What old ass racing games do you like?

I love me some Rally 2000, the old Colin Mcrae Games, Gran Turismo etc.

BAR is one of my favorite racing games on N64.
Many of the available kart racing games like Mario Kart, CTR, and DKR are also good.
Gran Turismo 2 is fucking gold.
F-Zero games are also among some of my favorites.
Wave Race 64 is a classic.
I'm probably forgetting a bunch but those are the ones I can recall at the moment.

F-Zero X isn't just my favorite "retro racer", its arguably my favorite game, so that obviously gets the nod.

Recently I've been playing Sega's Power Drift. I love the 2d-3d effect and the music and graphics are great. Its really fun even though the 5th tracks are often infuriating. Also lapping opponents on the final stretch is actually a huge hazard and equally infuriating when you lose position because you hit someone you lapped. I like how the action and music are continuous so you can just chill with no interruption in the gameplay.

That's Ferrari F355 Challenge.

DC version surely looks very nice, but the arcade version is really charming. Pic related doesn't show it, but there isn't many Racing games that offer both clutch pedal+H-shaped gear stick and paddle shift. Oh, and a very smooth framerate on three monitors too.
>>
>>2977803
>Oh, and a very smooth framerate on three monitors too
No big deal on the arcade. Probably distinct hardware driving each.

I could never play with these big black lines between the screens, so multi screen setups don't wow me at all.
>>
>>2977803
Ok, how's dreamcast emulation nowadays?
Is there any native windows port?
>>
>>2977809
nullDC? Anything I tried with it worked fine. Didn't try much with it though
>>
>>2977808
>>No big deal on the arcade. Probably distinct hardware driving each.

You bet it. The arcade kit is a monster with one Naomi board for every monitor linked by a fourth one.

I used to dislike the borders between screens, but the game does a good job on bezel compensation, you start to take them into consideration and concentrate solely on the screens after a while, pretty much like the blind spots on real cars.
>>
>>2977840
any idea how well the DC version survived the porting? Is the limited screen space an issue? Are the physics or models altered?
>>
>>2977849
I'll be frank with you. I've only played the Dreamcast version with a proper steering wheel just once. The game itself holds really well, feels pretty much like the arcade linked version (which lacks the three-monitor setup and the H gear shift). But the lack of a proper force feedback and the steering wheel itself not being sturdy enough do hurt the experience.
>>
Rush 2 is amazing and was the best game in the genre until I played Burnout Paradise (it's still #2).
>>
>>2977974
Play the PS2 port which has actual wheel support instead.
>>
>>2978041
I have no actual wheel, or ps2 emulator, so that'd make the choice easy. That said though, that people recommend wheels so strongly suggests it's not gonna fly on a gamepad, so I'm probably better off passing it altogether

>Was AM2 behind this game? I want to own one someday.

Yup, Yu Suzuki himself offered data from his own F355 to help recreating the driving experience to the game.
Some people may find its visuals a bit on the boring side. Sure, the game isn't as flashy or colorful as say, Daytona 2 or Scud Race, but the steering in this game is simply incredible, it's on its own league. If only it had a tilting seat to simulate a bit of the G-Force, it'd be perfect.

If you want to own one of these deluxe cabinets, be aware that the paper rolls/print used for the Time Trial/Telemetry mode isn't available anymore. If you happen to find a used cabinet with the printer still working/paper roll, consider yourself lucky. It was a curious addition to an already luxurious product, but not really needed anyway.
>>
>>2978895
You get a receipt for your best lap times? That's fucking hilarious and genius. I don't know much about the state of arcades but I thought plugging in your own USB controller and player cards holding player data and customization were already pretty cool.

>F-Zero X isn't just my favorite "retro racer", its arguably my favorite game, so that obviously gets the nod.
It's always been my favourite racing game. Even before it existed. When it came out I just felt this was the racing game I was born to play. This was the experience I was looking for, tantalisingly hinted in its predecessor - now fully realised.

I remember being 11, playing it in a demo pod in Boots (of all places). I already had a SNES and I heard of this game. Thought it looked cool on that poster you got with the SNES. When I played it, I really liked it. There was nothing quite like it for the time.

Then I got it for my 12th birthday and it was my pride and joy for a long time. The sequel came out a few years later on the N64 and it really seemed to have nailed the experience.

The GC version - really seemed to drop the ball. I'd have been happy with the F Zero X engine given a makeover with new tracks. Something about it didn't feel right though. It felt diluted.
>>
>>2982278
Definitely agree with you regarding GX. If you want to play GX for sick times then mechanically the game turns a whole lot more "digital" than X, IMO. Finding a good line and executing it with perfect control over nuanced physics is what I like; GX has that but it becomes too muddled with all the extraneous shit you have to perfect.

The only one I could think of that has that is one of the Battle Gear Games, but the one I really know doesn't count as Retro. Game's pretty fucking good though. And it's a bit of a shame the F355 Challenge cabs we had here didn't have the clutch/h-shifters (they only had the 2-player regular on with probably sequential shifters but had buttons to turn off the driving assists).

Rollcage (flip cars), Xtreme G (motorbikes), Killer Loop (magnetic tripods), Dethkarz (cars), have at it.
>>
>>2985981
Rollcage and Xtreme G have been posted already, so I'll skip those.
Killer Loop is interesting, because the magnet feature and gravity play a big role. You can stick your craft to the track at the press of a button, but it requires some energy. The tracks have all kinds of possible and impossible twists. As a pilot you got to learn when to use, and especially when not to use your magnet. You want it on when you're doing a "downwards" turn (think outside of a loop), or you simply fly off the track, you want it on when you go straight up, or upside down. You do not want the magnet when you're going down a track, because gravity accelerates you faster than your engine. To add a literal twist to it, one of the tracks is on a space station. Gravity won't be "down", it'll point away from the center of the station (centripedal force). When playing that game you really develop an odd sixth sense for where "up" is, how the track twists in space. Quite fun. On top of all that, the rumbling of the huge steel bearings of your pod on the metal track sounds damn cool, and the game is nicely fast.

Dethkarz is a bit so-so. The game's nothing exceptional or noteworthy, but it also does very little wrong. You got a nice tiered car system, good weaponry, entertaining tracks. It ain't wipEout, but it surely ain't shit either.

Mobil 1 rally was awesome. Graphics were great for the time, almost photorealistic, they did a great job in conveying the look of the english countryside.

Handling model was ok, not hard to master even then, not the most complex, but decent enough.

Where this game was and still is a few notches above the other is how it made you feel that it wasn't just you against other drivers, but you against the nature too.

Pushing too hard on a stage and finding yourself with too much things to repair for the time that was allotted, finding yourself on a night stage with faulty lights or even worse broken was a great experience.

You were constantly going easy, trying not to fuck up the car even more and push towards the next Service station, you were forced to thought out what you were going to fix and god, was it satisfying to pull off a win with a half-broken car.

Well, if I wouldn't restart any rally, because that was the way I used to do it. But when it came to UK and Kenya night stage I just couldn't somehow play with a calm mind. Ford Racing Puma was awesome, but I always had to use a default car. I loved Subaru Impreza and even though I don't have drivers licence and don't have a thing for cars, Impreza is a bit special to me ever since
>>
>>2986835
Never played 1. How does it compare to 2.0? Are the tracks as good? Hows the handling?

it's like 2.0 with a bit less content, and maybe slightly more difficult, at least Expert mode

stages are quite good but short (2-4 minutes)

it looks like 2.0 with a bit lower resolution and polycount
it sounds almost the same
it handles very similarly, maybe a bit less grippy than 2.0

doesn't have an "arcade" mode like 2.0 where you do laps with a pack of cars, but it has a rally school feature instead

You cannot be serious... Real cars in real life have them. They're called A-pillars.

A-pillars are not exactly vertical, and tend to not be equally distant from the driver seat, on a two seater. And I can move my head to see past them
>>
>>2988981

Not him but if the game is compatible with the DFGT it'd a better experience than using DC wheel

Man it look really the same. The camera is the same after the race and I love those shots. I don't think many people carred for Arcade mode, the Rally is where it's at. I wonder how well I'm gonna do... You got me into download a ROM now... so might as well start up my Subaru again (I hope there is in 1.0 at the start)

It reminds me in CMR 2.0 you could do that FPS mode and we always did with brother to make it harder. The appeal and effect it had on me as a kid in 2001 was unbelievable. Racing games are one of the highest quality games you can get and even in shitty ones you will still have so much fun

Is racing the genre that benifits the more from 3D?
Even back then, 2D felt off.
>>
>>2989341
DC wheels are terrible. Deal.
>>
>>2992114
what do you mean by "the genre"?
There are a lot of genres that outright require 3D visuals, while others actually require 2D visuals. And then there's a whole load of genres that fall in between. There's no "benefitting".
>>
>>2988990

probably forgetting a few but had fun with these
>>
>>2992143
He probably means "benefits the most".
>>
>>2992239
and it makes no sense, still. top down racers do not benefit from 3D visuals, or very little (death rally, gta). Their genre relies on being two dimensionsal. 3rd person or 1st person racing games used 3D visuals since day one (pole position, may not be the first, but certainly well known and early), even if they did not use polygons for that. Different genres have different visuals, and there is no benefitting in either direction
>>
>>2992239
>>2992247
I'm quite confident first person shooters or something like that benefit the most from (textured polygonal or raycast) 3D visuals, what with the whole genre relying on them.
>>
>>2992198
Yup, you forgot Crash Team Racing and Colin McRae Rally

Yeh the textures are fantastic in the shot.

A good texture a good sample is more important than the resolution.

Some games are good in 2D, some are pretty forgettable. The same happens with 3D titles though. Super Monaco GP on arcade is an awesome game which probably would be generic shit if it was made in 3D, specially really early 3D games which suffers with non-analog input support and choppy framerate. Football games are the ones that worked better in 3D IMO, which doesn't mean there weren't titles in this genre that aren't incredible like Super Sidekicks series, ISS, J-League Final Stage and probably eurobros will fondly remember of Sensible Soccer series.

Somehow it seems like 2D racers should be totally outclassed by newer 3D games in every way, but fun is fun.

Hey everybody download Canonball and lets make a custom track in the editor! We can have a theme, or just put swastikas and dicks everywhere!
>>
>>3003782
I'm not sure what "couldn't figure shit out means"? Game runs fine here.
>>
>>3003892
cannonball is a 3D racer. You got a vanishing point, objects becoming smaller with distance and a clearly horizontally facing camera. Polygons mean nothing.
