I remember Nintendo running this during the Christmas period of 1995, in an attempt to put off consumers from buying a PlayStation (Nintendo's machine was still months away).

The fucking thing was still called Ultra 64 at this point. Thank fuck they saw sense.

>The fucking thing was still called Ultra 64 at this point. Thank fuck they saw sense.
The Ultra 64 name kinda makes sense. Their previous console was the Super NES after all.
>>
>>2952065
Thing is, it was ALWAYS intended to be called the Nintendo 64 in Japan - it was only for the West that it was going to be called Ultra 64.

It was only at the 11th hour that Nintendo realised the power of unified brand recognition - as demonstrated by Sony's PlayStation and their own GameBoy.

Since then, the whole rediculous tradition of having different names for different regions has been dropped.

Besides, Ultra 64 was a stinky name.
>>
>>2952085
Should have stuck with the naming conventions they had already put in place, frankly.

Nintendo
Super Nintendo
Ultra Nintendo

Where does this 64 business come in, that's not a fucking name, it's a number.

>Thing is, it was ALWAYS intended to be called the Nintendo 64 in Japan - it was only for the West that it was going to be called Ultra 64.
I'm pretty sure Nintendo's plan was always to call it the Ultra 64 worldwide and drop the whole Famicom/NES distinction they had up to this point, but trademark issues over the word "Ultra" in Japan led it to be renamed the Nintendo 64 over there, so they adopted that name in the west as well. If they wanted a different name in Japan to begin with, they would've called it the Famicom 64.

The amount of bits was a selling point back in those days.

SEGA's Megadrive/Genesis has a huge fucking 16BITS stamped right on the console.

It was basically Nintendo saying "fuck everybody else, our machine has 64 bits! Wooaahhhh!"

Final Fantasy.

Japanese adverts had beautiful handdrawn character artwork.

American ads have a pic of a brain with a dipstick in it.

64 bits man! That's twice as much as the other systems! I don't know what that means and what they actually do but I WANT IT! WANT IT WANT IT WANTIT!

When I was a kid I was sure that the Nintendo after Super Nintendo was going to be Hyper Nintendo.

And I was sure that Final Fantasy 7 was going to be on Hyper Nintendo.

There's a rumor that the USA SNES was designed that way to stop fat-assed American kids from resting cans of coke on top of the machines.

Many NES models were ruined because spilt juice.

Make that 5. I bought it for 5 euros and I am having a blast with it. Everything looks colorful and the music sounds pretty good for a SNES game. Best deal I ever made for a retro game in this day and age.
