I have a nice Sony Trinitron and I want to use it for emulation, bad thing it only has composite but it looks good anyway. Is it possible to get 240p with an old ATI Radeon video card with TV out and soft15khz? I mainly play fighting and platform games so it's kinda like a big deal for me.

Trinitrons are nice. I've got one myself but just use it for my consoles. I'm emulating on the flatscreen these days. It's ok with the right filters and shaders.

What exactly is the difference between composite video out and RGB out, and can you hack a raspberry pi or other small arm box to for rgb instead of composite for an emulation box?

>>
>>3008667
The physical PC release can be modded to run in full HD with widescreen. It can be ran on a toaster. Also, it keeps the unlockable Game Gear titles and has mission mode built in.

The steam release used to be locked to 480p upscaled. They fixed that, but it's still not in widescreen and high resolutions causes various issues. No Game Gear games and the mission mode is DLC.

That is why I started it. Emulation with a retro focus. The perfect place to get advice on lower end devices (Pi2, PSP hacks, etc) and older emulators. You never seem to find advice on emulating systems like gamegear or Turbografx-16 over there. Yes, the answer is often retroarch. It can be a bear to configure for a noob on linux though. Retroarch is just a framework though for 40 some systems emulators you can install individually.

I don't even give a shit if it isn't pretty emulation/graphics wise.

I just want one that I don't have to fucking google "How to use _____" to use it.

Demu has the worst sound.

Also no, unless you have a monster truck PC the sound will always be messed up.

See the demul dev programmed demul with fucking MANDATORY sound warping whenever even a single frame is dropped and there's NO WAY to turn it off as far as my knowledge goes.

So if the sound bothers you you may as well try another emulator.

That is fucking stupid though that it has automatic sound warping.

Can anybody help me with SST?

I am trying to play a bin. of Panzer Dragoon and it works fine but I am not getting any music at all.

I heard some things about having to burn the bin and cue to a blank cd and then playing that on the emulator. Haven't tested it and it seems pretty stupid.

Is it the rip I downloaded thats fucked or am I doing something wrong.
>>
>>3016185
If you're only using the bin you won't get any CDDA audio. The .cue contains all the audio offsets. Mount it with any disc emulation software (DaemonTools, Alcohol, WinCDemu, etc).

SSF doesn't load isos directly, so you have to use a real disc or aforementioned disc mounting software and you've already realized it, but you can safely ignore anyone that tells you to burn anything.
>>
>>3016204

Oh, Virtual Clone Drive is giving me errors when I mount the cue.

Maybe I need to try a different disc emulation software.
>>
>>3016207
Try Daemon Tools Lite. Works for me for anything and everything, mounts .cue no problems.
>>
>>3016207
afaik Daemon Tools is the only thing that works with SSF, which sucks because DT spies on you and tries to install malware.

I've gotten the original Rush to work in the current version of MAME. However, The Rock still doesn't work. It's not listed as a child of the original, and it has maybe the most bullshit issue ever: it has virtually no sound/visual issues, and it lets you play all the way up to the transmission select. And then the transmission menu loops forever and never goes to the race. I was so livid when I saw that.

I haven't emulated anything except Silent Hill 1 and that was... 8 years ago.

I wanted to play R4 but when I extracted it it just gave me a bunch of bin files *how do I get the iso* and psxe 1.6 started throwing up errors before I even loaded anything.

>>
>>3026393
Get RetroArch and use Mednafen. It just werks for 99% of games, and you should be able to run it with x2 resolution.

Proper dumps of PS1 games come as one or more bin files and a cue. The cue points to all the bins, so you keep them in the same directory and load the cue.

If you really want muh HD, then I would suggest PCSXR over ePSXe. It takes more set up, but it has better sound, a much nicer controller plugin, and is able to do resolutions over 960p.

You should check out the wiki in the OP btw.

>No, please don't use ePSXe. It's harmful to emulation and your freedoms and it's not even good.

Is it normal for Bettle under RetroArch to drop the framerate to a crawl if I increase the res to anything higher than 2x? Maybe there is a something to be done about it. I'm running it on Linux.

Retroarch mednafen psx with 2x resolution sucks because it pixelates prerendered background and fmvs which looks really really really ugly. There is no option for filtering. epsx does the job. The n64 has it's own texture filtering integrated into the console. I'm Retro arch you can leave it at automatic which simulates what the n64 actually does or switch manually between 3point, neatest neighbour and bilinear. That is sweet. If an option switch for bilinear or even bicubic texture filtering is added to mednafen psx up scaling I will definitely check it out again and experiment with the higher resolution. Maybe this will be added in the next core update of the nightly? Until then I'm sticking to native resolution.
>>
>>3028906
Yeah, we all saw the thread and no-one cared. Go bug the RA devs instead of wasting everybody's time here.
>>
>>3026403
>still recommending pcsx-r after epsx 2.0
top kek. just use epsx 2.0. it just werks. it only has one plugin now. but I'd still prefer mednafen. only use epsx if you want HD.
>>
>>3028910
I'm glad to waste your time. I will continue.
>>
>>3028914
That wasn't a putdown, I'm legitimately trying to help you. You explained your problem in that thread you made and other than a few people chiming in with their opinions it got nowhere. Now you're projecting into this thread which isn't going to help either because no-one here is capable of helping you with your niche demand. Seriously, go file a feature request on RA's github or bug the person or people who added the upscaling to the core because they will probably be able to either assist you with finding a solution or implement something for you. You're in the minority with wanting blurry textures desu. A lot of emulation autists really like integer scaling and blockiness.
>>
>>3028927
Aah okay it wasn't a put down. maybe you should work on your wording lol . like that no one will listen to you. but it's true I will do that eventually and file a feature request. still I want to know what other people think in here. Let's see what other people have to say. I'm sorry if it bothers you.
>>
>>3028927
I don't you can generalise that most people want blocky textures. I think this is game depended. That's why a switch option would be helpful. No one wants pixel ated photorealistic background and fmvs. Have you ever seen someone upscale photographs or dvds with nearest neighbour? no one does that! not even autists! the nearest neighbour up scaling is useful though for menus and for example full 3d games like some fighting titles or crash bandicoot. There it doesn't bother. Still could look nice though. It's matter of taste, really. Except for fmvs and photorealistic prerendered backgrounds. The only reason why to keep pixelated backgrounds is if you had a filter that blurs the backgrounds and the models homogenicly together. Unfiltered both pixelated and smooth backgrounds don't merge and stick out from the 3d models, but it's easier to filter the smooth backgrounds into a homogenic image in my opinion.
>>
>>3028934
>no-one cares

I can see why that could have been interpreted negatively, but it's true. The other thread didn't exactly get a lot of attention and I think most people were struggling to notice a difference between those comparison images.

Thinking of how scaling works in games that don't have any 3D leads me to wonder if a pure shader solution would work? The only reason I can think of where it wouldn't would be if you wanted the shader applied solely to non-3D elements. The main reason behind the upscaling is more polys anyway, so applying a shader to the rendered image wouldn't change that.
>>
I had to apply a bicubic b-spline gaussian-like filter for it to look good to me. If the textures were prefiltered you could just apply a simple bicubic mitchell filter to the image and it would be a lot sharper.

It's a software renderer, so that would be really slow. Maybe you could autodetect mdecs and switch back to x1 so whatever shader you're using will take over, but it wouldn't really be worth the effort if you ask me.

Just wait for Rustation. It will save PS1 emulation. Increased IR in mednafen-libretro is just from Simias experimenting anyway.

RetroArch's PSX Mednafen core has overclocking that completely removes the game's slowdown.
>>
>>3032119
That only works for a handful of games. In most games it does nothing because frame rates are locked or it speeds up music which is the same ffw. It correctly only works in a handful of games.
>>
>>3032135

It works for SotN, and that's my favorite PS1 game ever.

I believe it's not true CPU overclocking but removing bottlenecks. So it varies from game to game.

It's one of the most popular. And as far as I know, only the Xbox has zero slowdowns. The PSP verison has some as well.

Also overclocking has a big impact on the games I and others have tested.

So you're saying it removes that awesome part where the orb forms and comes down in slow motion?

I don't want that. Who wants that? That slowdown is probably 100% intentional.
>>
>>3032201

SotN has slowdown all over the place when there's too many things on screen. The Potion slowdown is not intentional at all. They probably just couldn't get rid of it.

Try playing the fight against that big egyptian guy. Or use mist in a room with a lot of enemies. Slowdown city.

This removes that for 60fps all over.

They probably didn't think it mattered there. But it's in a lot of other parts of the game too. This removes ALL the lag and keeps it 60fps everywhere.

Bios and cuesheets. It's always those two things.

Check your cuesheet and files. For instance, the one that comes with the pre-patched JP translated version of SOTN on emuparadise has wrong file names, .ecm compression. You have to clean it all up and ensure the file names match.

Next the bios. It only likes 3 bios. Use these. Place in System folder.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/7d5tbargr0iq2x8/RetroArch+BIOS.zip

Also recommend setting the CPU Overclock on, as it removes all slowdown in the game. And maybe try some CRT shaders while you're there.

>replay

If you're on a replay check out the PSP version, the JP PS1 version, or Saturn. Always nice for some variety.

I'm playing Zelda 2 nestopa core with save states and they get randomly corrupted. I tried another rom dump, a new nightly core, a different core - the fceum one..but all with the same outcome. I'm looking for a strategy PC game.

I remember it wasn't like most strategy games, because the units followed predetermined paths towards several points in the map and the fight was all about controlling those points.

The theme was futuristic, the units were tanks and shit like that.

It had maps with snow, barren wasteland and I don't remember more.

The view is isometric.

This game os from the 90's or very early 2000's.
>>
>>3034836
Your probably thinking of red alert or a later release. It's free to download and play. Later versions were better. http://redalert1.com/ I wouldn't bother with it though. There's a cooler game that's free you can download that has better game mechanics. https://sourceforge.net/projects/warzone2100/

Warzone 2100 is like red alert only better.
>>
>>3034860
No, no. The units weren't free to roam, they followed predetermined paths once the building was done creating them.
Which is like a mix of tower defense with strategy, really.
>>
>>3034836

>>

>>

>>
>>3034026

>>
>>3034891
There was a map, like a strategy game.
You started with one or two production/resource buildings and from them you could pump out tanks and other sci-fi track and/or wheeled vehicles.

With the resources you could buy units, build vehicles or invest in technology (pretty standard I know).

The units, when completed, got out of the buildings and went along predetermined paths in the map. This "trails" had sites where you could build more buildings or defenses against the enemy forces, effectively creating many chokepoints along the map that you and your enemy had to advance through with sheer number of forces or strong units.

The theme was sci-fi, with various terrains like snowy plains, hills, wastelands, etc.

As for graphics, it seemed like isometric sprites on the field, with each unit able to move in 8 directions (with 8 sprites for each unit). The buildings exploded when destroyed.
Seemed like a late 90's/early 00's game.

I remember one of the best units to have was a tank that launched 4 rockets.

One side was blue (I don't remember which one).

Oh, and there was a female voice giving you information sometimes. The story was pretty sparse, and I don't remember any of it.

I'm about 10 hours into a certain snes game (which will remain unnamed to avoid spoilers) and I'm playing on zsnes.

The problem is that whenever I restart my computer (Upgraded to Windows 10 last week; not sure if relevant) and try to load the in-game save file (not save state), it keeps opening a save I made about 3 hours into the game.

I've restarted my computer two times since I started playing. The first time, I loaded the save file from an external device (My thinking was that the operating system was somehow fucking it up) and there were no problems. That would mean a tiny ass 320x240 window. No thanks. I want full screen.

CRTs are great because they can display low resolution content sharply at full screen. LCDs can't do that. Shaders try to replicate that. You need 4K or more though to do it right.
