I only give game recommendations to people who preserve the proper aspect ratio when they upscale.

Recommendations are all you get. You want to experience retro vidya? Then you got to figure stuff out yourself. No Internet except if you are stuck for, like, a few days. The only reason I say that is because you don't have buddies to talk games with.

PS: this is bad timing after saying not to use the internet, but if memory serves, Star Tropics came with some manuals and maps that may have game related content on them. You actually may need to look that shit up.

yeah i try my best not to use walkthroughs and shit, but these old puzzles are just too fucking much sometimes

not OP but i need your opinion on this /vr/, see, i realized a few days ago that i am fucking addicted to beating the same games i beat before many times years ago, some of them 7, maybe 8 times already, but i want variety, i want to truly go deeper into the waters and play all kinds of shit you know? So what did i do? I made a "must play" list and i planned to not play anything but that game until i finish it, them jump to the next one and do the same, force myself to complete the games instead of just playing them once and leaving them there,

problem is that, first game is fucking 1942 with 31 levels and a lot of repetition, and i need to beat all of them in one sitting because no passwords or saves (it has unlimited continues but i can't turn it off otherwise they are lost, also no savestates are allowed either)

So what do i do? Do i skip and play something i might enjoy instead? Force myself to beat this fairly fun but repetitive game? i don't know what to do and i am stuck for a few days already
>>
>>3054746
forgot to add, my first attempt at beating this game was 2 days ago (i think) and i could barely beat 4 levels in a row before getting bored, i don't want to sound like someone who can't into a bit of challenge, i just really hate repetitive gameplay in some situations, specially if its a shmup
>>
>>3054747
If you are not having fun, then don't play the game. Simple as that.

Keep in mind though 2 days is nothing. That's like expecting to learn to play an instrument in 2 days. These games don't coddle you, but they can be very rewarding once you've master them because you actually overcame a challenge, unlike 99% of modern games which are engineered to make you feel like you are over coming challenge.

To this point, I still play Gauntlet, but have never beaten it. Doesn't mean it's not fun to play.

Some other suggestions:
Gauntlet
Shadowgate
Mega Man (any of them, but I like 2 and 3 a lot)
>>
>>3054673

Looked like Custard's Revenge for a sec.
>>
>>3054756
The problem is not really beating the game since infinite continues, its just going through the chore of beating every single level with the same enemies and bosses over and over, but thanks for the advice
>>
>>3054683
But you're not filling the whole screen!

I had some chinese GBA cart with 1942 (emulated) on it.

What I did was play it over about 3 days while leaving the emulator open and paused in the background (if not playing, meant i couldn't use my GBA but I had a DS by that stage anyway.)

So assuming you're emulating, you could always try similar. It's not really doing it properly, sure, but a kid at the time could theoretically turn the TV off and leave the NES on.

If you like tactical rpg then there is a translation of Just Breed that I've been playing. Just about to beat it and it has been fun

Bitch, manuals existed for a reason. Playing a NES RPG without a world map is not fucking fun.

This. I played Final Fantasy alongside the manual, and alongside something that explained which spells were useless. I'm not wasting my time with bugged spells
>>
Some of my lesser discussed faves:

Eliminator Boat Duel
Roller Ball
Pinball
Lunar Pool
Adventure Island 2
Balloon Fight
Tiny Toon Adventures

You guys are absolutely right that stuff is ok, because that's a large part of what made gaming cool back then. That being said, I would still stay away from walkthroughs until you've beaten a game once, or are stuck for like a week of trying to figure things out. Player's guides are a gray area for me because, while they are walkthroughs, they have tons of art work and lore to make a game much more engrossing.
