God damn that was fantastic
>dat prologue
>shit ton of events
>all them cute girls
>them mini games
>RPG combat
>even the support guy characters are cute
Other than the soundtrack using a bunch of public domain tunes here and there it always pisses me off when games do that and the cockroach girl voice actress raping my ears that was pretty close to perfect, is there a dating sim I'm not aware of that beats all that?

Is Tokimeki 2 better than the first? Having to be on watch so you don't blow up any mines was pretty annoying.

Man, Dating sims are such a huge investment sometimes.
>>
>>3042813
Yeah, in pretty much every way.
You still have to watch out for mines, though, and this time you get to deal with a clingy childhood friend and her overprotective friend being a constant timebomb duo, but I really enjoyed that aspect of it, really ads some spice to the game.
>>
Doukyuusei is funny as hell and well-written (in Japanese at least). It can get boring without a walkthrough, but serendipity is really a core part of the experience. I started using a walkthrough after a while, but regretted it in the end.

The music is just fucking awful, though.

Doukyuusei 2 is supposed to be even better, but I haven't gotten around to playing it.

Not too fond of the stress it brings with it but it's not like it was that hard to deal with the mines. I never did more than one route now that I think about it though.

Were there ever any dating sims or visual novels with same-sex (male) options? I've never come across any. In fact, I don't remember seeing anything like that before The Sims came along. As popular as these genres were in Japan, it seems like there would have been something geared toward the /cm/ audience.
>>
>>3043338
Not /vr/ for sure. Eroge scene before 2000 was surprisingly straight, barely any yuri and absolutely no gays.
>>
>>3043338
True Love had a gay option.
Real yaoi games only came out 2000 onward.
>>
>>3043407
>True Love

It had a path for it sure, but no CGs and nothing as fleshed out as the other endings so I don't know if that would count. More like a novelty ending maybe.

Good game though. An ideal first step into the genre.

Okay so I got this running on a virtual machine.

So far not too impressed. Like many Japanese Windows ports, it uses some kind of ugly filter for the portraits of the characters. Sound is pretty much the same. At least the game is WAY WAY faster.
>>
>>3043401
Nope. Janis was a pioneer in this area. See Sotsugyou Ryokou (1996) and Hoshi no Sasayaki (1998). Also Loop, True Love, Crescent Moon Girl, Mirage 2, KO-KO-RO. May Club had a cross-dressing character. Yozakura (1998) had a full gay ending with CG. There are others I'm forgetting.

Gay options weren't common back then simply because it was mostly outside the target market, but by the late 1990s it wasn't completely out of the ordinary. Around the same, the first dedicated Boy's Love labels like Alice Blue started showing up to cater to the gay market exclusively.

For a more recent example, go play Majikoi. It's mostly hetero, but there are some great male characters with their own endings.

Are you gay?
>>
No but I live in Japan and a friend of mine is a Japanese artist who is gay. He hates how foreigners automatically assume that Japanese are super homophobic. They're really not.

Even the straight guys are a little gay over here. Have you ever seen a group of Japanese high school buddies fooling around and grabbing each other? In any country, they'd look totally, flamingly gay.

I was at a Japanese wedding reception one time, and all the friends of the groom suddenly stripped down to speedos and started dancing in a conga line on stage. Shit's crazy.

Like with a lot of other things in Japan, you'll find that the young people are super cool, and the really old people are sweet because they just don't give a fuck anymore. But in the middle, there are these 45-60 year old shitlords who think they know what's best for everyone. Avoid those people and you'll be alright.
>>
>>3045051
>I was at a Japanese wedding reception one time, and all the friends of the groom suddenly stripped down to speedos and started dancing in a conga line on stage. Shit's crazy.
Doing an impression of the YATTA! skit isn't necessarily gay though.
>>
>>3045065
>Doing an impression of the YATTA! skit isn't necessarily gay though.
That's my point, though. A homophobic society wouldn't permit straight guys to prance around in their underwear like that, for fear of being perceived as gay. Japanese masculinity is much more flexible in that respect, regardless of whether you're actually straight or gay.
>>
>>3043221

>>
>>3044358

BL is marketed at women, not gay men.
>>
>>3045112
You're absolutely right, but there is some overlap. Fujoshi are just a bigger group, I guess. But games for the gay market did start appearing around that time, like Hotaru (炎多留).
>>
Has anyone ever played Sotsugyou (Graduation)? It's supposedly the original dating sim, predating both Doukyuusei and Tokimemo. Although it's not exactly a dating sim, because you're a teacher helping the "problem girls" at school to graduate.
>>
>>3045263
Some will call Tokyo Nampa Street the first, others Girl's Garden. Wikipedia also mentions Gakuen Monogatari and Galppo Club.
Graduation should really be considered more of a raising sim.
>>
>>3045263
I played Graduation II on Saturn.
And yeah I'd put that in the raising sim genre (well, it says so on the box).
Like Princess Maker and Wizard's Harmony and such.
Also that new Trillion game that's baffling everyone on /v/ because the English market has no history of this sort of game >>>/v/329859083
>>
>>3045294
>>3045332
OK thanks.

I've actually played a little of Tokyo Nanpa Street, and I wouldn't exactly call it a dating sim. It's a "get into some girl's pants" sim. There's not really any dating going on.

I like the relationship development in these games, like in Doukyuusei and Pia Carrot.
>>
>>3045051
Nobody said that /vr/ eroges were homophobic, though, just "surprisingly straight".
And some gay routes in 10 otherwise straight games out of hundreds of them is pretty fucking straight, especially compared to the amount of homoge today.
>>
>>3045368
I was responding to the Anon who said there were "absolutely no gays" in Japanese eroge before 2000. That's simply not true. Obviously there is much more variety today because the market has expanded and diversified.

Besides, rather than being "surprisingly straight", I think having even a small number of gay options in a game genre that is overwhelmingly targeted at hereto men is pretty surprising. When was the last time you saw a guy suddenly start going down on another guy in otherwise straight porn?

I also wasn't trying to imply that anyone here is homophobic. It was just a general rant directed at no one in particular.

Anything I should know for Douykuusei?
I have the DMM version which seems practically identical to the PC98 original save for an annotated map feature, multiple saves and graphics/sound.
God Knows taught me that the number of events is more important than the content of those events.

Do I have to sleep? I once accidentally got locked in the school and just passed time instead of paying the guy that lets you rest.
>>
The PC98 and DOS/Windows versions are significantly different. The story was edited to be more romantic overall.

I don't think there's any real penalty for not sleeping, but I usually returned home at the end of every day, so who knows.

Don't worry about conserving money so much. There are several ways to get more over the course of the game, like construction site and the quiz guys.

It's impossible to do everything in one playthrough, so just fuck around and enjoy the experience, then go back and do things differently next time. That's what the game is about, really.
>>
So I actually enjoy dating sims but the time limits and game-over criteria tend to turn me off. Can anyone recommend one that just flows naturally, where you don't tend to get stuck up on where to go, or if you're being 100% efficient?

I don't have nearly enough 80's-early 90's style anime in my life.
>>
>>3046975
Tokimemo 2 from the OP is pretty relaxed.
Time limit isn't really an issue, unless you want to go for hard to get characters like the teacher, and you will have to actively try to get a bad end since childhood friend will be always all over your dick no matter how much of a fuckup you are.
>>
Sounds like you want a visual novel rather than a dating sim. You should try To Heart.

In dating sims, the "sim" part of it is a deliberate game mechanic to make things more challenging. That's kind of the point.

But since we're talking about Doukyuusei in particular, the requirements for about half the girls are really obvious. You can get Miho, Misa, Satomi, the sensei, Mako, and Ako without even trying, because they basically stay in the same place the entire game.

The time limit is also a non-issue because you can get the flags for 8-10 girls at the same time if you plan ahead. Efficiency is definitely not required.

The "DMM original version" for Windows is different from the first Windows port.
It's non-voiced and supposedly has the PC98 text.

I hated the first Windows port; it ruined so many good scenes and even characters.
I haven't gotten around to the DMM version but if it is what it says it is then it's probably the best version of the game. (Though the Saturn version has a great voice cast.)

I think this isn't really a dating sim, although there is a date on the game and 3 different endings, it's mostly a linear visual novel and basically you have no control over the outcome, you just select which ending do you want to see.
But damn I played this one again recently and I enjoyed it a lot. Left me with a bittersweet feeling though.

This was the first game of this kind I played back in the 90s on PS1, I played it in japanese so I didn't know what the fuck was going on, but I played (er, watched) through the whole thing anyway.

Been playing the PC version now.
While the game itself is pretty basic and you can barely interact, the production quality is top notch. Most of the scenes are still images but they're very crisp and clear, like watching an HD still from the actual TV series. And the few animated scenes there are are pretty amazing, especially considering it's all sprite-based, nothing is FMV.

>Sounds like the whole ratings were a mess.

Ratings boards have always enforced arbitrary standards. The ESRB is especially full of shit. If a game like The Sims were to have two characters of the opposite sex get married and be able to engage in G-rated affection, the game would be rated E. Include the option for same-sex Sims to engage in the same actions and suddenly the game gets slapped with a T rating (or M / AO with some countries' ratings boards)

There was actually a documentary about this phenomenon (although aimed at the MPAA, it does largely apply to ratings boards in general)

Yeah that was strange, especially considering Can Can Bunny Premier came out the same month, and that was red label with interactive sex.
I've always wondered if elf misunderstood what was allowed or they just wanted to make it like that for some reason.
Later yellow-label ports of elf games like Doukyuusei (NEC interchannel handled the port) and Kakyuusei (elf ported it themselves) are full of sex. Only Nonomura got that treatment.

Premiere's a linear "nanpa" (where you go after one girl after another in the same timeline) game with a command-menu adventure interface like Snatcher or Eve Burst Error (or other nampa games like Tenchi-tachi no Gogo). I guess people would call it a VN these days, though nobody uses that interface anymore.
Extra is similar but replaces the command menu with clicking on items of interest on screen.
Premiere 2 is a map & schedule/time limit game like Large Ponpon or Prime Girl, or a simplified Doukyuusei.

The beginning is pretty slow and everything feels kind of random. Keep going and the story with each girl starts to pick up. The game can go by really fast if you focus on just one girl. Just do her events for that day and then go to sleep.

Yes, its Kakyuusei 2. Just confirmed it. Man the rage.
>>
>>3056954
It's a recent anime movie that's also called "Doukyuusei".
Yeah, it's BL
>>
It's not the best one, but certainly a classic.
>>
True Love Story seems to be one of the more decent Tokimemo clone series.

I love Kakyuusei 2, not as much as the first one mostly due to having fewer characters, but it's still great.
I don't like Tamaki's story, because it's rather un-Kakyuusei-like (there's no feeling of progress with her because the game limits you to treating her like a friend until one day she suddenly switches on her own from her boyfriend to you), but I didn't have any particular expectations going in so I didn't feel betrayed the way some people apparently did.
There's eight other characters besides Tamaki, and I had a good time with them.

Sentimental Graffiti is at least worth watching the bizarre opening sequence. The game itself is pretty awful from what I've heard, though. Supposedly most people prefer the anime and radio dramas based off of it to the actual game.

Right now? Got the link?

No, It was around a month ago, forgot to say about it. And the thread is quite off topic too.

If its about Kakyuusei 2's main girl, someone will surely fill you in.

Actually Elf closed down definitely last year. Their site will close later this month, so grab the support patches now.
>>
>>3057656
Was there a thread about that?
I'm not sure if it's even sad since they had been dead either way.
Are other studios grabbing the licenses aside from Yu-no?
>>
>>3057676
>Was there a thread about that?

Not a specific thread, but there were some posts on the J-PC thread back in October/November.

Probably the last time they actually tried with something was with the DK4 remake and that was almost 10 years ago.

Fuck yeah! I just imported Tokimemo 1 for the Saturn and what the fuck, I got a girl under the tree despite going out of my way to mostly study, work out, and look nice and ignoring the girls for the most part.

Are there default girls that you get even if every other girl in the game is an exploding bomb? I was kind hoping I could send the MC out to the tree where he'd be horribly disappointed.

Doukyuusei will probably arrive in a few months with a bazillion other saturn games, but I don't care about that one as much.

I learned the language without any real goal in mind other than maybe to teach English. Nowadays my learning is relegated to Dating sims and other games. I think having a goal and achieving it is far less sad.

You have to work real hard to get some of these girls to be so negative towards you.

Is there any difference in tone between those?

No, you can only go after his sister.

Not in speech. They're both anata.
In writing, you could argue that the kanji feels more stiff and formal, but they're essentially the same.
>>
>>3058794
that's misogynous and homo- and trasphobic :(
>>
>>3045051
I heard that masculinity is seen as relating to homosexuality there, and that's why femininity is the norm.
>>
>>3058826
I hope you're joking. Failing to accommodate a particular minority group is not the same thing as being whatever-phobic.

>>3058850
First of all, there has always been a link between bodybuilding and homosexual culture, even in America.

Second, Japanese ideals of masculinity have always been more, hmm, "metrosexual" compared to the West, as embodied by the concept of bunbu ryoudou (文武両道), for example.

Third, to a certain degree, being tough and masculine hearkens back to all the fucked up shit Imperial Japan did in the first half of the 20th century. Look at Yukio Mishima (who was also a bodybuilder, and possibly bisexual). I think being more effeminate is a way of rejecting the old militaristic ways.

Anyway, this thread has got me replaying ToHeart now. Aoi is such a little badass.

Any dating sim recommendation list?

I feel like I've played everything mentioned in this thread ;_;

I've always been interested in that but never got around to it.

Fuuraiki.

non-vr: Kimikiss, Amagami, Photokano
>>
>>3058914
They aren't really retro but Enterbain games are pretty good. Not a fan of Kimi-kiss though.

This, the game is so comfy and interesting. I beat the route with the girl that had dissociative personality disorder. Is there a way to actually win the writing contest?

That OP is fantastic.

I didn't even know until just recently that the anime (Sentimental Journey) is based on a game. It's not even done in a way that would suggest it.

I watched a bunch of LPs on Nicovideo of it a few years back. I think the guy actually cleared every girl's route in TLS2.

Only the first one. They are straight VN's, they dont have dating sim mechanics, but some people like them because it's a nakige.

What makes a dating sim?
Time restrictions, money management and some affinity attributes?

Three Sisters' Story was very memorable for me. Very ero, but a surprisingly good plot. Graphics are heavily dated, but what're you gonna do? It was originally DOS.
