just started playing Betrayal at Krondor!
Any hints?

The graphics in that game are pretty awful especially considering how nice contemporary Sierra titles like KQ6 looked.
>>
POR must have been a popular game because Ebay has tons of copies.
>>

Don't do it, man. Just boot up DOSBox and get it from an abandonware site.

What would be a good title to start on?
I've played Phantasie on the C64 some time ago
>>
Ultima IV-VII ofc (the first three are probably too primitive for most modern gamers)
>>
Does Wizardry for my NES count?
>>
>>3065209
I started playing this recently but I am having real trouble.
I think its just past the tipping point of how retro something can be before I can't tolerate it. The interface is a serious struggle.
>>
>>3068531
Pre-1993 CRPGs are definitely quite balky compared to anything made since then. POR is far from the worst though. Wizardry is a true torture test.
>>
>>3068303
Isn't the NES version much different than the real version? Heard the dungeon layout is smaller. Personally if you are going to play the first 3 Wizardry I would recommend the SNES version since it plays just like the original just with better UI. Think the only major difference between the Apple 2 and SNES is that the SNES auto maps for you but to get to it you need to cast the map spell.

Japan really doesn't fuck around with their Wizardry games. Even the newest one that they made plays just as insane as the others.
>>
Japanese-developed RPGs have never left the 80s. They're still relying on game design conventions found in Ultima IV while Western RPGs began evolving away from that during the 90s.
>>
>>3068573
Ultima IV it's probably more advanced than the regular western RPG of the last 15 years.
>>
>>3068302
The primitivity is part of the charm for Ultima 1.
You can travel around the world, delve deep into a dungeon, become a space ace, defeat the evil wizard and be home before supper.

I hated this shit. It was always a disappointment.
>>
>>3068627

Ultima 1 is genuinely entertaining, but that's partially due to the first one getting remade. Ultima II and III look like dogshit in comparison (the DOS versions, mind, which are the only versions that run on modern hardware thanks to DOSBox).
>>
>>3068753
You can get a VGA tileset for 3 and 4 and EGA tilesets for 2 and 3 so you don't have to suffer through CGA.
And patches that add music to the otherwise bleak IBM ports.
I seriously don't hope people play without those.
http://www.pixsoriginadventures.co.uk/ultima-patcher-1-61/

You can emulate any version on modern hardware.
>>
>>3068759

I'm aware that any version can be emulated, it's just that tracking some of this down is a pain.

Thanks for the tilesets link. Bookmarked for later.

However, I do have some links to great Ultima emulators I can share (you do need to get the actual games from somewhere though):

Exodus emulates Ultima 2, 3, and 5

https://sourceforge.net/projects/ultima-exodus/?source=recommended

xu4 emulates Ultima IV

http://xu4.sourceforge.net/

Nuvie emulates Ultima VI and the Worlds of Adventure spinoffs

https://sourceforge.net/projects/nuvie/?source=recommended

And Exult emulates Ultima VII and Serpent Isle

https://sourceforge.net/projects/exult/?source=recommended
>>
>>3068787
Those aren't emulators.
The Exodus package is just the common IBM patches and the others are engine remakes.
There's also Pentagram for Ultima 8 worth noting.

What version is hard to find?
I only have 2 for the FM-7 and 4 for the X1 but those are really niche.
The Towns is the technically advanced though it fixes some bugs that made 2 playable. It's unfortunately lacking the original music for 3.

Explore as much as you can before moving the main story along. There are a lot of sidequests and cool stuff you can miss out on if you move ahead too quickly.

Play the damn Amiga version on UAE. Don't bother with that CGA shit.

What many people apparently don't know is that there were two different versions of Ultima 3 for the PC88. One from 85 by Starcraft and one from 88 by Pony Canyon. You could say the second one is for the PC88Mk2 as it needs V2 mode and has sound beyond beeping.

I'm having this weird issue in Pool of Radiance right now where I'm running into a giant fight literally every two steps in the Slums. It's practically impossible to explore the area. This happen to anybody else? Bug, or feature?
>>
>>3070993
Every area except the overworld has a fixed amount of random encouters after which there will be none so just keep fighting.

Also the size of the enemy armies in the random encounters depend on the sum of your attribute scores. This is what you get for maxing all your stats instead of just taking the first attribute roll and dealing with it.
>>
>>3071002
>This is what you get for maxing all your stats instead of just taking the first attribute roll and dealing with it.

God damn it. Most of those attributes don't even do anything useful, that 18 CHA isn't doing much for my fighters. I guess I'll reroll, this is getting pretty tedious.

Linuxfag here.

I want to play the original Wizardry games.

How should I go about this? What's the best version and how should I emulate it? I'm playing Story of Llylgamyn with the Aeon Genesis Translation patch right now. There are a few eccentricities of translation in that one ("Chilchack is need Kadorto now!") but otherwise it seems alright.

What other similar mappy dungeon crawlers should I play? Etrian Oddyssey is great but doesn't quite scratch the same itch.

Go play Ultima Underworld. It's great and lives up to the cover.
>>
>>3072327
I'd recommend the C64 versions on VICE (make sure to use x128 with 1571 and REU emulation enabled!). The Apple version has a clunkier interface and the IBM version mangled the game mechanics.

Weebs might recommend the Jap computer versions, but you'll need a translated ROM.
>>
>>3072356
But that's a 90s VGA-era game. No shit it's gonna look better than Apple II stuff.
>>
>>3072370
But it hits that sweet spot in the cover art expectations to in-game experience ratio.
>>
>>3071351
I'm playing it unpatched, you're probably exactly right. Kinda scared of something breaking because of that, the game has a few bugs
>>
>>3065209

DARK SUN: SHATTERED LANDS

PLAY IT and accept no substitute
>>
>>3072371
It's aged super well, in terms of both graphics and gameplay. Which is kind of uncommon for a game from that era.

All Japanese ports of Wizardry 1-5 except the PC Engine have an option for the original English text.

Only the SFC and Windows port have a extra translation patches for descriptions that you would otherwise find in the manual.
>>
>>3070096

right after you start there's a dwarven mine nearby, there's a Brak-Nurr on the loose. The boss is very easy just cast blind on him and he'll go down without a hit

the reward is great

And yeah, explore and walk into every house, you NEED those sidequest. Try getting at least a Keshian Tapir for Locklear before you move on to Krondor
>>
>>3072327
>I want to play the original Wizardry games.
No you absolutely do not.

They are a meme.
>>
>>3074383
^This. The Wizardry games are not for mere mortals.
>>
>>3074383
Wizardry 1 was amazing for its time and can still be a worthwhile challenge.
2 and 3 are skippable since they're just extra dungeons for 1.
4 is kind of incredible.
>>
>>3072327
>Etrian Oddyssey is great but doesn't quite scratch the same itch.
Got a PSP? Elminage Original on the PSP is Wizardry in everything but name. It's a bit on the easy side but still a good unapolagetic dungeon crawler.

Get the EU version ISO, the US version (without the patch) had a fuckton of typoes and formatting issues. The patch fixes a good chunk of them but some are still afoot.
>>
>>3074403
>amazing for its time
>worthwhile challenge

I played them on the Apple II when they were new and then I got a PC and played more of them.

The original Wizardry is just terrible, if you like doodling mazes and just the grinding parts of a JRPG it's just the ticket.
>>
>>3074452
>if you like doodling mazes and just the grinding parts of a JRPG it's just the ticket.
So what's not to like about it?
>>
>>3074452
Digging your uncle's Apple II out of the loft in 2002 and playing them doesn't count as "new".
>>
>>3074467
>So what's not to like about it?
If your thing is tedium Wizardry's just the ticket.

>>3074473
I'll play the whole round so you don't have to:
Me: I'm an oldfag unlike you junior.
You: HURR DURR IT'S PATHETIC THAT YOU'RE ON 4CHAN, THIS IS AN UNDER-21 BOARD!
>>
>>3074498
Calling someone junior is the #1 sign you're actually under 20. Who are you fooling.

Here's your (You) kiddo.

Do you have anything to contribute or are you just mad that nobody suggested playing Wizardry on a CRT yet?

>>

It'd be worth it.
>>
>>3065502
I want to like that game so badly, but it's such a fucking pain to play... the overworld just feels primitive, and the graphics, my god those graphics... why did we ever try to abandon sprites?

There's just such a difference between pre-Fallout 1/ Baldur's Gate titles, and post-Fallout and Baldur's Gate games.
>>
Goddamn, I hate Millenials so much. Fuck you all.
>>
>>3068759
Man, every time I get the nerve to start in on Ultima 4, I find out more shit I need to do. It's amazing.

One day I'll do it, one day I'll have the manual printed out, and read and memorize all that lore... and I'll have a notebook to write shit down... and I'll have the graphics and music...
>>
Is fallout 2 any good?
>>
>>3074549
Better than 3 or NV or 4. Much, much better.

It has less multimedia so your CD-ROM drive and those cool computer speakers won't get as hot though.
