Pretty much just playing Dodonpachi. I can get to the third level without dying and generally using 1 bomb at most, but then I get there and die a bunch before the boss. Really bad about hoarding bombs even though it feels like the game gives you a lot.

How about a change of atmosphere? Try playing Donpachi US Version, try bomb spamming and you'll see what I mean. ;)bombing is utterly broken in that game

I think Dodonpachi is a good starting point as long as you ignore scoring shenanigans - the bees, stars, hit chains. The ending is pretty shitty though.

Yeah, right now I'm just playing to try to get decent at learning the ropes, like when to bomb and just trying to clear it to begin with. I'm not a super competitive guy so I'll probably never bother with trying for high scores, though I've heard that's half the fun of the genre.

Make sure you experiment with savestates though, place one before each stage so you have a practice mode. Place one before each boss, and before each phase when their parts blow up and they change patterns. Experiment with spamming saves, it can be fun, just make sure you make serious attempts from time to time.
You know how achievements work, they give them away for beating levels or bosses in one credit, before giving you an achievement for beating everything? That's how you should think, work towards smaller manageable goals like that before trying a big 1cc.
