Simon's Quest is underrated.
>>
>>3068162
I found it to be better than 1-3 tbqh m8.

it's a bit like haunted castle. unique assets show up in your path every 5 steps. it really feels like you're fighting your way up a castle, even if the gameplay is a bit bunk (lets be honest, it's not very good in any castlevania.)

castlevania was always cool because the gameplay was kind of shitty, but it makes you feel like you're literally fighting tooth and nail up a castle. the uniqueness of environments and assets is as important as gameplay in this.

dark souls is the best castlevania

>>
>>3068552

>>
>>3068516
not even close. symphony still retained features of actual level design, such as environmental variety, e.g. stage hazards, long stair cases, verticality in levels, richter mode made it play a little like a classic.

ALL of the gba games and DS games were just gridded boxy rooms filled with trash mobs and a variety of weapons that allowed you to attack from a safe distance, so boss strategy was easier. circle of the moon kind of preserved level variety and platforming, but only barely.

I honestly can't think of anything remotely resembling such a huge drop in quality.

SOTN still reigns supreme.
>>
>>3068420
There's nothing "shitty" about how Castlevania plays.
>>
It's amazing how much of a leap this game is over 64 with the simple advent of camera control.

I also can see why people hate e-celebs alot and i'm begining to see it too since I recently watched jontron's old review of LoD and good god it was cringeworthy

>Hurr the camera sux!
>Blatantly set to battle mode which is for combat yet is platforming
Later on though I see him rotating the fucking camera. Like what? and he never acknowledges this.

Then he complains about the jumping yet he blatantly jumps like an hour fucking early and falls into the hole.

>Gee maybe the problem is i'm jumping way too fucking early? Nahhhh it's just the game.

So anyway to make up for the shitpost who is your favorite character in LoD to play as?

Well, it's not like the original was any good, but at least the cast was right for the job. I like that it makes naughty Academy Award winner and all round smug cunt Susan Sarandon forever ashamed that 'despite having won five Emmies, an Academy Award and four nominations, [she'll] only ever really be remembered for Rocky Horror.'
I saw an interview with her years ago where she said that in the most contemptuous way possible as she rolled her eyes in disgust at the very idea. She might be a do-gooder who does actual good, but doing good is not a license to be smug about it.

Game is shit. Mandragora /Nitro.
AVGN wouldn't lie
>>
>>3071110
Cept for the fact that he did.

Whether you get the mandragora OR the nitro first the entire problem he had, stemmed from the fact he never figured out you needed to interact with the crack in the wall itself and not the items in his inventory menu.

Plus the fact that he talks like he's some kind of pro but in reality sucks dick at games should've been your first tip off he isn't always honest.

nice gimmick game you like there, australia, I sure love mashing the whip mindlessly while I'm riding a raft
>>
>>3071653
I'd rather ride a raft than hang from my whip as I wait for a room to rotate for 30 minutes.

Also, that's obviously a reference to the cave level in CV1 where you had to wait on a platform that looks like a raft and duck under stalactites, you pleb.
>>
>>3071654
>for 30 minutes.

It's actually more like 30 seconds, but I love how you went from 5 minutes, to 30 minutes. Next time you'll probably say you have to wait 50 hours. Your hateboner for IV is making you look desperate, aussie.
Chronicles also has that disney land level, where is that on the original Castlevania?

Also, it's not a reference to anything, in CV1 you don't have to "wait", you have to carefully time your jumps or else you die. In X68K you just stay there and mash the whip as the merman mindlessly jump before you so that you whip them. At least on the rotating room you have to keep a certain timing for the medusa heads.

Just in case, I still like X68K, it's a great game, I just like making fun of australia and pointing out his cherry picks can also be counter-cherry picked.

Only on /vr/ would you find people that prefer level design that makes you wait like in IV (rotating room, area where the floor rises vertically, etc.) to some "autoscrolling" like riding a raft, rofl.
>>

Play beyond the first loop, scrub. The merman spawns get harder to dodge.

That happens in Castlevania III though.
>>
>>3072970
>makes you wait like in IV (rotating room, area where the floor rises vertically

You mean that part of stage B where you need to clibm up staris that fall and a chainsaw comes from the bottom? If you wait there, you're dead.

Kind of agree about the rotating room, but the first time you play the game that's really cool. Otherwise it's just a short intermission on an otherwise long and great level.
>>
>>3072985
Not the same exactly. In III it's harder and you can die instantly if you take too long.

I'm starting to wonder if the IV fanboys have even beaten any other Castlevania.
>>
>>3072762
It's great.
>>
>>3073017

It's the opposite, in III you have more time as the screen isn't actually scrolling continually.
On IV, there's a chainsaw below so you can't wait.

I'm starting to wonder if the IV haters have even played the game.

Castlevania is probably my favourite retro series, But a couple things always bugged me.
1) You're a vampire killer... yet you hardly ever kill vampires.

>>3074519

That's one of the good things the N64 games have going on, they actually have regular vampire enemies, and you can even get vampirized yourself if you get biten.

As for your second question, basically all the talent at Konami already left years ago, the exodus started with Treasure in the early 90s (as well as many others that just left the industry altogether), continued with the Goemon Team in the mid 00s, and then the final nail in the coffin was Kojima leaving last year. (Kojima is to blame for Lords of Shadow, though).
I don't think Konami is going to make anything but pachinko from now on.
>>
>>3074531
The Parodius/Twinbee team is still there, right?
>>
>>3074526

Other than the "Massive slowdowns" on that one section with mode 7 backgrounds that lasts for about 30 seconds and makes up for 0,005% of the whole game, I don't see what's the problem with IV.
Bloodlines is on the Genesis, but it's not a SUPER GOTTA GO FAST GAME, Castlevania games never were like that, they're slow, methodic games.

Anyway, to hell with your console war bullshit, both SNES and Genesis were great systems, each with their own limitations, but great devs delivered some great titles nontheless. Shitposters like you shouldn't be allowed to discuss a series as great as like Castlevania.

Grant. His movement options are awesome - OP in a really fun way. (Sypha and Alucard are kind of game-breakers in some spots too, but they aren't all that interesting for the most part - Sypha just lets you skip bosses and Alucard saves you from pits or some pain-in-the-ass segments. Still like Sypha though.)

US Grant is the best one. JP Grant is kind of boring with his knife sniper schtick.

Also the upper route is kind of the only good one. The last level before Dracula's castle on the lower one is lame - most of it is okay, but then you get to that falling blocks level and ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

This Tbh I never got all the hate for this game.

Castlevania 64 sure but LoD fixes ALOT of it's problems, sure at the cost of voice acting but it's a small price to pay for the game actually being fun to play.

You wouldn't believe how being able to control the fucking camera changes things. Plus the battle view lock-on is improved as well.

Maybe i'm the weirdo here but i've NEVER had many problems with it. Granted i'm emulating so I just mapped the controls to be comfortable to me...

There were a couple of tricky spots in CV64 with the camera (a lot of Duel Towers and that one brick block in the middle of the water towards the end of Underground Waterway) but it's not like it was this totally constant thing. we probably won't see anything else, huh? konami even axed metal gear solid. castlevania is effectively dead, right?

>>3075679
the design just wasn't great. very few parts of the game have much tension, its piss easy, the music sucks, and the tradeoff in atmosphere is minimal due to their weak art direction, the controls aren't very tight, etc. etc. etc.

I still liked it, but it just wasn't grade a stuff.

>In X68K you just stay there and mash the whip as the merman mindlessly jump before you so that you whip them.
I replayed it and that's a lie, sometimes the mermen will swim under you and can touch you through it that sends you flying off the raft. Also you have to do platforming during that section to get onto a second raft. There is more involved than what you're leading on. Either you didn't play it, or you're omitting facts to make Super look better than the 68000 game.

>At least on the rotating room you have to keep a certain timing for the medusa heads.
No, you can literally stand in one spot and none of the medusas will ever hit you.

Please get over your blind nostalgia for Super Castlevania Bros., it's petty and childish.

Castlevania may not be the hardest, and even though I'm a fan of AVGN, I don't think he's that good at video games
>>
>>3074519
Konami is dropped the series, so I wouldn't expect any more castlevania games from them

hacked PC Harmony of Despair when?

>sometimes the mermen will swim under you and can touch you

Yeah, sometimes, their patterns are completely random. Most of the time they will just jump to the side, you can just stand there, duck, and whip. The only reason to occasionally move from right to left is when the raft itself moves. The platforming in that section is nil, most of that section is waiting on the raft. Also the skeleton dragon boss is the worst boss in the game, you just stand there, jump and whip, nothing else.

I actually like both IV and X68K a lot, but neither are my favorites. I just like to fuck with you, Australia, your hateboner for IV is amusing.

But wait, Bloodlines is more of a Mario game than IV is.

Mario games have auto side-scrolling levels, which Bloodlines has. IV doesn't.

I know you've said before that you think IV controls like a Mario game, but I just don't see it. It doesn't have a dedicated run button like Mario, you can't change speed when playing. In that sense, you could argue Symphony of the Night is more of a Mario game since you can actually change speed playing with Richter (or with Alucard if you use the wolf shape).
I remember you say in IV you can change direction mid-air, but the same happens in Rondo of Blood (in Rondo it's even more easy to change direction and also can jump longer while changing direction, breaking the CV1 formula even more).

So I dunno, I don't see how IV is the only Castlevania Bros. I think every Castlevania has a bit of Mario in them!

by the way nice MS paint skills you got there Australia, lol
>>
>>3080341
The bridge part in IV where you're chased by bats is pretty much an autoscroller section.
>>
Why the hate on Castlevania IV? Sure it is an easy game but the first time I sat down and played it, it blew my fucking mind. The levels were great and the music was memorable. The use of mode 7 was utilized correctly. It is a comfortable game to sit down and play. Everybody that says the game sucks have played and beat it at least once and at one point in time it was the crowned jewel of the series.
>>
>>3080990
Because it was the most casual Castlevania game (before SotN would take that crown years later).

Gamesack said Rondo of Blood is the most perfect Castlevania game. Do you agree with them, /vr/?

Alright /vr/, let's settle this once and for all.

Choose your favorite game.

Rondo also has one like that, doesn't count, Bloodlines has actual auto-scrolling sections.

>>3081002
Rondo and Bloodlines are as easy (if not more) than IV. Especially Rondo.

>>3080990
It's just one guy who has a raging hateboner for it, we call him Australia-kun, cause he pronounces Sega as "See-guh". He's also like 60 years old.

>>3081179
I seem to remember Game Sack said IV was the best 16-bit game, it was on number 1 on their 16-bit games list.

Here's where it's said.
>>
>>3081228
Rondo has difficult bosses and "Bloodlines" (what is that? some edgy variant of New Generation?) has unique level design that can throw you off if you aren't careful, besides when people call Super casual they are referring to the overpowered multi-whip, mindless bosses, easy platforming, dull music, and extremely slow pacing.
>>
>>3081316
>"Bloodlines" (what is that? some edgy variant of New Generation?)

Your jokes get old (just like yourself) fast, aussie.
Bloodlines doesn't have "unique" level design, it has auto-scrolling sections that don't belong on Castlevania games. Also OP orb sub-weapon that kills everything on screen. The game is really easy.

>>3081241

I remember they also said IV was the best of the 16-bit games (in general, not just Castlevania), even Joe (who is a big Sega fan and kinda biased against the SNES) said IV is the best. I don't really agree, I like Dracula X or Rondo better myself, but IV is pretty cool too.

So you mean to tell me you guys did not enjoy Castlevania IV? I feel sorry for you guys if that is the case because I can keep playing that fucking game until the day I die.
>>
>>3081425
I enjoyed even Haunted Castle more than Super Castlevania Bros.
>>
>>3081442
>Super Castlevania Bros

I'm nominating this for Meme of The Year srsly.
>>
>>3081442
How so? While Super ain't perfect, it keep itself consistently good from beginning to end, even SoTN got kind of lame through the inverted castle.
>>
>>3081316

What is this australian faggots problem?

Like I think he has legitimate autism or like mental problems.

Seek help and fuck off. Get some meds or a therapist or something.
>>
>>3081754
It isn't good. It's boring and easy. Go back to making shit movies, James, you shitload of fuck.
>>
Streaming Super Castlevania IV just for Australia-kun :^]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXWNWE9QWbs
>>
>>3081839

Then don't play Bloodlines (and that's New Generation for you, you got the censored 50hz version) or Rondo either because they're even more boring and more easy, Australia-kun.
>>
>>3081941
They're not easier, actually, they are far more complex, have better stage design, better music, and better control.
>>
>>3081947

Saying "better" or "more complex" don't really give your opinions any validation, australia. You're just a sad old baby boomer who is bored at life and shitpost on a taiwanese cartoon image board for 20-something kids all day and all night, you really should seek help.

Did anyone else wonder how a Texan got a hold of the Vampire Killer and why he's in Europe?
>>
>>3082192
It's a video game. It isn't real.
>>
>>3082196
I know that. But even a videogame story should try to make sense.

At least Spearguy is from Europe though.
>>
>>3082207
Why? The story is just tacked on at the end and you don't even have to read it. The gameplay is all that matters.
