That seems like a pretty good variety.
Honorable mention goes to Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, ActRaiser 2, Vagrant Story and the King's Field series. Any of these would have a place on my top 10 list.

Nice picks, and it's good to see a fellow Zelda 2 fan. What is it that you like about it?
1. Thief: The Dark Project - my fav, pinnacle of PC gaming.
2. Super Mario: Yoshi's Island - gameplay-wise it's not as good as 3 / World, but I just adore art-direction and shittone of content.
3. Planescape: Torment - flawed gem, which is actually not quite as good as The Pathologic in both terms of writing and as artsy-fartsy game, but for a retro game it's superb.
4. Vagrant Story - clunky as fuck, unbalanced, but I love it.
5. The Last Express - true Citizen Cane of vidya.

Nostalgia plays a big part, and I grew up with a SNES. There are games on other platforms that I also like a lot: Alien Soldier, R-Type, Guardian Heroes, Blaster Master... I just like the ones I listed better.

>What is it that you like about it?
It's consistently challenging, fun to speed-run, allows for a bit of sequence-breaking, has tight combat, and despite the low-detail graphics, I really enjoy the Greco-Roman aesthetics.
As for the genre-shift, I think it was entirely appropriate. Everyone had plenty of time to master Zelda's overhead block puzzles, so making the sequel into a platforming experience was probably the only way to challenge veterans.

Apparently it is built from the same engine of links awakening, or more specifically zla was built on its engine, it looks pretty cool but was only fan translated in 2011.
I never understand these threads for two main reasons.
The first: assuming the amount of games you've played are in the double digits, and majority weren't terrible (even then), how can rate your top five in any non-emprical way (like total playtime)? Some days I feel like Mario, some days Sonic, it depends on my mood. I can't rate them higher to lower, and that's accounting for sequels.
The second: Does anyone read anyone else's list and think "Wow that sure was fascinating and insightful, it sure enriched my life to learn the preferences of some random person I'll never meet" - I mean if OP was consolidating the list to show /vr/'s general taste in games then maybe it would be interesting.

I've always treated list and 3x3 threads as disguised recommendation threads.
If someone has tastes similar to mine but listed a game or two I haven't played it gives me more incentive to try it out.

I just listed my five favourite games that I find the most fun to play. It's not like an objective list where I'm claiming these are the five greatest games ever made.

No but I skimmed through the whole thread and if there's something I find interesting or worth commenting on I'd do it, much like 3x3 threads. 3x3 threads tend to have good discussion and you get decent recommendations out of them.
