And I'd say even then, they're very different games. Mario and Luigi (and I guess Super Mario RPG) put a lot of focus on transplanting platforming mechanics into an RPG combat and traversal, Paper Mario focuses mostly on humorous writing, while Pokemon is focusing mostly on tactical combat with some potential for player expression by assembling your own team (and some degree of roleplay like Nuzlocke Challenge and so on). They are pretty much as different as jRPGs can get.
