for whatever reason, some ppl prefer to use Game Ranger
i counted some 150 players on ranger, 750 on voobly
but for AoK, AoF, RoR, it seems u gotta go to ranger, vooblyans seem to only play AoC, altough there was a few on AoE1 vanilla as u can see on voobly screenshot, who would want to play aoe1 and not RoR?

you can just step1, step2, and play a zipped version, and get the background music on mp3,
i like AIMP player, u can set a global key (scroll lock, who uses that key) to play/pause, so you don't need to alt-tab from the game to play.
and finally, patch 1.4 fixes a color issue with aoe2 on windows Vista,7,8, theres no similar on aoe1, but if you close the process explorer.exe it fixes the colors, you just need to run explorer.exe after, to

You guys got it. :) Binary Patcher is a bit obtuse, but definitely works. I also altered my AI to be a bit less unconditionally hostile, among other things. Not sure if I will revert that change, though; recently played a game where a CPU kept switching from Neutral to Enemy a ridiculous number of times. Dunno if that was a bug or what.
I use 1.3 patch on AoC. I didn't appreciate having a "Watching Player" (whatever the fuck that is) shoved into my AoC main menu, and 1.4 actually never made it out of Beta.
I would not recommend the UPatchHD for RoR; the guy who makes it is a twat and fucks with balance even beyond simple bugfixes. It doesn't even function quite right on my system.

the bit about adblock is just because any pirate site, kat.cr, isozone, or whatever hoster that isozone points to, will popup a handful of popups and load some flash banners, adblock solves it.

i guess since aoe1 hasn't seen fan-made anticheat "userpatch" to play widescreen and fix colours without closing explorer.exe and playing soudns without cdrom.
when it comes they can simply grab it and relaunch aoe1 for making cash while turning their backs to their clients

There's Age of Empires: Collector's Edition that goes for around 10$. I bought a similar version years ago, though mine didn't come with AoE 2
