What does /vr/ think of hqx filters? Which games do you use them with? Which games look terrible with them?

I prefer EPX because it's subtle and makes 240p games look convincingly like 480p.

But there's no great pixel art filter. Neither EPX, HQ nor anything else can handle the helicopter blades in this pic.

This is the first comparison I've seen applying any filter (discounting scanlines at least) where the filtered image did not look like complete and utter garbage to me.

I personally still prefer the left here (maybe that's just what I'm used to seeing), but I can legitimately understand why someone might prefer the right.

I use a crt but I hate scanline filters.

Scanlines on a tv help make a crappy analog signal look sharper, but on an emulator it's as sharp as it can ever be. It serves no purpose besides to make the image dark.

I don't like it when a filter causes ANY element to not look like the shape it was trying to convey. xBR and such can provide good guesses at actual shapes in an already decent-res image but their guesses in lower-res images unavoidably have errors. 2D PSX images and up can benefit pretty well IMO.

The only thing that makes me truly sad are fucked-up aspect ratios, especially with Nearest scaling, causing everything from letters to shapes to look awful due to wildly varying pixel sizes. There are literally people on /vr/ right now playing their games like pic related.

Scanlines that are not trying to faithfully replicate an old display (ie most of the simple scanline filters that you'd see in a basic standalone emu) are pretty embarrassing I guess but they don't make me feel like the game's artwork is being misrepresented to an unaware player at least.

I use them a lot. I like them. Mainly because everything looks a jagged fucking mess on a 55' TV. You can stick scanlines up your ass. I have never, ever seen a scanlines filter even remotely resemble an old tv's output. This coming from a guy that played his snes exclusively though a TV made in 1980. Go fuck yourselves. Seriously. You cunts have no idea. Enjoy your lines faggots. I'm enjoying my retro in crisp as fuck HD.

I'll use some really basic bilinear filters in some cases but that's it.
I'll never get the appeal of scanline filters when they usually just slap a bunch of dark lines over the image instead of actually simulating a CRT.
>>
>>2997745
Donut plains
>>
>>2995903
They're not accurate enough and they suck if they're not being applied per layer. When it's applied over the entire screen they have heavy artifacting against some backgrounds. While they round some things out which can look nice they distort things that shouldn't.

I stick to bilinear scanline/CRT if possible. Also, anyone intentionally using raw that's not putting out to a PAL/NTSC TV is an asshole.
