You can really hear the composer didn't master the soundchip. It could't naturally produce deep/low notes, but with some tricks it was possible. Guess who found these tricks, Alberto Gonzalez. Best composer on the Game Gear. But I'm surprised how good the Sonic music sounds without it.

Personally I don't really dig this kind of stuff. While it's true that technically it's advanced, it actually hurts the overall music to me in terms of composition. Probably because it's made for the sake being technical (or simply because of it).

No. No, it absolutely doesn't. It utterly well made, technically and compositionalwise. No Japanese composer ever put anything nearly as good out on the SMS/SGG. Your just nostalgic for Sonic, which is an utterly average composition. Like most of the stuff posted in hear, really.
I don't know why you Americans always get so butthurt, when you have to face the truth that Japanese composers aren't as talented as Europeans.
If you really want to hear something that is style over substance, look into Stello Doussis.

These are such average fucking compositions from composers who barely understood the GB. You can really hear that this was made for the NES and would've been way better off with some samples. They don't utilize the amazing wave channel at all. It's weak and average.
Best Japanese music on the GB got to be SML1, Pokemon Red/Blue and Nintendo World Cup. Pokemon rarely uses the noise channel and it's still good.

He/she/it or you claimed the composition would suffer from the technical expertise, which is not just not true, but also an objective assessment of the music and I was arguing that.
It just annoys me greatly when someone brushes off good music because "hurdur music". Most people only judge chiptune by its nostalgic value to them and nothing more.

I thought the NES and GB had the same soundchip. Do they not?
>>
>>2966478
No, the gb/c just devotes a few pins from the processor to audio, with a dac and some passives.

Not strictly a sound chip, but it still sounds great.
>>
>>2965250
Arpeggios were used due to the hardware only actually being able to output a note at a time - was a shifty way of getting a constant sound going with some very small, slightly noticable breaks. Combine that with the percussion and rhythm layers and you've got a heck of a complex thing going on.

Jonne Valtonen and Aleksi Eeben did an awesome job on "Project S-11". They utilize the GB soundchip in odd ways and produce a very unusual sound. The sound files are 467 kB large btw, many times that of most other games.

>>2966478
In terms of pure chiptune, very similar. Each have two puls channels and a noise channel. The fourth channel on the NES is a triangle wave and on the GB/C a freely controllable wave channel, which allows for more C64 like stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8H_gONEp2I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boCgMcSCXlI

>>2966503
It's rather amusing that so many people on this board hate arpeggios, but someone will always post Robocop's title theme, which is also one of the most viewed GB tracks and many people think Tim Follin is the god of chiptune, though his compositions are the best example of arpeggio abuse. Even he things his chiptune compositions are a mess. His 16-bit work is way better, be it on Genesis or SNES.
>>

The final boss was across the water.
>>
>>2966609
I don't really think so. Gonzalez definitely sounds distinctively European, due to his use of arpeggios and those were common on the C64, but that's a technique that could be used on any system. The sawtooth wave is some typical C64 sound, since the NES couldn't do it.
And Gonzalez was a Speccy artist anyway.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMqODENcp9o
>>
>>2966821
So why do GBC and GB audio sound so different? The GB's audio is insanely full compared to the GBC.
>>
>>2968579
Probably cheaper components, I'd wager. Same reason why model 1 megadrives had better sound than model 2.
>>
>>2966706
>(Alberto Gonzales worked on the ZX Spectrum not the C64; so they have more a "TZX" flavor)
Actually yeah I see what you mean. I was reminded of Daley Thompson's Decathlon (I had the Speccy version) by a few of those tunes yesterday.
>>
>>2966821
So they modulate pins in software to create pulse waves, and put them through digitally controlled filters?

Like how a first order passive RC filter turns a square wave into an exponential ramp?
>>
>>2968601
Does it also use an integrator circuit to generate a triangle too?
>>
>>2968587
My understanding is that the GB uses 4 batteries, so there's no need to step up the voltage, while the GBC uses 2 batteries, which need to be stepped up (3v to 5v).
The buck converter used to step the voltage up introduces noise.
Also, the GBC may use a cheaper audio amp.

>>2968601
Pretty much.
The two pulse channels are just bitbang'd out of the pins to a filter.
The noise channel is pretty much the same, but the output is just semirandom noise, shaped by a filter.
The fourth channel is 4-bit PCM, with 4 pins going to a DAC.

>>2968603
No, the GB does not have hardware triangle waves.
Instead, the PCM channel cycles through samples to approximate a triangle wave.

Does anybody know what they are capable of, in terms of chiptune. Like, how many channels and what waves could these produce? They both sound super simplistic.
>>
>>2973150
According to tha wikipizzle:

>NeoGeo Pocket Color has 3 squares, noise, and 2 limited PCM channels

>WonderSwan has 4 wavetables with very limited features
>>
>>2973352
Is there a difference between PCM and wavetables?
>>
>>2973397
Wavetable will always loop what it's given, making it a lot harder to use for drums, etc, but good for melody.

Just PCM implies lower-level access, which may be more intensive but also more flexible.
>>
>>2973407
So it's both just sending samples of n-bits to a DAC?
>>
>>2965261
To be honest it fooled me too, because the first time you hear it, is when you get introduced to the Falcon at the beginning of the game.
>>
>>2973397
>>2973421
Better explanation:
The wavetable can only take in a 32 samples, so it can really only be used to make melodic sounds with various timbre. It also uses frequency and volume information to play it back as a note.
The "PCM" in this case is access to a DAC like you said, but there's no indication that it can be used to create melodies, which means it's probably only good for sound effects or rhythm.
>>
>>2973736
>The "PCM" in this case is access to a DAC like you said, but there's no indication that it can be used to create melodies, which means it's probably only good for sound effects or rhythm.
Or you'd have to do it in software. Which, presumably, would be resource-hungry.

>Just PCM implies lower-level access, which may be more intensive but also more flexible.

What do you mean by intensive?
Harder to program or taking more CPU time?
>>
>>2974451
Both, in a way.
Getting PCM to do what you want requires you to program so.
To make a wavetable, one has to program it to cycle through a set number of samples.
To use it to play sampled sound effects, voices, or music requires one to program a way to stream the samples through the channel.
Naturaly, this means the processor has to devote some resources to the PCM.

A pure hardware wavetable just takes a set number of samples and cycles through tham at the appropriate speed, no need for the cpu to give it the samples every cycle.

Japanese (and some western) composers have true understanding of melody, harmony, and rhythm, while Euros just made them brlbrlbrbtbtbtrlbtt and called it a day because muh technique. The fact is the former compositions are much better and thus still widely listened to and remixed, compared to the latter.

The Super Mario Land overworld/birabuto kingdom theme carries this really odd nostalgic vibe.

I never even played the game when I was younger, the first time I did I was 16, but even so, it's oddly...well nostalgic. Not sure why either.

O! listening to this pokemon track sure brings back many memories of my childhood, especially the excruciating pain of not being able to save my progress because my bootleg copy didn't come with a working battery.

My all time favorite handheld OST is from the Sonic 2 for the game gear, specifically the Scrap Brain Zone tune:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSUZZXGbipc&list=PL0AAB36AE22942BF8&index=6 [Embed]

This song evokes a feeling of hope against the destructive forces of greed that bleed dry nature. As Sonic enters this stage, you are faced with a dystopian-like red background that reeks of the putrid smell of a dead nature, killed by concrete and artificial lights and the song conveys this ominous atmosphere. I can't decide whether or not the PAL version is better, I think the faster pace of the NTSC version is a bit more likeable.

I'd say the Game Gear version is actually better, because it hits those deep notes. Don't know how Matt Furniss managed to do that, but he did. Incredible composer. But then again, the track is way to short.

I've never understood what the hell those weird borders around the edges of cliffs in LA/OaA/OaS are supposed to be. They look like stone walls or something. Also, Egg Utopia Act 1, even if it's not retro. Then again, that wasn't part of the question.

I will say I am a little surprised to see no mention of Pokemon TGC (or the Japan-only sequel for that matter). That soundtrack is nothing short of stunning.
Not only is every single track a winner, but you also get legendary songs like this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucQ6rLeRxyg

Do you see this? This is a song that almost takes 3 minutes before it loops again. On the fucking GBC. It's longer than some "actual" songs with lyrics there! Simply amazing.

And like I said, the sequel is just as good. Here is one especially notable track:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoPz3DQv3R0

I don't know anything about analysing music or compositions or whatever. But these songs HAVE to push the GBC to its musical limits. There is no way they could not.
