>Batman
Slow and clunky controls. Any platformer that has delay frames when you jump is automatically garbage.
>Duck Tales
The pogo stick is inconsistent and buggy at times. Platformers are all about tight and responsive controls. Also, instant enemy respawn is dumb game design in a game like this.
>Ninja Gaiden
Mediocre gameplay that is embellished with style and good music.
>Mario 2
Decent. But oh so boring.
>Kirby
Slowdown ridden mediocrity that is slow and too easy.
>Shatterhand
More style than substance.
>Chip 'n Dale
Absolutely nothing special. Plain as can be.
>Little Nemo
Atrocious hit detection.
>Vice: Project Doom
Too much health = dumb game design.
>Little Samson
Just plain boring.
>Adventure Island
Play the original arcade version.
>Bugs Bunny games
Slow and atrocious.
>Darkwing Duck
Clunky.
>Mr. Gimmick
This one is good actually.
>Mega Man
Most overrated series in the history of video games. The definition and epitome of mediocrity.
Okay.
>>3071830
Kirby Superstar and Dreamland 3 are the only good ones on SNES
entire console library is mostly platformers.
>>3071830
duck tales is just nintendo hard, not bad.
plus mario 1 can run backwards through walls. don't give me all these nes games had bugs and ignore that.
*farts*

Mario 2 > Mario 1 > Mario 3 > Mario 4
>>3071862
>Mario 4
Nigga what?
>>3071830
>Ninja Gaiden
Best pacing of any platform game there is. The only flaw is the overpowered spinning jump-slash powerup.
>>3071830
>no castlevania
At least shitpost properly.
>>3071867
In japan super mario world is known as super mario 4.
>>3071871

>Kirby's Adventure

I agree ON
However Zelda 2 and Contra are awesome, they're sidescrollers and not strictly platformers.
What kind of ridiculous, subjective criticism do you have for the Adventure Island series, OP?
>Panic Restaurant gets completely ignored
>>3071908
>>3071830
Truth. I still have this cart and it's great.
Also, what's with OP's hatred of Nemo? Game still has more original gameplay mechanics than most of the shit they keep churning out these days and I never had issues with the hitboxes.
Megaman is over-rated as a series, but there are still some very good ones; most of which are on the NES.
For OP, I'd recommend he try two other platformers that ate my life and I have no regrets about.
Big Nose the Caveman. It's by Codemasters, so it's far from shiny, yet less buggy than a Bethesda title, but its got serious replay value.
MC Kids. It's a McDonalds game that was pretty fucking awesome. Think Mario2, if it was 2 player, you could flip gravity at times and there was a LOT more variety in levels.
Want a harder platformer that was still solid? Wizards and Warriors II: Iron Sword. I had this growing up and it is hard as fuck. I never got past the fire level. The difficulty of this game causes most people to quit during the first level. As a lil kid, I got to the 5th.
>>3071830
here's your >(you)
now fuck off you cuck
>>3071830
Yume penguin monogatari would beg to differ... Also kid dracula and hebereke were good.
>>3071908
True point... Also i mean do we really need to have this arguement, like what you like for god sake...
>Rush'n'Attack
Maybe it was mediocre, but it was one of the few games my neighbor's kid had.
>Ghosts'n'Ghoblins
Too hard for a bunch of little kids. Seemed pretty shitty though.
>>3071837
Wrong. Kirby games on SNES are mediocre drivel that is popular due to gimmicks and charming graphics.
>>3071851
Implying difficulty is the matter with Duck Tales. No. It's bad game design and inconsistent mechanics and controls.
>>3071869
So? The gameplay is still mediocre.
>>3071871
>Castlevania
Clunky average mess that people like because of the setting and atmosphere.
>>3071894
Hurr use the fireball and ignore 90% of the game. That's called bad game design, Obama.
>>3071907
>Zelda 2
That's an adventure/RPG hybrid.
>Contra
That's called a run'n'gun. Not a platformer.
>>3071908
Read my original post for my thoughts on Adventure Island.
>>3071982
It deserves to be ignored for being an uninspired mediocre pile of blandness.
>>3072125
>Nemo
Controls and mechanics can make or break a platformer no matter how many nice ideas and gimmicks it may have.
>Big Nose and MC Kids and Wizards & Warriors
You've gotta be kidding me.
>>3072149
Vulgar.
>>3072208
>Penguin
Mediocre and uninspired. Only liked because of cutesie shit.
>Kid Dracula
Slow and plodding and mediocre.
>>3072260
>Rush'n'Attack
Mediocre.
>Ghosts'n'Goblins
Shitty port that wasn't even done by Capcom.
>>3072290
The fuck are you talking about it may have penguins but i mean the mechanics were interesting.
>>3072290
I like how anything that bothers to have pacing is "too slow". I'll bet you think genesis is also great solely because of blast processing.
>>3071851
When did ducktaled become hard?
It's a pretty good introduction to platformers and the learning curve is pretty solid.
>>3072290
>Read my original post for my thoughts on Adventure Island.
So, play the original arcade versions of Adventure Island II, III and IV?
Uh huh...
based op dropping some #truthbombs in here
y'all blinded by nostalgia
>>3071830
I'm curious, how would you rank the 3 good platformers (Mario 1, 3 and Gimmick)?
>>3072390
hey OP, you new on /vr/?
saying SMB1 and 3 are great games ain't gonna trigger people here.
You say stuff like e-celebs or console wars, and that's a lot more effective. All this thread got is 30 replies of people discussing platformers.
Try the e-celeb or consolewar bait, you'll have over 100 replies within a few hours and lots of insults and namecalling.
>>3072397
Fuck this guy, I bet he thinks GBA is retro.
>>3072457
No, OP is honestly just baiting, at least I hope so.
>>3072457
What? No, I don't think that. In fact I barely see 5th gen as retro, even.

>>3072290
>Castlevania
>Clunky average mess that people like because of the setting and atmosphere.
Not sure how you didn't notice this, but castlevania is an action/puzzle game not a platformer.
>>3072585
Puzzle?
>>3072586
Pretty much.
Every enemy has a pattern of behavior that you have to learn to counter. The level layout influences enemy behavior as well, requiring you to adapt strategies on the fly.
>>3072579
>>3072709
>that second person who actually played it
>the other three who obviously didn't
Butt hurt over Mega Man or something? Don't worry it's dead.
Don't be mad just because you just bought a nes and realized that retro games are hard and you suck
Who the fuck thinks that Ducktales is hard?
>>3072871
Someone that doesn't know how to play it
>>3072290
Literally and completely legitimately not fucking with you. Nemo was a solid game and MC Kids puts a ton of Mario's bullshit to shame, endorsements aside. W&W2, hard to swallow, but still good. If you can't swallow a shot, don't blame the drink. It's not kind, but it's still good for those with the pallet.
Your moms the best platformer on my dick lol fag
just came in here to say that gimmick is very good (and challenging). if you're going to play it, make sure to play the japanese version Gimmick! the mr. gimmick port is inferior, the soundtrack especially being a shadow of the original.
other than that, really cool opinions OP. they're fascinating, post some more.
>>3072721
Exactly
The first 3 Mega Men on the NES were very good, the rest were rehashes and added nothing special.
>>3072290
>Hurr use the fireball and ignore 90% of the game. That's called bad game design, Obama.
You're fucking retarded lmao. Do you even understand what the dash mechanic is? Have you ever utilized slide kick and slope momentum to go even faster than dash with precise consecutive jumps to maintain it? Kirby's Adventure has more depth in movement mechanics than either of the Mario games you listed, and that's not even considering the existence of powers.
Speaking of powers, fireball isn't the fastest moving power, but if for some reason you're stupid enough to think it is, you can try to fireball through the whole game. Let me know if you can even make it through one stage without getting hit (assuming you don't have a pre-planned route.) Pretty easy, huh?
Stop pretending to understand a game you clearly know fuck all about.
>>3073246
that last part could be said about every other game he claims is shit.
Question for OP: When you judge these games is it by todays standards or from the perspective of the days when it was released? Just curious.
>>3071830
>he didn't think Tiny Toons was good
THE FUCKING FUCK?
>>3073257
Yeah, pretty sure this is a bait thread, but I still have to clear up his lies for potential newcomers.
So is just /vr/ just /v/ now?
>>3071830
Battletoads is best.
>>3071830
Pretty assholish and inflammatory way of getting your point across, but I agree with most of your points, although a couple are way off. NES has tons of mediocre platforming games because that was the trend back then, just like SNES has tons of mediocre RPGs, neo-geo has tons of mediocre fighting games, tg16 has tons of mediocre shmups, etc. They were just the specific trends on the systems.
>>3073246
Just ignore him, controls in Kirby's adventure are phenomenal I have no idea who would use fireball for movement.
>>3071830
Your move, OP.
>>3072290
>Hurr use the fireball and ignore 90% of the game. That's called bad game design, Obama.
this wouldn't work in kirby's adventure. pretty sure you're thinking about Kirby 64.
