I used to think of the shambler as a mini-boss first time playing through Quake but in custom maps they're just a regular monster, they're everywhere. You can bait his melee which makes it beatable with a regular shotgun but it's a little difficult. Usually I just bait it's lighting/colgate toothpaste attack and run around a corner and basically cheese him that way.

Looking at the numbers, the grunts melee is weaker than quake shotgun, his hornets are weaker and slower than nail gun. Shambles smash attack would kill grunt in one hit with grunt having hard difficulty health. Grunt is a baby back bitch compared to shambler.

make a subfolder called something, put the pak file in that folder, make a shortcut for quakespasm and add -game something at the end of the shortcut's path, like this:

They're harder to kill with the rocket launcher than the SNG/Nailgun because they take half damage from explosions. Meaning they're about 3 SNG's worth of damage each. SNG's shoot 10 per second and does 18 damage. They have 600 health. That's 3.4 seconds of constant spray.
Rocket launcher shoots 1.25 per second and does 50 damage. Twelve rockets for 600 damage and that's 14.4 seconds.
Which sounds easier?

Thunderbolt/shafting does 30 damage per bolt, 10 bolts per second. Twenty bolts. Two seconds.
Guess what you want to use on them. If you have Quad even more so

The Lightning Gun is my go-to weapon for multiple Shamblers. It wrecks them.

The SNG is fine for multiple Shamblers as well, but that's usually my crowd control weapon.

These instructions are a bit wonky, you won't get the special HUD elements to work by doing this.
Mission pack 1 should be installed in a subdirectory called 'hipnotic'. Then run Quakespasm with '-game hipnotic -hipnotic' on the command line. Same thing with the Rogue mission pack. quakespasm -game rogue -rogue.
