So why did Atari introduced the 7800 a year after they launched the 5200? Why didn't they just try to push the 5200 a bit more?
>>
I thought the 5200 was launched in 82 and the 7800 in 86.
>>
What I want to know is why Atari never bothered upgrading their hardware.

2600:6507(gimped 6502)
5200:6502
7800:6502

Seriously, what the fuck Atari?
>>
>>3015868
What should they have upgraded to?
Make the 7800 a consolized ST with a 68000 like the 5200 was a consolized 400? Switching to a Z80 seems pointless and a x86 inappropriate at the time.

They also had the XEGS which obviously had a 6502 as a consolized XE.

The 7800 had a test launch in the Summer of 1984 in California. It was supposed to launch nationwide later that year, but the Tramiels took over Atari and decided to abandon the console market and focus only on PCs. It was only after they saw how well Nintendo was doing with the NES that they decided to get back into consoles in '86,
>>
>>3015868
They lost their engineering mojo after the Warner sale. Also your argument is a bit shaky since the NES also used a 6502.
>>
>>3015892
Then I'd blame it on the poor reception of the 5200.
Sega also quickly went from the SG-1000 to the Mk3/SMS and then to the Mega Drive trying to catch up to the competition.
>>
>>3015891
This MIGHT have gone somewhere but I think US consumers had lost their faith in Atari as a console manufacturer so all it would have done was cost them respect for their computer platform. Also it would have been a real expensive console.
>>
>>3015892

Wasn't the main reason for abandoning it because of the industry crash?
>>
>>3015868
Same CPU family makes it easy on long-time developers. Also the chance for backwards compatibility, although I've never owned an Atari so I don't know if that was a thing (I'm guessing it wasn't)
>>
>>3015954
Pretty much. They focused mostly on their PC lines from there on, later releasing the 7800 and Lynx as a side-business, until they decided to abandon PCs completely in 1993 to focus on the Jaguar.

The 7800 was backwards compatible with the 2600 natively. The 5200 required an adapter to player 2600 games. Supposedly an adapter was planned for the 5200 that also supported 7800 cartridges, but I don't think it actually came out.
>>

same family, but not exactly the same processor. In car terms one is a V4 and the other is a V8

NES:6502
SNES:6502 (16 bit version)

Seriously, what the fuck Atari?
>>
What Atari machine is the best in your opinion?
>>
>>3015908
What argument? I asked why Atari never upgraded. Nintendo didn't use the 6502 in the SNES, and Sega only included the Z80 in the Genesis/MD for backwards compatiblity.

>>3015995
>same family, but not exactly the same processor.
The 6507 was a slightly gimped 6502, but the 6502C used in the 5200 is nearly identical to the 6502C used in the 7800. The difference? "Unlike a standard 6502, SALLY can be halted to allow other devices to control the bus" The 65816 is the same family, but 6502 is the same processor as a 6502. I'm not really sure why I have to explain this to anyone.

>>3016034
Yes, Nintendo used an upgraded processor like just about every other console maker, what's your point?
>>
>>3016328
Sega didn't upgrade the Z80/µPD780C for the SMS.
>>
>>3016348
In all fairness, the Mark 1 and Mark 2 were complete flops, the Mark 3 was on par with a re-release.
>>
>>3016365
>the Mark 1 and Mark 2 were complete flops
They weren't. Sega made a profit out of the SG-1000, even if it didn't make Famicom numbers.
>>
>>3016371
Both lasted for a single year. That's a flop by any standard. The SMS lasted in the US longer than that, and it was still a flop in the US.
>>
>>3016381
But it ruled Brazil.
>>
>>3015868
The 6502 was a champ. The NES used it. So did the Commodore 64 and the Apple II.

What they needed was better dedicated graphics hardware.
>>
>>3016387
I know, it was also quite popular in EU as well(and had MANY more games). Hence why I specified
>The SMS lasted in the US longer than that, and it was still a flop in the US.
>>
>>3016365
And they could have increased the clock speed for such a reboot to 6 or 8 MHz.
>>
>>3016392
Would have been nice. It's not like the B or C were incompatible.
>>
>>3016389
Wasn't the PC Engine CPU also based on the 6502?
>>
>>3015892
>Rescue on Fractalus

>>
>>3016459
yep but faster
>>
>>3016387
why shitskins think that's relevant is beyond me
>>
>>3016596
Me neither. All of the Brazil-specific SMS games are trash. Like who the hell wants to play ROM hacks of Monster World based on Monica's Gang? I barely care enough about the licensed Hudson Soft versions on PC Engine as it is.
>>
>>3016608
As someone who's played a number of BR-only SMS games, I agree. Goddamn, they are some of the worst games on the console. If you want to play through SMS games, remove BR-only games from the list or you will regret it.
>>

>Gen 5
>The N64 flopped worldwide besides USA were sold enough to not be a flop compared to the PS1
>"HURR DURR THE N64 WAS BETTER THAN THE PS1"

Only dumb american can say X is better because his country liked it, and the rest of the world dont. Fuck you fat dumbass
>>
>>3016694
The Saturn only really sold well in Japan, and that was almost enough to kill Sega. When the largest market ignores you, you suffer. So, yes, no one gives a damn about BR except BR's. The MSX sold like hotcakes in Japan, but you don't see the rest of the world really giving a shit about it, do you?
>>
>>3016726
>When the largest market ignores you, you suffer.
This. The American gaming market is more important than anyone could imagine, even for Japanese hardware manufacturers.
>>
>>3016381
The SC-3000 saw better sales than the SG-1000, while having essentially the same hardware inside. It is very likely that the SC pushed them out of the red, not the SG.

The European 7800, due to it playing 7800 games, 2600 games and having a controller that isn't a complete piece of garbage like the 5200 or American 7800 controllers.
>>
>>3017398
Even though it's just a poor mans NES controller. Sorry Atari but you just didn't have shit on Nintendo.
>>
>>3016381
>Both lasted for a single year. That's a flop by any standard.
They technically lasted two years, since the Mark II (actually the SG-1000 II) was just a redesign of the original SG-1000 with detachable joypads (instead of the Atari 5200-style joystick the original SG-1000 had). Even longer if you consider the fact that Sega was still producing SG-1000/SC-3000 software after the Mark III was launched, since the Mark III was backwards compatible with the older platforms.
>>
>>3017312
Sega's console business prior to the Mega Drive was just a side-thing anyway. They made most of their money out of arcade sales.

How the fuck did they get away with this? Seriously how the fuck? That would be like if Sony introduced the "X-Player" or some shit that let you play Xbox One games on a PS4. The lawsuits would shut Sony down forever.

Because Atari never patented their shit when Nolan Bushnell was in charge, hence why their competitors got away with cloning their hardware (there were also various Pong machines that copied Atari's version). It's one of things Nintendo tried to avoid when they introduced the NES in the US.
>>
How did Atari do in Japan during the 2600's heyday? Was it even sold there? Was it even considered by Atari? Considering how infamously shitty Microsoft consoles sell there I'm curious how it went down back then.

Atari consoles did pretty poorly in Japan.

The 2600 was actually released twice in Japan. The original VCS was released in 1979 by Epoch as the Cassette TV Game with a retail price of 57,300 yen, which was almost as much as a PS3 when it launched. Atari's own Japanese division later tried sell a redesigned version of the 2600 as the Atari 2800 in 1983, but then Nintendo came out with the Famicom a few months later and made Atari's efforts irrelevant.
>>
>>3017901
>>3017927
Aside from the TIA the VCS was made of generic parts. After the TIA was reversed there was nothing stopping hardware clones
>>
>>3017927
He didn't understand the lasting appeal of their product, or of the hardware as an investment. Hardware and software were seen as disposable assets.

Bushnell's reasoning was that the time it took to patent things, the market would have moved on, and so would imitators churning out pirate hardware from Italy and Asia. It would just be messy. This mentality appears to have lingered on into the console era.

Bushnell didn't protect the brand.

Mario Bros came out on the same day as the Famicom and was still released on other platforms.
Hudson also ported a few Famicom titles like Golf to Japanese computers.

Companies were more interested in selling games than in selling hardware.

I'm pretty sure Mario Bros. came out later. You're thinking of Donkey Kong, DK JR. and Popeye. Those were the three launch titles for the Famicom.
>>
>>3020936
Mario Bros came out as an arcade cabinet on 7月14日 but the Famicom port only came out 9月9日.
I think Nintendo stopped developing arcade titles after that due to the success of the FC and only ported stuff to arcade afterwards like the VS series.
>>
>>3020948
They did Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out in 1984 and 1985 respectively, as well as Arm Wrestling around the same period. Those were the only non-Vs. System games they did after DK3.

Oldfag here.

The reason is that the 5200 was pretty terrible. The joysticks, in particular, were garbage, but everything about it was a disappointment -- its pack-in (Super Breakout) was boring, the system was too big, it felt cheaply made, and it was too expensive.

Trying to push the 5200 a bit more wouldn't have worked, since people who had 5200s (like my older brother) tossed them in the basement or the attic.

100% correct. Although I can speak, read, and write your language and have spent many years in your country I will never be one of you. You are possibly the most xenophobic people on earth. You make the KKK look like amateurs. Not all Japanese are like you but so many are. I'd still enjoy playing your games and eating your uncooked fish even if you were all cunts.
>>
>>3018192
SNES used the 65c816, same processor as the Apple IIGS computer. It's a 16 bit descendant of the 6502.
The 6502, or some variant of it was used in the NES, Lynx, TG16, Atari 2600 (6507), Atari 5200 Apple //, and a whole bunch of other 8 bit computers of the 80s.

Atari Games is owned by Warner again.
>>
>>3022394
Yeah, I know Atari Games was bought by Midway around the early 2000's, hence why a lot of their games were in the Midway compilations on PS2 and Xbox.
