Super Contra as in the arcade version, not the watered down NES reworking.
>>
>>3017553
This thread made me try Hard Corps for the first time. It's hard going, coming from the SNES version, where you can hold R to stay still and fire. I figured out you can switch to that mode by pressing A + B but it's still a bitch to get used to. Plus it makes ducking while firing a little less straightforward.

I like it so far though.
>>
Contra 3 is more of what the series is really about, Hard Corps is more of a "hey Treasure-guys, even though you're gone we can still make kick ass action games, sincerely, Konami."

I personally like Hard Corps better, but 3 ist awesome in a different way.
>>
>>3017553

i can't even beat the first contra so I dunno

games where you die in 1 hit are just no for me.
>>
I never gave a proper chance to Contra HC yet even though I'm segafag, I really need some free time to dedicate to this game and finish it in my room. On other hand I played a lotta C3, even though I preffer side scrolling the meme about overhead levels is exaggerated, they're ok.

My favourite track on it is Stage 3:

I like Contra III more. and it's not even close for me. than again I like the top down stages which some people seem to hate.

I hope you didn't unironically enjoy 4, because that game was hot garbage. Way Forward is incapable of designing a decent videogame to save their life.

I'm not here to cape for 4. I found 4 decent but flawed. I'm talking about Shattered Soldier.

Well I'm using a PS2 pad into a USB box so yeah I should probably map the extra buttons then. I wasn't sure if this game supported it.

Alien Wars is good but Hard Corps is better.

It'd be a dicier toss-up if the overhead stages didn't exist, but I'd still prefer HC.

>mfw people say "hard corpse"
>>
>>3020534
I called the game "Hard cops" for a long time (I didn't speak english and never bothered with reading the logo apparently)
>>
>>3020546
I used to think it was pronounced "corpse". Same for Blast Corps.
>>
>>3019984
I used the 6 button mode and discovered the I - II thing at the top, which lets you switch with a button I've mapped to a PS2 shoulder button.

It kind of feels a bit more like 3 now, I press R to switch between moving while firing and firing stationary. But I keep thinking it's the SNES version, expecting it to let me move and fire if I let go of R.

The control is breaking me a bit but I'm enjoying it. I've got to the first boss. At least I think it is - the robot guy on top of the skyscraper.

The fucker landed right on me the first time.
>>
>>3018497
It's beatable with Konami code. But I can't beat it with 3 lives either. When I played it as a kid I never got past the second level.
>>
Hard Corps, not even a contest.

>4 different characters to play
>Fantastic visuals, like the big segmented-sprite bosses and explosions effects.
>Lots of bosses and mini bosses
>Amazing soundtrack
>Multiple paths and endings adding to its replay value
>Arguably one of the best game intros made

There's so much love put into this game and it shows, even if it was made as an answer to Treasure. It has that sense of speed and adrenaline to it for which the Genesis/MD is known.
Hard Corps is one of those games I boot up and finish regularly, I'm actually thinking in Speedrunning it.

Don't get me wrong, Alien Wars is a fantastic game too (like most Contra games), but I ultimately feel HC as the better game.
>>
>>3020875
I haven't looked into the other characters yet. Does the selection bring much to the game?
>>
>>3022275
Yes, gameplay varies. Both humans are jack of all trades, master of none. Fang is the most powerful char from the roster but he's hard to master and has a huge hitbox. Browny is the weakest by some difference, but he's also the safest choice if you want to stay alive.

Overall the pattern should be:
-Browny to learn the game and stay alive
-One of the humans when you're more grounded
-Fang when you wanna start to own the game
>>
>>3022275

As this >>3022341 anon said, although Brownie isn't weak at all, his Electromagnetic Yo-Yo (C weapon) is the hardest hitting weapong in the game. Also, Brownie can double jump and hover in the air.

The thing is Fang outclasses him in damage thanks to a glitch in his charging weapon, which let him do fully charged shots instantly if you swap fast between B and D.
If you can do it consistently, Fang destroys bosses, like killing the first stage boss in his first cycle.

On a related note, there's a rom hack in progress called Hard Corps Robotron which lets you play with the Robot characters from the European release (Probotector) and each one has new weapons and varying amount of hit points. Sadly it's russian made, so it's a bit hard to keep track of it.
>>
>>3022879
sounds interesting, where can i find it?
>>
>>3019215
>One recorded from a shoddy emulator
>Other from actual hardware
>The same

It's different with SNES emulation where the S-SMP has been mastered to the point that you can make games arguably sound superior to the real thing at this point if you know what you are doing, but in the Mega Drive/Genesis case, no emulator has successfully emulated the Yamaha YM2612 FM synthesis yet. And in Professor G's case, he's not even recording from a high end emulator, causing samples to sound off to not at all.
>>
>>3022341
>Browny
>Weakest

What What What? Browny is top tier in this game. His Yo Yo destroys bosses.

Fang and Browny are godlike.

The humans are average. Ray is a bit better than Sheena.

After making some research, here it is:

http://www.emu-land.net/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=65247.0;attach=67382

Apparently the hack not only does add the robot characters but expands the game to play all the stages and fills in the story connecting it to other Contra games.

Here's a full playthrough of the hack:

I think we were fairly close 5 years ago because Kega Fusion sounds stunning. The only thing left to emulate is the Model 1's trademark echo effect. And that's a thing I'd really like to see someday.
