American marketing for the SM was handled by Tonka, rather than Sega themselves. Tonka of course, had no fucking idea what to do with a video game console and ultimately drove the system's US release into the fucking ground with their awful decisions, the formula cover art being one of the largest.

Should I buy a Master System for $60? Also, what games are a must own and how much are they usually?
>>

>Should I buy a Master System for $60?
YES!

>Also, what games are a must own and how much are they usually?
Get a flashcart... Wonderboy III, Zillion, Golden Ax Warrior and Lord of the Sword are good to start with.
>>
>>2993789
It took me a long time to figure out that the early Genesis games did the reverse
>>
>>2994142
Are flash carts easy to obtain? Either way, I'd rather get physical games unless they're REALLY expensive (which is where the flashcart would probably come into play).

Yes.

Must own for me are Alex Kidd in shinobi land, wonderboy 1 and 3, sonic 2 and triple trouble, outrun, shinobi and maybe castle of illusion (fantastic port)
>>
>>2993772
Wow, after all these years I realise. That's not a magnifying glass, it's a rear view mirror on your bike. Never spotted it until right now.
>>
>>2994149
If you have a Mega Drive you might as well just get a flashcart for that. It can play Master System games. No point to a MS-specific flashcart unless it's for a Japanese MS with FM sound.
>>
>>2994162
Oh wow, that image is a less retarded now.
>>
>>2994162
Fuck! You're right I feel like an idiot
>>
>>2994167
I still would really like to own a MS, though. I'm getting a lot from tax returns, so it's all good.
>>
>>2994167
The mark 1 also has peripheral support that the megadrive doesn't though. If it is a model 2 don't bother thoughm thing doesnt even have rgb out without a mod.

Something about the SMS in general just rubs me the wrong way. It makes it really hard to enjoy. Something to do with the sound and visuals. It's just janky as hell in every possible way compared to the NES.

Funny because the SMS was technically way more impressive than the NES.

It's just a matter of accustoming.

>Funny because the SMS was technically way more impressive than the NES.
Agreed. That said the sound chip still leaves a lot to be desired, though few composers were able to optimize it well.

To be fair, the whole in-game graphics and some of the mechanics were changed for the non-japanese version (removing all Fist of the North Star stuff)

The sounds chip on the SMS wasn't too bad, but the FM Synth on the Sega Mark III was totally awesome.

I wonder why they got rid of that for the west, must've been expensive to make.
>>
At least with Master System games, you never got fooled into buying a shitty game by an awesome and misleading cover.

And don't tell me you never did that anyway, assholes, if you were a kid, your buying decisions were never based on logic or reason.

>>2994697
Good point actually. With the MS boxart you would always be pleasantly surprised if the game turned out halfway decent.

Master Systems are still dirt cheap in Europe. Model IIs cost less and are far more common than Is though. You can typically find a Model II with Alex Kidd built in for cheaper than the Alex Kidd cart itself.
>>
>>2994917
I never had a master system as a child, so I never made the connection.

The Mark III didn't have FM, but the jap Master System did. The japanese Master System released AFTER the US Master System.

Why is your thread so god-awful and beta.

Boo hoo betas. Always whining with their hate speech.

Oy, Vey, Goyim, I hate 2D games. Let's make them look bad and celebrate the best of the worst, Goyim.

Damn, too bad no-one else got R-Type. You fucking SMS bastards.

And they got Darius. Those fuckers.

Covers don't look bad to me.
