So I spent the last hour or so trying to find anything on the internet to sate my curiosity over this, but with no luck.
So this level, at the beginning of World 1-2, in Super Mario Bros. 2 has a jar you drop into which apparently only has a 1-up Mushroom, and serves no other function. As you can see though, the floor can be bombed leading to...somewhere. Everything I've checked makes no reference to this, and I have no idea if it's possible to pull a bomb and see what's down there. So I ask, /vr/: What the hell is under that floor?
Also, general unanswered secrets thread.
>>
in DKC1... in the first level... beginning of the game... you can see a 1UP balloon at the way top of the screen on a tree top, but if you jump or manage to get up there it always disappears... like some weird 1up glitch or something...

The first Wizards and Warriors for the NES, level 2, there's an area of the map that, I swear to God, is impossible to reach. I spent hours trying to get up there, but with no luck. Is it at all possible to actually get up here?
>>

Also, while on the subject, what the fuck does the Cloak of Darkness (that's the name of the power-up, right?) even do? It just turns you "invisible" and plays the potion music, but enemies still attack you, and you take the normal amount of damage (as far as I know). I've never been able to figure out what its actual function was for.
>>
As far as I know, there are some jars where you find a key, wich is under that floor. I think that floor exists because of design reasons, as the people who were making the scenarios simply decided to recycle the same background instead of making one with just a plain jar floor.
>>
>>2933282
But the other jar has a normal, non bombable floor. Plus, the one in the OP doesn't have the key in it. It's just a 1-Up.
The one with the key has a normal floor, while the one with only a 1-Up mushroom has a bombable floor.
And even if it is due to some design reason, surely it must go SOMEwhere. Is there a way to use rom-hacks to do something like spawn a bomb to find out?
>>
>>2933282
There are other jars that have a plain floor, afaik.

I don't think it would be too difficult to figure out how to swap out whatever that plant is with a bomb. If no-one has any answers I'll have a go in a while.

Also, are there any level editors or map rips for SMB2? They could provide some insight.
>>
>>2933282

mario 2 is lazy as fuck
>>
>>2933301

It may have been done to save cartridge space. They simply recycled the map but loaded different objects instead of having two separate maps.
>>
>>2933295
Okay, I've played around a bit with it and there doesn't seem to be anything underneath. If you try to go under the blocks you just die like when you fall off the screen.
>>
>>2933262
>/vr/: What the hell is under that floor?
According to the level editor, a pit. Far down the pit, outside the jar there is one of those birdmask little hopping enemies like there in your screenshot, but that's it.

>>2933281
>what the fuck does the Cloak of Darkness (that's the name of the power-up, right?) even do? It just turns you "invisible" and plays the potion music, but enemies still attack you, and you take the normal amount of damage (as far as I know).
Thats EXACTLY what it does, it turns you invisible so you have a harder time. It's a trap power-up. Avoid it whenever possible.

>>2933282
They reused graphics and layouts, but every single jar room in SMB2 is it's own level. There's some jars in LVL2 like the one OP pictured that have never ending layers of bomb-able rock at the bottom, but only a turtle shell present.

Nifty. Could you please do this for the Level 2 jars as well?
>>
>>2933442
That is the level 2 jar. I must have accidentally deleted the purple bird dude when I swapped the plants. The other level 2 jar with the key has a solid bottom.
>>
>>2933279

you need the blue potion. it spawns kinda far away but you still have enough time to make it up there.

>>2933281
you take less damage from a couple enemies, like literally one single piece of the life bar less, and most enemies only do one piece of damage anyways. useless item
>>
>>2933448
Whoops, no I meant level 2-1 or 2-2 jars, not the jars in level 1-2.
>>
>>2933470
Those ones have the same nothingness in the editor. Probably not much point in webm-ing them as well.
>>
>>2933440
Huh, that's really weird. Thanks for that, Anon.
>>
>>2933272
Nah there's several balloons, 2 red and one green. You've gotta roll off the tree and jump at the end of the roll to make it.
>>
>>2933262
In pokemon red if you swim down from pallet town there's a wall with grass behind it, no way to get there, I've always wondered what rare pokemans spawn there.

From what I remember, Sonic games always had rings that didn't even seem like they were designed to be accessible.
>>
>>2933558
That's usually how it is. Going off-retro for a second, Shadow of the Colossus had shitloads of rumors of what was at the very top of the tower, above the garden. The answer was fucking nothing. Shame, too, since they actually did consider adding the top.
>>
>>2933432
>one of those birdmask little hopping enemies

That just raises more questions. It sounds like a scrapped idea for a bigger pot map.

Has anybody actually been to the top of that wall of slot machine/point bracket things at the beginning of Casino Night without debugging?
Is it even possible? It just seemed so weird that they'd be there.

the ones that give you points? yep, it is possible

Nothing. Although I do enjoy using a noclip GameGenie code to thoroughly explore and sequence break.

How are you supposed to get that coin/block? Can't tailspin underwater, no P-switch, no Koopa shell/etc. That one always bothered me. I always figured it would have a third 1-up mushroom in it, but is impossible to get.
>>
>>2934192
Can't you carry Koopa shells through pipes? I imagine that's how.
>>
>>2934424
Not in Mario 3.
>>
>>2934424
Only in the GBA version.

Preeeetty sure you can. I've been watching speed runs and TAS's of this game all day today, and they've been doing that a lot. Maybe it's only through certain pipes, though.

nah man, play again and looks for the disappearing 1up... you'll see it.

The game crashes if you go there, so nothing.

That's all well and good for the GBA version, but for the NES version, how would it be possible to get it? Why even have it there if it is impossible to get?

Which one? I just watched several playthrough videos where all of the 1-ups are obtained.

Tried for a week to jump the flagpole in SMB when I was seven just to see if I could manually go down the pipe.

Turns out there is no pipe and the screen will just continue into infinity until time runs out. Disappointing.
>>
>>2935045
It's an obstacle. The reason why it's a coin block is because the room already has coin blocks in it. As they were creating the level they just used the same blocks they were already using to create an obstacle. You are putting way, WAY too much thought into an incidental design ramification.
