What does /vr/ think of hqx filters? Which games do you use them with? Which games look terrible with them?
Not for me
None
All of them
>>2995903
Filters were cool when emulating was still in its infancy. Now they are just eyesores.
>using filters ever
Absolutely disgusting
>incoming 200 images with RetroArch filenames
These threads are just an excuse for autists and shills to wallow in their own cancer
Remember to click the minus button next to OP's post
Yucky, they look bad.
I prefer EPX because it's subtle and makes 240p games look convincingly like 480p.
But there's no great pixel art filter. Neither EPX, HQ nor anything else can handle the helicopter blades in this pic.
I just don't care anymore, but I used to like filters.
>>2996040
Out of all the games in my SNES emu library, earthbound was the only one that looked acceptable, and even then it was only when the game wasn't fullscreen.
>>2995940
That looks like Peach is pleasing herself and moaning in ecstasy.
THE WAY IT'S MEANT TO BE PLAYED
Hate filters but I love a little scanlineage.
>>2996040
This is the first comparison I've seen applying any filter (discounting scanlines at least) where the filtered image did not look like complete and utter garbage to me.
I personally still prefer the left here (maybe that's just what I'm used to seeing), but I can legitimately understand why someone might prefer the right.
>>2995903
>What does /vr/ think of hqx filters?
Absolutely disgusting desu
>>2996040
i liked image on the right but am usually a scanlines kind of guy so I made this just out of curiosity. make of it what you will
>>2995981
>using filters ever
>Absolutely disgusting
I think some levels, gamma and saturation adjustment can be pretty good anon. Depends on the monitor and such.
>>2996145
>scanline filters
worse than hqx desu
>>2996030
Note that this shows non-integer ratio nearest neighbor, so it is much uglier than it should be.
>>2996219
To be fair though I had to look at the energy bar just to see it. Mind you it was hard with the image cycling.
>>2996227
IMO it's most obvious on the diagonal thing.
>>2996030
WOW, that actually looks really convincing. I use a filter just like that for kega fusion.
>>2996145
I use a crt but I hate scanline filters.
Scanlines on a tv help make a crappy analog signal look sharper, but on an emulator it's as sharp as it can ever be. It serves no purpose besides to make the image dark.
I don't like it when a filter causes ANY element to not look like the shape it was trying to convey. xBR and such can provide good guesses at actual shapes in an already decent-res image but their guesses in lower-res images unavoidably have errors. 2D PSX images and up can benefit pretty well IMO.
The only thing that makes me truly sad are fucked-up aspect ratios, especially with Nearest scaling, causing everything from letters to shapes to look awful due to wildly varying pixel sizes. There are literally people on /vr/ right now playing their games like pic related.
Scanlines that are not trying to faithfully replicate an old display (ie most of the simple scanline filters that you'd see in a basic standalone emu) are pretty embarrassing I guess but they don't make me feel like the game's artwork is being misrepresented to an unaware player at least.
>>2995903
ugly as fucking shit
all the upscaling cartoony ones are so ugly with literally any and every game you throw at it
i do like ntsc, lcd, etc. filters doe
Only thing that bothers me are people who use Nearest scaler while proclaiming that all scalers are wrong, as if theirs wasn't one.
I would kill to see a N64 game with xBRZ filtering. That would definitely be something.
I only use proprietary vectorising filters
Needs 16GB of RAM and a minimum of 3GHz processor but it's worth it
Smoothing filters look like shit. Better off using CRT shaders, preferably at 4k.
muh cycle accurate 4ghz quadcore 8k upscaled crt filter for maximum accuracy
also make sure you sync the video output to 240fps on retroarch otherwise anything lower than that will break vertical synchronize and cause screen tearings
>>2996219
How many times are you going to post this image?
>>2997331
>lmao
You're the most easily recognizable shitposter on /vr/. Try changing it up a bit to hide your identity. Maybe then someone will be able to take you seriously.
>>2997340
omg some knows how to search a keyword on the archive. i don't know how im going to live normally now that my identity has been compromised
ugly. played with a few and went back to native.
waifu2x filter when?
>>2995903
Mfw filter is turned on in an xbla game.
>>2997331
m8 it was a joke
is there anyway to do low-level filtering on certain layers? maybe >>2996040 with the background filtered but sprite foreground models would look cool
I only use bicubic for 3d games and crt hyllian for 2d games.
>>2997375
Looks like you've got the wrong aspect ratio
>filters
>>2997385
nope, it's 4:3 like on the real console
>>2996018
I came here just to see this image
>>2995903
I use them a lot. I like them. Mainly because everything looks a jagged fucking mess on a 55' TV. You can stick scanlines up your ass. I have never, ever seen a scanlines filter even remotely resemble an old tv's output. This coming from a guy that played his snes exclusively though a TV made in 1980. Go fuck yourselves. Seriously. You cunts have no idea. Enjoy your lines faggots. I'm enjoying my retro in crisp as fuck HD.
>>2997472
>I use them a lot.
>I'm enjoying my retro in crisp as fuck HD.
So do you or don't you use filters?
>>2997336
I'll stop when people learn to scale correctly.
>>2997483
If only every sprite could be redrawn by hand.
>>2997472
>crisp as fuck
Ironically, nearest neighbor alone doesn't produce the sharpest image.

>implying scanlines add sharpness
Obvious scanlines are an ugly side effect of the hack used to display 240p on a 480i display.
>>2997586
Thanks Bro
I'll post the full version when it's done
>>2997703
What am I seeing here?
I'll use some really basic bilinear filters in some cases but that's it.
I'll never get the appeal of scanline filters when they usually just slap a bunch of dark lines over the image instead of actually simulating a CRT.
>>2997745
Donut plains
>>2995903
They're not accurate enough and they suck if they're not being applied per layer. When it's applied over the entire screen they have heavy artifacting against some backgrounds. While they round some things out which can look nice they distort things that shouldn't.
I stick to bilinear scanline/CRT if possible. Also, anyone intentionally using raw that's not putting out to a PAL/NTSC TV is an asshole.

This guy has the right idea.
>>2996018
>>2996014
Only good filters.
>>2997921
>>2997921
That's ugly and degenerate.
>>2997925
Make a filter that moves the game screen around like a shaky video on YouTube.
>>2997949
Jokes on you. Bottom is from original hardware.
>>2997921
Is there a filter that simulates the lacking backlight and ghosting?
>>2997309
Is this for real?
>>2997921
Dunno, I like this one but I haven't tinkered much with GB/GBC filters.
>>2995981
Why are you so upset?
>>2998057
Someone might mention RetroArch and that triggers him greatly.
>>2995903
They're mostly shit. But when emulating gameboy on 3DS i noticed that filters like this actually look quite good with low magnification.
>>2997327
This is the kind of thing I would use for emulation if anything.
>>2995981
>incoming 200 images with RetroArch filenames
The only reason I'm in this thread is to see dozens of filter comparisons I can autistically pour over. Get to it, /vr/.

Okay but fact is no one looks at his gameboy screen with a magnifying glass or an camera macro lens. besides your filter still looks worse. it's fake. fail
>>2999271
you are not really good in mathematics eh?

Get your eyes tested, you need glasses. 240p scanlines are clearly visible at normal screen sizes and viewing distances.
>>2999668
>Okay but fact is no one looks at his gameboy screen with a magnifying glass
hahahaha what?
Holy shit you were definitely not alive during that time period if you didn't know about this shit. Like at least 1/4 people with a Gameboy had some form of magnifying glasses strapped to the fucking. Holy fucking retard. Wow.
>>3001190
Also here's another. With a review of similar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sgw8TSCRG_E
Also, not all of us were blind and lacked glasses. If you had good vision and lighting you'd see it like that while playing anyway.
>>3001319
Dude, chill. When I was a kid and played a lot of the original gameboy in the dark, a magnifier was crazy useful. Not all the extra bullshit that guy has, but the magnifier, sure. that and a small light source made playing at night a possibility.
No hate, just consider something for a sec. What was your first handheld? Was the screen backlit?
>>3001325
i had a fat red gameboy. today i rather play on a psp or on linux without ugly filters. but i still have that brick here in my room.

>>2997375
only acceptable filter. Even if its not perfect, at least the entire screen isnt a smudgy piece of shit.
>>3003391
What's the point? Everything is too clear unlike a real CRT TV.
The only thing you gain is no input lag
>>2995903
Say no to filters! 1 of 5 kids use filtering. Be smart and dont do that.
Most filters I hate, some I enjoy for certain games but if other people want to use filters, that's fine, it doesn't affect me.
>>2997375
>That slight screen tilt
Always triggers me
Most scanline filters I see people using are really shit. I spent like an entire day trying to make one that didn't look too bad. I think it's alright and sort of looks like a real CRT screen.
>>3003667

Your opinion on what filters are shit is irrelevant.
