Never mind, I didn't realize this thread was (I assume) exclusively about the 8-bit version of Sonic 1, where Special Stages are accessed through hidden monitors instead of by collecting enough rings. Ring collecting is admittedly pretty pointless in this game, I guess.
However, I am tired of people not acknowledging the brilliance of rings as a mechanic in the 16-bit Sonic games. Many people who haven't played them before will tell you that it's pointless to collect more than 1 ring since rings count only as one extra hit point. This does not consider the fact that, to get to the special stage, you need to cross the exit (in Sonic 1, or a checkpoint post in the other games) with at least 50 rings. It's a brilliant mechanic because it requires you to do a flawless run of the level. Touch a single enemy and you lose *all* your rings, and have to start over, since you are unlikely to accumulate 50 rings unless you start from the beginning.

Special stages in SMS Sonic 1 do require rings, at least 50 when you get to the end of the stage. The chaos emeralds are hidden in the normal stages. You gave no idea what you're talking about.
