Fan games are sorta intereting in that they occupy the space between rom hack and original game. Often using sprites from the original games, but using new engines.

Any worth playing? And more importantly, is there any attempt to archive all of them?

I'm enjoying Castlevania The Bloodletting

Nope, there is not.

I wanted to, but there are so many fan games out there, I don't know which ones are worth archiving.

>>
>>3017340
>>3017337

You can just archive all of them, and treat it as a No intro collection of its own. It's probably only a few hundred GB total.

As long as they're all archived, people can then pick the ones that are worthwhile themselves.
>>
>>3017347
Yep, you do it first.
>>
>>3017349

I'll plan on it. Once I get a new computer, and a new External. I doubt that an exhaustive list could be more than 1 TB. You could split them up into batches.

some Mega Man fan games are plentiful (whether they are called megaman or are clones), some are pretty decent, notably the "demakes" of 7 and 8.

MFGG has an endless supply of Mario fangames, but a lot of them are made by children or young teenagers.

super metroid has some good hacks, and most of them break SMs aesthetic enough to be "new game" like.

>sonic after the Sequel

This reminds me:
Sonic 3D
http://www.moddb.com/games/sonic-the-hedgehog-3d

Powered by EDuke32 Build Engine, it's a really great application of classic Sonic platforming into 3D. And I mean that, 3D Sonic games were nothing like previous Sonics, but this is to classic Sonic what Mario64 is to classic Mario.

Tons of fun.

Psycho Waluigi was a lot of fun, would definitely recommend. For anyone wondering it's basically Wario meets Kirby. You enter levels with the Linate goal to collect coins, by using a psychics iris can pick up and throw enemies, or use their powers until they run out. No lives, you just lose money when you die.
Decently challenging without without ever getting romhack bullshit hard.

>>3022004
>>3022426
Posted this in another thread will repost for anyone curious:
The fangames Sonic: Before/After the Sequel are pretty dope. Although fair warning their more CD/3&K than 1/2, with a dash of Kirby. CD in that you can super peel out and all the music is MP3 (one of the composers for official Sonic called it amazing), 3&K in physics, stage layout (at times linear but exploration is possible) and Kirby in that occasionally you get powers (in Before when you enter the water stage you're given a non-loseble Bubble Shield with double jump, in After some levels have a Beam power for Sonic and Smirror for Tails, thanking their only forced on you for one level, oh and the Super Sonic ending zone is... Unique). Just don't play the third one, Chrono Adventure. It gets too heavy with the powers and has a story like an awful fanfic.

I just downloaded CV Bloodletting and was very disappointed. It looks like CV, it sounds like CV. They obviously did their work and it shows. The problem is the underlying game. The biggest problem is with the level design. Already on stage 1 they have platforms that can only be accessed by backflipping off the edge of the previous platform, and not as special optional paths, but as the main required steps. I'm not against 'advanced' jumps, but having them as the crux of the game and as early as the first stage is just unprofessional. What's more, the enemy placements are not put together with any real thought. It's just "here's a bunch of bats" or "here's the obligatory zombie-spawning ruined foyer/hallway". As a result, there's none of the complex push-and-pull of managing your abilities against the enemies and environments that Classic CV always embodies. It feels more like the aimless enemy generation that permeates the symphony-style games, but shoved into the classic CV formula, making me wonder if the creator shouldn't have just done a Symphony-style game instead.
>>
>>3029765 (cont)

The more mechanical issues come with how the characters are together. Things are very loose where they should be tight. The hitbox on the whip is a big one, I know that in some CVs you can damage enemies by hitting them with the 'top' of the whip in the animation that plays when you're about to send it outward. That's not a problem, but what is a problem is when you are in this animation, and a bat that's clearly above and in front of you gets hit. This problem extends to the whip attack itself as well, it's as if there's a huge aura of death around your whip which leads to enemies dying without even being touched by it. Sometimes you can even whip out one way, then instantly turn around (so fast that the whip doesn't extend outward to your original facing at all) and still you will hit an enemy that is where your whip would have been had you not turned around. The whole thing feels very sloppy, and when combined with the level designs just gives the game an unmistakeable air of amateurism. There are some minor bugs which I'm willing to overlook, but the inherent problems to the game itself are simply too much to bear.

I wanted to like Bloodletting a lot. The title screen is great. The opening cutscene, the beginning bridge segment, and the foyer entrance were fantastic. In every way it really looked and sounded like a lost mid-90's CV game. It's just unfortunate that after you get into it, the game quickly falls apart, and demonstrates that the creator, despite his clear passion, simply lacks an understanding of what makes the games so great to play. His heart is in the right place and his audiovisual talents are clearly there, he just needs to really study his level design and tighten up his mechanics.
>>
>>3029765
Great review I would love to hear what you think about Castlevania lecarde chronicles.
>>
>>3026910
So I tried that Sonic 3D. It controls like a 2D to 3D Sonic game but the level design feels wrongs. The way they are huge open zones makes it feel more like Sonic has been put in Mario 64. For that's what you expected than okay I guess, but I prefer Adventures more "linear with detours route". Something feels wrong about easily being able to end levels with over 100, sometimes 200 rings. The special stages just being tiny levels with lots of rings and non enemies were disappointing but probably a limitation of the engine.
The Mach speed segments are better than the trainwrecks from Adventure, although the technically without running on the walls and roof really they're impossible to fuck up. Boss fights are tedious, and feel impossible to win without taking damage, a big no no.
Perhaps the worst things are the short overall length, and the midi quality music. Seriously the one Sonic games are always got wrong even when everything else was wrong was the music. Should have just ripped some of Adventure's music, I mean they already did for the invincible tune.

Well, it's not done yet, but AM2R is pretty good.
It's a remake of Metroid II, in the style of Metroid Zero Mission. There's a demo available that goes through a little bit more than half the game at this point, as well as a tech demo showcasing an earlier version of the engine that is basically it's own small game (Metroid: Confrontation.)
http://metroid2remake.blogspot.ca/
>>
>>3026910
Reminds me of Sonic Robo Blast 2. If you're looking for a decent 3D Sonic fan game that plays similar to the genesis ones, I highly recommend it. It has online multiplayer and since it's based off of the doom engine it's very easily moddable. Also has a fair amount of secrets.
>>
>>3034875
I started playing that after i finished the other 3D game and while mostly well designed (the Nights Supersonic levels are 10/10), it's so fucling slippery and hard to control - although that might only apply to Sonic. Also the music is disappointingly generic. Come on, Sonic Games = great music. It just had generic, Marioesque background midis.
>>
>>303510
Sonic is slippery as fuck and makes the first few levels super easy, which makes the difficulty spike more apparent later in the game. Plus multiplayer racing levels become a huge thok fest if you use Sonic. Try the other characters,

I have not much enthusiasm for this because I actually like Metroid II. Not to say I'd necessarily mind it being enhanced or remade, but I feel like the sentiment is that it's this shit game that needs to be "fixed" by turning it into Super Metroid.

How is it anyway?

>>
>>3039475
Maybe it's not about "fixing" it, it's just that Zero Mission was a "new age" remake of the original, and they author things II deserves the same. Ya know, improve a things that were only created by limitations of old hardware, like 4 colours.

>>
>>3042938
>it's the exact same shit as sonic 1 but with slightly better art
Meh, nostalgiafags are pathetic, I still liked what they did with freedom planet better even if the story was cringeworthy.
By the way those loop de loops are a waste of time, in a normal playthrough you'd want to avoid those. They should at least put some rings in it to make them less pointless.
>>
>>3043043
Who, the Rabbit called Feel who is more a prototype of Ristar/Cream? Or the giant monkey who plays guitar in Sonic's band? Or maybe the giant chicken who sings in his band? It can't be the crocodile, he clearly became Vector. Maybe it's the wolf wearing an American t-shirt? Or the bulldog? Or maybe it's the weird Sonic with a human face? Or maybe the guy that looks like a fat, adult Bart Simpson? Maybe one of the generic knights that look like they belong in Project Dream? Or even maybe that weird shitty "totally not you" nerd Sonc from the comics where Amy (sorry, "Eri") came from?

Is Eggman gonna also be wearing his Pajamas the entire game? Is Sonic gonna engage in some nice unsettling, uncanny valley romance with Madonna too?

None of this is relevant. It's all cutting room floor development garbage. Oswald was actually in shit before Mickey. He was just a sketch they decided against using.
