Dose this game have any issues when sped up on a PS2? The PS1 load times are horrendous.

What are some recommended racing games for PS1? All I have at the moment is R4, but I was thinking about picking up Gran Turismo.
I've also played Vanishing Point, but couldn't get into it.

TOCA series (nowadays known as GRID) started on ps1. They were famous for having insane amount of vehicles on the track at once, plus different weather options. TOCA1 is touring cars only, while second game added bunch of different classes. Pretty insane given the system it came out on. I think they were also out for PC too.
CMR 2.0 for rally stuff.
Gran Turismo 1 has better atmosphere and si relatively short so best to pick it up before going to 2.

Anyone here play Dirt Devils? My bowling alley has it. Fun Sega off-road game, and there's a scoring system where smashing up the other cars earns money/points, which is recorded along with your best time.

I always thought people were exagerating about F1, F1 CE and '97 but they are good as people say, specially with a negcon. Newman Haas game on PS1 is also neat, it's also from Psygnosis.

How does /vr/ feel about Ridge Racer 2? It has no new content at all over the first game, but it's still a better game, with new AI and a better day-night cycle.

I feel like Gran Turismo has aged really badly. Those graphics that blew me away back in the day look like ass now; and the GT mode is actually just a complete and utter grindfest, but with racing instead of beating up mythical creatures.
I feel like the racing genre peaked on PS2/Xbox, but it's gone downhill again in the recent years where it has all this racing line, auto-steer and auto-brake casual bullshit.
Colin McRae Rally was the god tier of driving a four wheeled box really fast.

Gran Turismo was never an eye opener until Gran Turismo 3. Ridge Racer Type 4 had graphically superior tracks and EA went balls out for car models especially in the showroom. Gran Turismo had decent car chrome, the novelty of race modification, roster, very memorable "super" cars, and that's about it in terms of cars. Gran Turismo did however always have the best and most iconic track layouts ever.

Grip <-> Drift slider and buying/upgrading cars over unlocking by replaying GP over and over again were the main reasons why I had to put down Type 4 even though I love it.

That's mainly a hardware issue. The arcade system runs at a consistent 60fps, while the DC and N64 can't manage that, though the DC is much better than the N64 in that respect.

In what fucking way? Because it makes it easier to line up jumps? The wings make the stunt mode (which isn't in the arcade version) one of the best modes in any driving game.
Plus, it also has the battle mode (which also isn't in the arcade version) that is seriously more enjoyable than most dedicated car combat games.
The console game just has way more depth and replay value. The arcade game is something you dump a couple of quarters in to kill some time when you're at the mall.
