECOND (670 nanosecond) delay. Since the speed of, say, a light gun is also tied by the speed of light, it is not significant enough to cause any problems. A 1 millisecond 'low lag' LCD is about 1,492 times as slow as the average CRT.
