Why did the PS1 menu have all fucked up, distorted looking colors? For years, I thought there was a problem with my console. I mean, does this look nice to anyone?
It looks like the early 90s
Yeah it was kind of not too slick-looking.
The Saturn's bios/CD player was much superior.
hijacking a little bit.
Once when I was a kid I was playing PS1 but didn't put the disc onto the spindle all the way or something. I got a completely solid blue screen with "MEMORY CAR" written on it in big letters, like the font that your TV has. Took the disc out and put it back in and it was gone. Anyone see this screen before?

This. It was 1994 and rainbow gradients were still the pinnacle of graphics in middle school computer labs across the country.
>>3072513
They got their shit together with PSone
>>3072564

>For years, I thought there was a problem with my console.
You must have a really low IQ.
>>3072576
Did he imply that he watches e-celebs?
>>3072523
>dat rocket ship
>>3072575
Awwwwww yeah son! That's the good shit!
>>3072575
mmmm excellent taste
>>3072567
PAL PS1 consoles have had this bios from the very beginning
PSone got the PAL bios
>>3072513
>>3072513
90s was all about wacky rad tubular colors. I miss those times. Fuck Apple for making everything sterile.
>>3072714
"All these colors are just SO garish and kiddy. We need to make things sleeker and more professional-cool!" Flash forward a few years and "Man, why does all this stuff look so boring? We need more colors!" It is the cycle of the general public's mind: overexposure of something leads to contempt, that contempt leads to change, and subsequent overexposure of the new thing or style leads to admiration of and a return to the previously abandoned thing. The hotness of pixel art and NES games suddenly changing from old, outdated fleamarket junk into LOOK RARE RETRO WOW!! is evidence of this.
>>3072710
but psx games were black
>>3072765
PS1
I love this screen. It gives me a wave of early 90's nostalgia every time I need to erase a save file.
It looks like they weren't taking things too seriously, like it was just a fun toy. Sony hadn't really developed the sleek graphical style of the Playstation brand yet.
>>3072605
I live in PAL land and I had OP's BIOS
>>3072741
I could never get overexposed to color. Also dolphins.
>>3072513
>Why did the PS1 menu have all fucked up, distorted looking colors?
They're called rainbow gradients, and they were the shit in the mid-90s because actually having enough color depth to blend a gradient smoothly was mind-blowing.
>>3072953
Some models did, but not the earlier ones. Nor PSone.
Mine PAL has this.
>>3072513
It was the 90s bitch.
The look was so Crash Bandicooty.
>>3073105
same here, french anon here, got my Playstation first week of release (1995 October 6th)
Also all my friends had the same bios
>>3072575
>>3073116
got a good lol, thanks anon
>>3072513
Sony just had some godly taste in games.
>>3072513
Watch The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, then it will make sense.
>>3072527
Apparently data it misreads from the CD can fuck up what bios is trying to play/display. You might want to look at the Fearful Harmony bug.
>>3073105
What the fuck is that?!
>>3072513
Because MULTIKULTURE!
>>3073040
Please don't post any more aesthetics, you'll attract /mu/.
>>3072953
I had the launch model psx here in pal land, it was deffo the grey one
>>3072513
I do think it's cool that the gradients change each time you turn on the system, but that's about it.
>>3072513
Copy all button look like Turkey.
>>3072513
because its rad
>>3072513
>implying that's bad
Go back to your games with wowsofuturistic grey transparent rectangle UI that looks straight out of an android faggot.
>>3072843
>autism
>>3075462
what are you even talking about?
>>3072513
It's a 90s thing you would've had to be there to understand.
Everyone's talking about the US or EU, but what did the JP BIOS look like?
Was it the same as EU?
>>3072513
everyone was still experiencing the after-effects of the cocaine cloud that apparently engulfed the earth's atmosphere in the 80s
>>3075861
Yes, although I recall it having a green pastel pencil in place of the purple arrow thing.
>>3075880
what, really?
I thought the rad colors was a thing in american culture, feels very out of place in japan.
>>3075893
80% of the EU PS1s also had this BIOS so I see no reason not to think it shouldn't be the official worldwide BIOS.
>>3075895
to be exact
euro SCPH-7xxx and SCPH-9xxx have the colorful bios
euro SCPH-1xxx, SCPH-5xxx and PSOne have the grey bios
>>3075904
Kinda makes sense since they started compressing gfx/audio from SCPH-7xxx to make space for the fancy red book effects, and I suppose they didn't have time to apply that kind of compression to the grey BIOS within time.
>>3072513
Looks pretty rad to me OP
>>3073296
The original simple looking PAL PSX Bios.
After that they turned it kiddy cause a new generation of bebbies were entering the console market.
>>3072584
i always wanted it to be a mini-game
they really should've made it a simple fucking bios mini-game
>>3075738
I was there and I don't get it either. I remember the 80's being more colorful. Goddamm hot pink, black and neons everywhere... The 90's had more of a depressive vibe than anything.
Maybe I was just old enough to taste the shit in the sammich by then.
Never thought my PS was broken, it just seemed out of place to have a menu like that.
>>3072513
It's no mystery that 90's graphic design is abolutely terrible.
PS1 graphics blew my mind. Before that i had played Prince of Persia on DOS, Black & White Pacman, and Amiga games. I had never seen 3D before. Playing Kula World and Medievil demos sent my 12 year old brain into Nirvana.
>>3079868
>The 90's had more of a depressive vibe than anything.
Nigga i'm not sure if you lived in the 90's. The music was insane and over the top.
>>3073105
that's how mine was
>>3082636
He's thinking of grunge which was omnipresent during the 90s and certainly the opposite of insane and over the top but aesthetically even grunge was quite colorful.
>>3079868
Pop aesthetics of the early 90s were extremely colorful just look at Bill Cosby's sweaters or and McDonald's happy meal box from the time. Goths didn't really have a strong effect on pop aesthetics until much much later than the Playstation's launch.
>>3079868
>The 90's had more of a depressive vibe than anything.
90-94 was shitty eurobeat dance music. 95-99 was BackSync Spice Club 7.
Grunge was essentially second-place all throughout.
>>3082709
Goths are an 80s thing.
The 90s "goth" is stuff like NIN and Marilyn Manson that I don't think actually counts as real goth, more like mallgoth.
