Playing through it right now on Wii VC. Game is pretty good. Currently at Star Hill. Finally have the full party but not sure who to run with. I'm guessing I should run Mario, Geno/Mallow, Bowser for regular enemies and swap in Peach for bosses?
Also the game is extremely comfy. I feel like the dialogue is funnier in Paper Mario games but I'm digging the combat in this game better. I actually like how your "partners" are full fledged characters you level up and equip. That kinda bugged me in the paper Mario game.

Why hasn't Nintendo tried to do a real sequel with SquareEnix?
I love Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, but I'm always wondering what it would be like to have Nintendo and Square do another Super Mario RPG.
It'll never happen. Oh well, at least we have Kingdom Hearts.

The thing about this game, as much as I love it, is that there's nothing really to talk about. It's such a bog standard RPG, and apart from the timed battle commands, which have been improved and refined in every subsequent game in the series, there is nothing unique or memorable about it. The entire appeal of this game is the kitsch factor of having a Mario RPG.

After you've beaten the game and forgotten about it, try playing SMRPG Revolution a few years from now. Its a balance hack that makes the combat system and characters a little deeper and more customizable, but also makes the game much harder. More items with more diverse effects, character stats are more polarized, stuff like that.
Excellent game. I played it for the first time on the Wii's VC, then bought it for the Super Famicom.
I like the humor in it. Square gave Mario a flavor that is different but equal to Nintendo.

The Square that made this game back in the day isn't the SquareEnix of today. In fact a lot of the developers of this game went on to join Alphadream and make the M&L series.

It's just the regular 3 FP jump attack that gets stronger. It takes 255 uses of it to max it out. If you use it once per battle you can easily max it out by the 4th or 5th star. I wouldn't worry too much about it because it gets outclassed by regular Lazy Shell attacks in the endgame. The only benefit to boosting jump attack power is if you decide to grind early on and want to do like 400 damage to the early bosses and one shot everything.
