Honestly, you should start with a mainline DQ game.

DQ Monsters is meant for A) People that want more from the DQ series but have played a shit ton or all of them and B) People that LOVE Monster RPGs.

Either way, if this is how you get into the series I'd love to have ya as this means more discussion.

Monsters was my first Dragon Quest game and that worked out fine for me

I've seen screenshots of 1+2 and it looks pretty good, in fact, I've been waiting on a translation patch for years, at least I know it'll be done someday
