What are some instances where the Genesis version of a game's music was superior to the SNES version's?

Actually both are pretty good but the Genesis version is still better

It's all subjective, but I prefer the harder, sharper sound of the Genesis. Some SNES music seems kind of flat and muffled.

SNES was basically trying to pack in the functionality of an electronic keyboard and all the sampling capabilities that comes with it. It worked fairly well for what it was trying to do.
>>
>>3059626
I feel like a majority of western multiplats were better on the genesis/megadrive. It seems like the developers knew how to use its capabilities better than the SNES. Likr NBA jam T.E. has music (not the best) while the SNED one has none. All the EA games were intended for the genesis and same with a majority of akklaim titles.
>>
I feel like western games were better on the genesis. It seems like imo that developers knew the hardware on the genesis better than the snes like EA, Akklaim, and Virgin. NBA jam T.E on Genesis has music during the match while the SNES doesn't which i feel like it could of been implemented. Though Technosoft and Treasure ruled the Genesis, Square and Capcom had the SNES.

i'm relatively sure that the snes can only take samples at around 8-11kHz and just interpolates them, which is why they sound so muffled.

my family rented the genesis version of this game back in the day. we very quickly realized it was complete dogshit

but I loved the title screen music. it was composed by Follin for SNES, but I think somebody else did a shoddy job converting it to YM2612. still, for the rest of the weekend I would turn on the game, listen to the title music, then reset the genesis to hear the song again.
>>

Weren't the X-Men games completely different from each other?
At least the X-Men games I remember on Genesis were western-made I think, and the ones on SNES were made by Capcom.
At least the ones I played.

>What are some instances where the Genesis version of a game's music was superior to the SNES version's?
Maximum Carnage is not an instance of this at all. The bass is good, but the leads are too whiny, and drums are practically nonexistent. Does it sound spooky and rad? Yes, but SNES ver actually sounds like a band albeit a bit muffled. You'll probably continue to rank Genesis version as better for whatever reason, and you're free to do so but you're still wrong. I've said it before and I'll say it again but letting nostalgia influence your opinion is probably the worst way to go about things unless you can provide actual reasons.

>>3066374

While the Mega Drive outsold the SNES in nearly every region, it barely existed in Japan (4.3 million MDs sold next to 17.7 million Super Famicoms sold) so I'm guessing jap devs had little interest in developing for a console they never themselves saw in real life.

>i'm relatively sure that the snes can only take samples at around 8-11kHz and just interpolates them, which is why they sound so muffled.

It can take samples up to 32khz, but it only has extremely little sample memory, so composers have to use very, very small sampling rates to fit the music into memory. Probably less than even 8khz.

Of all the examples you could have picked, you went with the one where the SNES soundtrack is so superior it's not even funny. I'm a die-hard segafag and I grew up playing the Genesis version, but there's just no defending this one, mang.

That aside, though, pick any of the MK games, especially MK2.

It's deliciously dark, and it just oozes evil. Not sure why Furniss decided to remix The Tower theme for use on The Kombat Tomb, but whatever, it fits perfectly.

Here's the arcade original for comparison:

And here's the SNES version:

I'm not even sure where to fucking begin with this one. It's just so flaccid, muffled and anemic-sounding. Not only is it drowning in reverb, but it's like whoever slapped this garbage together couldn't even bother to pick appropriate samples.

All of the SNES MKs sound like this. Shoddy attempts to emulate the arcade original.

Sega fags gonna fag. Yes, it is all subjective, e.g. one can prefer the 2600 sound to the N64, but the SNES sound was way more advanced. Simple fact. Even this cherry picked example proves it.

Look at the hardware if you can't hear it.
>>
>>3059691
Sega sounds like it could've been done on a NES. SNES sounds like real instrumentation.

This Sega troll is silly.
>>
>>3070949
>more advanced
But FM is more advanced than PCM. With PCM you have to provide samples, with FM the sound system is independent because it generates its own sound at high quality frequencies.

>>3070954
SNES sounds like real instrumentation with 2 pounds of foam shoved down inside.
>>
>>3070960
The 2600's sound is also completely "foam free"... Does that mean it is also more advanced sound-wise? Of course not.

By your own admission the SNES sounded like real instrumentation. It also did voices a million times better. Everything else is semantics. Feel free to prefer X consoles sound subjectively... but the MD/Genesis was less advanced. Reality.
>>
>>3059698
>Arcade
Hey now, give the Neo Geo credit where it deserves.
>>
>>3070976
>less advanced

Advanced capabilities mean shit if the creators don't know how to use them.
>>
>>3072092
2600 programmers really knew how to use what they had and SNES programmers obviously didn't. What crap soundtracks and effects the SNES had, I mean, come on.

It's irrelevant that the SNES sounded like real instrumentation.

Wow, you sure showed me.

Real talk, though, it all comes back to the fact that the Genesis sound chip is, at its core, a synthesizer. You have to really know what the fuck you're doing, which most of the time involved writing your own custom sound drivers, like Furniss and the Technosoft crew did. If you're too lazy or untalented to make the YM2612 put out anything beyond the standard GEMS screeches, it's immediately obvious.

On the other hand, the SNES gives you a huge sample library to play around with. It's a lot easier to just slap something together and have it sound relatively unoffensive to the ear. So if you're a lazy hack, you have to really fuck up with the sample selection for it to become obvious.

I've already bitched about the SNES MK soundtracks, which had all the life sucked out them, but the most atrociously bad example I can think of is the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, which actually looks, sounds and plays worse than the original 8-bit games:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da8M6m5vaZY

>dat muted guitar
>dat xylophone percussion dominance
>dat completely out-of-place trumpets

Absolutely disgusting. It's not just the Basilisk Minefield, either; the entire soundtrack is like this.

Oh, and it's censored on top of that:

Here's Yoshi's Island's:

http://vocaroo.com/i/s0xp5HqR5FlF

Why these are all at the same sample rate, in-game they're all sped up to different pitches. A 1000ms sample sped up 2x is basically a 500ms sample with twice the quality.

One of the greatest musical artist of all time...

hated the Genesis and didn't want to be associated with it due to its poor sound.

“Jackson pulled his name from the game — but not his music — because he was disappointed by how different the music sounded on Sega’s console when compressed from that ‘high profile’ sound to its BLEEPS AND BLOOPS."

"Michael wanted his name taken off the credits if they couldn’t get it to sound better."

I prefer the genesis version. It is far superior. You may think it sounds like a malfunctioning fart machine... but I say it has SOUL. All the SNES did was sound EXACTLY like the actual song. How is that original? Plus it was muffled! I could hear the Genesis farts and bloops CRYSTAL CLEAR.

snes was capable of the best sound but only a grant kirkhope who works hard to craft something could make it happen. any idiot could spit out something for the genesis and have it atleast sound ok.

result is (assuming a company spends the same amount on both songs) the genesis ends up having better music on multiplat games even though the snes had the potential to be better.

Wow. Did the Genesis EVER reproduce actual guitars/instrumentation like this? The SNES sounds almost exactly like the original Aerosmith song.
>>
>>3076528
What's this thread arguing about? Subjective or objective opinions?

Subjectively you can say you prefer the sound of the Genesis... just like you can say you prefer the sound of the NES, Master System, Coleco Vision or 7800. There's nothing to argue. That's what SUBJECTIVITY is. Preference. But those were all less capable machines sound-wise. That's the reality of the hardware.

Objectively, the SNES had superior sound hardware. That's OBJECTIVE. Fact. The Genesis COULD NOT do things like the Aerosmith song verbatim or some of the fancy stuff heard in their first party games. It simply couldn't.

You don't like what the programmers did in some SNES games vs Genesis games? That's cool. But again, that's SUBJECTIVE. Some of my favorite tunes are from the OG Gameboy Batman game,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hcm2Ekpk-XE
but I'm not going to argue the Gameboy is more powerful than the SNES.

Look at it this way... if Michal Jackson wanted to put "Stranger in Moscow" in a SNES it would have sounded just like it (see the Aerosmith song) and he wouldn't have been upset with the result like he was with the Sonic 3 deal.

The lead instrument is the only decent thing and even then it's muffled as shit and on short loops.

FM sounds way more natural and expressive even when it's not accurate to a real guitar.

Yes NES sounds better too, your shitty system can't even do more than 32khz.

Huh? Are you talking of Generation X?

I thought this song was cooler than the credits in the snes version.
Very BAD recording though.

that
>>3075285

obviously a huge difference in capabilities

SNES sounds like an actual aerosmith recording

Genesis sounds like something you could basically hear on a Gameboy or NES/Master System
>>
>>3076891
>SNES sounds like an actual aerosmith recording
no it sounds like a half-assed sampler tried to sound real
>>

>SNES sounds like an actual aerosmith recording
For about five seconds. Then it loops to conserve memory. Seriously though when you can emulate the arcade original or even the Playstation version, the SNES port of Generation X is completely obsolete. Not to mention:
>playing a light gun game on a d-pad
>>
>>3076915
Not to mention
>playing a western lightgun game
>playing a western arcade at all

By that I mean cart space

>>3076903
You realize the SNES hit the shelves in 1990, right?

>>3076915
>>3076917
They were debating the sound capabilities of the Genesis vs SNES, not the merits of a crappy lightgun game

So what, it's still a poor qualty sampler, that doesn't make it necessarily better than a synth.

>>3076928
ill give you that

>>3076927
Eh, the genesis can also do samples just fine.

>SNES ver actually sounds like a band

Have you listened to Green Jello outside of the Maximum Carnage soundtrack? Even when they play actual songs, they don't even sound like a band.

>>3069447
I wouldn't say they are technically superior when the SNES version cuts out Intestinal Distress entirely.

some pretty great stuff you posted but i don't think any were even released on the genesis
>>

A shame not too many arcade machines mixed the best of both worlds of SNES/Genesis' sound chip strengths. Some Konami arcade cabs (Sunset Riders comes to mind) did it, I think Turtles in Time as well?

I've been waiting for a chance to post this.

Two different compositions that both invoke fear and anxiety.
Both make good of their respective systems and fit in perfectly with the Alien theme.
There's a little bit more going on in the Genny track though.
