Sup /vr/, post your retro battlestations. I need inspiration for getting my "study" set up in my apartment. If you have a small space, I'm especially interested.

I plan on doing a retropie setup along with a dreamcast.

>>
>>2917719
Hahaha, yeah, the Ikegami used to be on a bigger stand when it was my primary game console monitor. I like how the Famicom and MSX2 display on it, so I decided to keep it even after shifting most consoles to the XP29. The small stand is pretty sturdy and kinda-sorta fits between my other crap (I'd prefer to keep all of my gaming stuff together, but after getting everything organized it might get moved to another room).

Reposting the only picture I have of my recent set-up. Still working on cleaning/restoring and modifying my old systems for RGB, so there's not much there right now. Once I had a good CRT to hook them up to, turns out that pretty much all of my systems are the worst motherboard revisions in some capacity.
>SNES is a launch unit with shit RGB quality. Also yellow like a motherfucker.
>N64 is a later unit and is incompatible with the easiest RGB mod
>Genesis is early model 2 with abysmal sound output
Threw in a picture of the chair I use, which is really good for a low-profile battlestation.

>>2917681
Looks nice, lots of utility. Where did you find it? I might pick one up when I move and have the space for it.
>>
I have a decent set up going for all my HD consoles but my CRT is just on the floor elsewhere . My biggest obstacle seems to be finding something that is both strong and large enough to fit my 27". I've been told to use a bookcase but any of them that are big enough for the tv are either too tall or don't have the proper shelving
>>
>>2918240
>My biggest obstacle seems to be finding something that is both strong and large enough to fit my 27"
I often look for "corner TV stands" when buying for CRTs. They end up being deeper and stronger than the flimsy, shallow crap that most companies churn out for LCDs.

I would also check a flea market or thrift shop. Sometimes they get some solid stuff.

good luck frying ur eyes retards

its not for input lag purposes, as in scope controllers or some extra hard timed-jump platformer, no reason whatsoever to play on CRT instead of a simple nX scaled same-ratio image, using s-video or rbg output instead of composite is much more interesting or meaningful than playing on useless tube technology for nostalgia purposes
>>
>>2918240
you can hire any backalley metal worksohp to put togheter a simple 4 feet table support, and throw a slab of plywood on top of it, apply oil, DONE,

much better tha rellying on OSB or worse simply cardboard furniture at plywood prices just becaus it comes with shinny wood themed adhesive covering it

spacially for having a 20-40 Kg tv crt on top it it, with consoles underneath it

Someone certainly IS a retard here.
>(if) not for input lag purposes, as in scope controllers or some extra hard timed-jump platformer, no reason whatsoever to play on CRT
Ok. A lot of people here play those games and use CRTs for just that. So yeah.

The thing is, I will straight up admit that about 50% of why I play my retro games on a CRT is nostalgia. The rest of the reasons (no upscaling, no lag) are just the icing on the cake. Or maybe it's the other way around. The thing is, anyone who appreciates aesthetics and authenticity will enjoy playing on a CRT, and those same people will also automatically get the inherent benefits of a CRT that even you yourself admitted.

The other reason I play is that I like having a dedicated retro game station to keep my main entertainment center/flatscreen from being super cluttered. I like having a cozy setup with a beanbag chair that I can just plop down in and play some good vidya for a bit.

>>
>>2918048
Yes, the KDL-50W800B. It has 22ms lag according to the Leo Bodnar test, which puts it at a +16ms lag over a CRT (~1 frame). Seems to work pretty well.

>>2918394
>>2917980
I custom built the racks. It's mostly a wood setup spaced far enough apart for each controller's needs, with hand-bent wire holders sprayed with Plastic Dip. The cubbies were screwed in at a down-and-back slight angle to keep the cords in, and the base is weighted.

>>2917884
Because they still work, so I haven't had a reason to buy any more. 3 of those 4 were my original controllers when the N64 came out.

Best I could find so far is a pic I took when the plastic dip was drying. See here. I straightened out the bends a little following that, but was pretty much done.
>>
>>2918563
That's quite descriptive, actually, anon! I can actually see a bit how it's made. Many thanks!
I needed proper ways to store my controllers and I still have some wood laying around.

One question remains, though, how'd you do the metal? I mean, did you drill holes in the wood, or did you glue them on?
>>
>>2918576
The wires were galvanized steel, 14 or 16 gauge (can't remember which).

To bend and shape them, I used a very high gauge wire (22 I think) to create a template form-factored to an actual controller. Then, using that, I screwed bolts into some throw-away wood at all of the pivot points, so I could slide in and bend-around to the shape on the stronger wire. It's sorta hard to describe without a picture, but I hope it's conveyed right.

To mount them, I drilled a hole about an inch in, and put some wood glue on the tip of the wires and stuck them in. Then, I put gorillia clear glue on the outside for extra hold. No wiggling at all yet.
>>
>>2918582
Correction, was about 2 inches in that I drilled the holes.
>>

I think I get it
>Og drill tiny hole
>Og put glue
>Og put in metal
>Og bend metal with bear hands
>Og bend metal to correct controller shape

I think I understand the concept of the pivot points but I think this'll work fine too.

Thanks again!

i posted this in the last thread but sure

>>
>>2918627
One correction to your line there (I think), and a missing step-- I had the wire parts completely shaped before drilling any holes in the main unit or gluing anything down. So my steps were:

For each controller wire holder
> Use weak metal wire to outline the shape desired (make template)
->Grab junk board and some bolts and drill bolts into board at all the 'bend points' of the template
> Bend a proper gauge wire on the template board into the shape needed
> Drill holes in the stands for the controller wire

After all were done, I stuck all of the controller wires into another temp board and sprayed it down with plastic dip 3x. After that dried, I removed them one by one and...

- Put glue on two ends of controller wire holder
- Inserted it
- Put clear glue on the outside
- Waited to dry, and did finishing touches.

Then again I'm a habitual clutterbutter so I'm obviously not bsg material.

Partially, but really it's because of vertical clearance. S&K + Sonic 3 wouldn't fit on top of the 32x, and I play that snap-in often.

yes i think there are many of these fine lines but you are correct. I admit that i got into retro collecting / playing on hardware out of sheer boredom. But i don't regret ... if i want to be social again i can invite my friends to play some good ol' retro games. And if i want to get in a relationship again, i hope to find a match that tolerates or even appreciates all that gaming culture / tech goodness. I'm a tech guy and always was, my last GF was really glad about that.
>>
>>2920913
Some people just like to collect things because they think it's fun. I like to think of myself as a curator of my interests.

>>2920963
If someone doesn't want a relationship with you because of what you choose to decorate your space with, they're more interested in an idea than a real connection.
>>
>>2920986
>your space
nah, if you move in together there often is no "your personal space" anymore. And women often have a more sharpened / defined / restrictive sense of decoration where something like a BVM really doesn't fit in. It's kinda ordinary. That's why you need a GF that's either very tolerant or just as nerdy as you are.
>>
>>2921002

She is a tomboy with short hair and gave herself a unisex name, only hung out with boys and acted like a boy most of the time. She only liked men and didn't think she was trans.

Expect girls into vidya to be more masculine than you'd like unless they're East Asian.

That's not true. This is no different from previous generations of men with hobbies. My dad, for instance, has metric fucktons of lionel trains along with a massive layout in the basement. And don't get me started on all the AV equipment he's had since the 70s.

It's really not weird or uncommon to dedicate time/space toward a hobby.
>>
>>2921078
>she didn't think she was trans
>2016
>having to clarify that someone isn't planning on permanently altering their body through drugs and surgery because they enjoy hobbies that are stereotypically associated with the opposite gender
>>
>>2921250
it is. I'm not talking about parents with a big house, basement, garages etc. where space is plenty. I'm talking about a young couple with a small 2-3 room rented apartment where retrodude wants to sacrifice a whole room for his fetish
>>
>>2921595
That's not the same issue though. And it's still not specific to video games. The space issue would be just the same if I wanted to have lionel train setups in an apartment, or if I wanted to set up my home gym in an apartment, or if I wanted to have enough clothes to fill a massive walk in closet, etc.
>>
>>2921603
yes, all of these options can cause a massive argument.
>>
>>2921661
That's what I'm saying. It's nothing specific to liking old video games.
>>
>>2921729
correct, but there are always some boundaries that may be exceeded. A model train world is something i would call very beautiful and would expect others to like it, too. A BVM/PVM looks like an ugly fridge - or, as recently discovered, like a microwave. Personally, i still really like this, but...
>>
>>2921780
That comes down to personal opinions. Moreover, neither is really going to be looked at more favorably by your gf/wife than the other. The point being that a (I guess I should put in a disclaimer saying *decent*) woman is most likely going to be okay with your hobby, regardless of whether its having mountains of AV equipment, lionel trains, video games, guns, or whatever else. Every man has his interests and every woman "puts up" with them. This is normal.

You definitely can't hear 100kHz. You can't even hear 31kHz (but dogs can). If there's whine you're hearing, it's not from the CRT itself. But low quality power supplies might have audio frequency whine (this sometimes happens with LCDs).

My current plan for a battlestation is: A 30-42 unit 19-inch rack.

Doors on front and back for viewing and cabling purposes. Wheels for easy Movement. Locks on doors to keep prying and away.

Very small footprint.

Basically, right now, all my modern systems are run via HDMI into this receiver, which then outputs to my TV via HDMI, and 7.1 via speaker cables and of course coax out to the sub.

All my retro consoles are running via composite into composite video switchers, which then go via composite cables to the receiver, where it spits out an HDMI signal to my TV and the sound out to the two front stereo speakers. Or mono, in the case of the NES.

I'm moving soon, which gives me the excuse to trash this setup and redo as much as I can with S-Video and VGA cables. I'm in the U.S., so no SCART. Is there any benefit to me buying one of those little Composite to HDMI scaler boxes? I assume my Receiver is doing all the work for that already, but I want to be sure. Just hoping someone here might be able to tell me for sure.

>inb4 "just emulate, loser". My original Xbox has a big fat hard drive in there full of thousands of retro games and an armada of emus. Same goes for my Wii. I just like to play stuff on the original hardware. It's comfy, and there's just something nice about it. I dig both methods. We can all get along.

Also, is there anything other than Dreamcast that's worth running in VGA? And whatever it's worth, my PS2 and Xbox are using component cables.

Yeah, that was the site I came across when looking for info. I'm glad later models do a better job.
The shit RGB on the early SNES is actually very noticeable, especially when you've been playing a Genesis or PS1, both of which have some really crisp video output by comparison.

I lucked out and got a really clean, late-model SNES at a flea market for 30 bucks. The guy running the stall was nice enough to let me open it and check for the right chip. Pic related, after I got it all cleaned up. To hell with anyone that says the NA SNES is ugly. A little oversized maybe, but not ugly.

>>2919750
Post pics. Cluttered, haphazard battlestations are my favorite. I love seeing stacks of games and controllers strewn about. It sort of sends this message of escapism, that all you really care about it what's happening on the TV screen, and isn't that how we all played games when we were kids? We didn't give a shit how good our setup looked or how tidy our wires were. We made sure our TV was on channel 3 and pushed the power button.
>>
>>2927364
Sensible and tidy. I like it.

Nothing against impressive collections like >>2917870, but I never did see the point. I prefer small, focused collections to large shelves and displays that border on being museums. I love retro games, but I look back, and there are generally fewer than 10 or 15 games that I feel are worth owning and playing repeatedly on any given system, and generally only 5 games or so that I truly love and consider my favorites. Does having a wall of tons of retro games appeal to me? Somewhat. But I would never spend enough time playing each and every one of them to make it worth it, The only benefit would be being able to say "Yeah, I own that."
