how in the good god damn do i get good at this game? i've been playing for years and i'm no better than the first time i picked it up. any tips?

MK 1 doesn't have too much variety, each character is very similar to each other. It's not a hard game to beat.

Pretty much this. The AI is shit and cheats constantly. Unfortunately it's also shit enough to not realize when it's been swept 5 times in a row. Winning MK single player is all about finding one thing the AI doesn't react well to and doing it over and over.
In a genre where almost all the single player modes are terrible, MK takes the cake.
