Since most of you seem older than posters on other boards, when did anime actually start becoming popular in the US? I was only in elementary school during the 90s and thus started with Toonami.
>>

Let's not derail the thread, but only pokemon and dbz were truly popular in the early 2000s. Maybe sailor moon, robotech before that.

It's tough to say because so many of the cartoons we watched in the 80's were actually anime, we just didn't know it. In terms of actual anime fandom, fan subs started getting big in the 80's. But that's "big" within the anime community which was still tiny.

I would say it was with Sailormoon and Dragon Ball that started getting marketed as being Japanese that the whole anime thing started to become mainstream and got popular. By the mid 90's it was swinging.

>>2909383
Kind of hard to derail a thread about anime with talk of anime.

It's far from my favorite movie, but in terms of games I think pic related is one of the best anime games ever made.

It really started to take off in the early 90's. As a point of reference, the first Otakon was held in 1994, so it was a big enough fandom to support its own conventions by then, instead of just being those weirdos who would hide themselves away in some screening room attached to a larger scifi convention.

I often hear people attribute a lot of the popularity 5th gen games with heavy anime aesthetics (especially JRPGs) to the concurrent boom in anime popularity itself. I can't speak for larger trends, but for me it was certainly true.

My personal favorite game based off an anime was Samurai Pizza Cats (or Kyattou Ninden Teyandee) for NES. It felt kinda Mega Man-ish, but still had its own original feel. The artwork was really good - characters from the show looked like themselves, and original characters/settings fit in well. Every supporting character from the series seemed to have an appropriate role - I like the way they incorporated the Rescue Team. The music was pretty sweet, too. It's a shame it was only released in Japan, because the foreign dubs improved the show's writing considerably.

Dirty Pair is my favorite anime of the 80s - and it got one of the worst game adaptations. In my deepest fantasies, there'd be a licensed port of Smash TV with the characters/setting. The premise lends itself really well to mindless shooting, bright colors, cute unlockable outfits, and co-op multiplayer.

Urusei Yatsura is close behind that. Its games were pretty meh - but good enough considering how the format didn't really suit video games. Ranma 1/2 was much more appropriate for games, and it had some good ones.

In terms of non-vidya: Project A-ko had an incredibly strong start, and I personally really like Dr. Slump, but it veers into lolrandumn territory at times.

Slayers is the best of the 90s, and got some nice games. I'm reminded of it a bit when I play Guardian Heroes or Mega Man Legends.

FLCL, Di Gi Charat, and Excel Saga are like the Dreamcast and GBA threads - occasionally considered the cutoff point for "retro", have cult/hipsterish followings, and can be pretty experimental. Especially Di Gi Charat and the Dreamcast - they're low-budget and not as strong compared to competitors, and couldn't last very long, but the people behind them were still incredibly idealistic and seemed to genuinely love what they were doing. Seeing old fliers for defunct Broccoli websites in second-hand mangas makes me feel nostalgic and sad, even if I'm a stupid /vr/ kiddie.
>>
>>2909453

Best DBZ fighting game.

Hyper Dimension comes close but it lacks the split screen mechanic of Butoden games.
>>
>>2909535
>Hyper Dimension comes close but it lacks the split screen mechanic of Butoden games.

Which isn't necessarily a fault since it makes the game faster paced. HD also allowed you to smash people into different parts of the map (including air battles), and allowed you to do counter special moves.

It also had a fucking awesome art style. I wish they made a new 2d-only DBZ game with that art direction, it looked so damn good.
>>
>>2909542

Enter the cheat code for Turbo speed on Super Butoden 2 and it's even faster than HD.

Super Butoden 2 also lets you send opponents flying off further in the screen (and actually far away since the screen splits, including air battles or underwater), and of course also lets you do counter special moves, or block them/neutralize them.

Also dashing with L and R. Playing SB2 with a friends who also knows how to play is endless fun. HD is awesome too, but it's more of a traditional fighting game, SB2 feels more unique, and since you're dashing around a lot both on feet and air, it feels like real DBZ battles.

SB2 also has a great art style, although I'll admit HD looks much better, since it was a late SFC game, but SB2 still looks great.

I especially like the cutscene sprites, I wish they'd do a 2D DBZ fighting game using these.

The Nadia MD game is kind of a story-based adventure game with puzzles, it looks like an RPG because of the overview and how the dungeons are laid out, etc, but there actually isn't any battles. You just go around, picking up items, talking to people, solving puzzles, getting lost a lot. I only died once or twice because some of the dungeons have traps that will kill you, but you just start at the beginning of the dungeon.

>>
>>2910527
This answer varies depending on when (and where) you're asking, and can get very complicated... but to try and keep it simple:

Genlock (Generator lock). It's a hardware device that let you synchronize two video streams (e.g., an anime episode and a subtitle track) so that you could merge them and output them to VHS.

By the late 80s the Amiga was the subtitler's method of choice. It was cheap and had inherent support for genlock and since it was a computer you could buy/write/steal software that let you generate a subtitle track. Then, you just stuck a VCR between the computer and your TV and hit record. Presto, instant master VHS. From there, you'd just copy the VHS and mail it to whomever needed it.

That's very generally how it was.

It's really largely the same thing. The original was full of puns, pop culture references, fourth wall breaking and adlibbing too. Now that the original show has actually been released with subtitles, I would have thought these old myths would have been dispelled. But it seems they just have too much momentum.

Well, I kinda agree with you, the quality of the production is great, it included staff from the TV series to draw the scenes, to all the original VAs, but the story is kind of tame for something like Evangelion.
I still love it because of nostalgia and because of Mana, but yeah it could have been better.
I think Girlfriend of Steel 2 has a lot more options and endings, but honestly I didn't want to play that game because it looks horrible, like a fanmade game, and also no Mana, makes no sense to have called it GoS2.

Yes, I think it was mainly aimed at kids and teens, but like many anime of the time it contained very dark stuff. The Megadrive game is the same, it has a lot of dark and violent moments.
Anime in the 80s and especially the 70s was even darker. Look at something like Kerokko Demetan and Hutch the Bee, they're shows aimed exclusively at kids and they're dark as fuck.

>Was it even pitched at kids?
Definitely. It was even supposed to be one of the World Masterpiece Theatre anime, that's why it takes a lot of 2000 Leagues under the Sea and is generally considered to be family friendly. I mean, the basic story idea is from Hayao Miyazaki (just compare it to Castle in the Sky), who made mostly family movies.
>Was kinda dark from memory.
More or less. I'd say not much darker than your average Disney movie. Dead parents and death everywhere. Some parents think that's bad, like mine, others think it's character moulding.

That looks really similar to a show I remember in the 80's where the big guy was always talking about spaceburgers. But I looked it up and it's a little late, the one I'm remembering would have been more Robotech era.

Actually I'm pretty sure it was a different show, but there's a chance it was from the later Robotech episodes that weren't based of Macross. Any clue what I'm talking about?

The other 2 shows that formed Robotech were Southern Cross and Mospeada.

Ohh I know that, but I don't remember if any of them had a big helfty guy like in that pic always going on about and eating space hamburgers.

Since we're getting off topic here, I'd like to at least mention the Famicom Captain Tsubasa games, they recreatd the show rather faithfully and were pretty fun too from what I remember.

>>
>>2917543
There are actually several Tenchi Muyo games.

First, and most well-known is probably the TRPG for SFC (Tenchi Muyo Game Hen). It's like a really lightweight FE or FFT. Emphasis on the "really" and "lightweight" parts.

Then there's a puzzle game or two for Saturn (Tenchi Muyo Rensa Hitsuyou), and another ultra-lightweight VN-style game called Tenchi Muyo Toukou Muyo.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were one or two other titles; it didn't look particularly well-documented in the 5 seconds I took to look'em up online.

there are a lot of anime histories, but the short version is that is slowly grew from the 70's until the massive boom with the release of Pokemon on TV.

1) Speed Racer and Astroboy, in the 70s
2) Voltron and Robotech, in the 80's. OVAs starting to creep in
3) loads of OVAs and direct-to-video releases, Sailor Moon, and Samurai Pizza Cats, in the early 90's
4)Pokemon, then Toonami picking up Sailor Moon and DBZ

all the while games were having progressively more "anime" stylings and retaining more of their original designs. in the 80's, no one knew that NES games were actually japanese. by the Playstation era, it was pretty common knowledge. if you played enough games, though, you could sorta tell. I knew that some games had a certain style, verve, that others didn't. I had already seen a lot of adapted anime, because my parents rented a ton of cartoons for us when we lived in Germany. I already had an idea what anime looked like, from Grandizer, Voltron, Robotech, and a bunch of other shows.

Spotted the underage. Anyone alive back when those actually went mainstream would have known those were picked up on other stations before Cartoon Network even came up with Toonami.

I haven't played any of the To Heart games, but the first anime is great (haven't watched the others yet but they're probably not as good). Not at all what you might expect from an adaptation of a harem-type adult VN. Great direction, art, animation, music and sound design (mostly ambient sounds and diegetic music, which is unusual). Very underrated show. Seeing as how the studio and director never seemed to go places, it looks like people didn't take much notice of it.

>i tried watching Nadia but after like an episode I simply didn't like it. maybe cause it was the english dub or something idk didn't click with me.

There's DVDrips with japanese audio and subtitles available now. Nadia is a mixed bag but I think the good outweighs the bad. It starts off as a light hearted adventure series for kids, but then comes some darker and more twisted stuff, it's a good mix of both adventure and conspiracy/dark sci-fi.
The really bad episodes is the infamous "island arc" that's near the end of the series, basically it's 3 or 4 episodes that were animated in korea and are weird as fuck, characters act out of their normal selves and the plot is as stupid as it gets, most of it doesn't make sense. The very definition of filler, very bad filler. However right after the island arc come the last 5 episodes of the series which might as well be the very best on the entire thing, plot gets back on point and better than ever, the climax hits and everything comes to a conclusion, these last 5 episodes have excellent animation too (for TV standards at least). It's like they wanted to save up budget by shitting up the island episodes to make up for the grand finale.
I definitely recommend watching Nadia, it's one of my favorite series, even with its flaws.

As for the Megadrive game, as I said on the post you quotes, it's an adventure game with point and click elements. It's a nice little game and offers a different take on the story with many changes, it's not too long and good to play if you want more Nadia.

I know a bunch of people have replied before, but

http://vakarangi.blogspot.ca/p/blog-page.html

Still, like he says, you can pretty much start anywhere, since the series has a loose chronology. About half the settings/characters are permanently gone at the end of each outing, anyway, so things from the past won't pop up often.

I'd say start with the TV series if you don't mind some low-budget animation and filler episodes, but otherwise, do the OVAs first (generally all-around good), then the three specials. My experience states that the specials are divisive but worth watching. That blogger loved Nolandia, liked Flight 005, and hated Eden; another reviewer loved Eden, liked Nolandia, and hated Flight 005; I loved Flight 005, liked Eden, and hated Nolandia; nobody I've seen has disliked all three.

Flash is generally kinda bleh, Warren's comics change a lot of things in a way that divides people, and the original novels' translations are pretty lacking; but don't let that stop you if you.

Well, I don't think Gunbuster has any bad episode or filler, then again it's just 6 OVA episodes.

>>2918562
>First movie was a little mediocre, but the second one was great.
You got that backwards, mate. Bloodlust is worth watching only because it's beautifully animated
>>
>>2918692

Man, 2000/early 2001 era Locomotion was probably the best TV channel EVER.

It had everything I could have ever wanted as a 14 year old back then. Movies like Akira and GITS, OVAs like Urotsukidoji, Ah My Goddess, Ellcia (anyone remember this gem?), motherfucking Dirty Pair was also on Locomotion. And TV series like Evangelion (I had already watched it on VHS years before, but seeing Evangelion actually on TV back then was mind blowing), Saber Marionette J, Lupin the 3rd original green jacket series, and many many others.

Also, the great thing about Locomotion was that it wasn't just anime, I remember there was also an 80s cartoon section in the morning with He-man, She-ra and others, which was a great nostalgia punch, and weird western adult-themed stuff like Aeon Flux, The Head, Duckman, etc.
And on top of all that, it also included obscure animation short films, possibly from independent authors. I remember one that was japanese, but wasn't anime (in the sense of traditional anime), it was about an old man and elephants... I wish I could find that again.

And on top of all that, the channel's layout and ID signals and shit was just so damn awesome, look at these id's:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5kfkiEFK0g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltyz9tyvsro
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhaahBkIMZo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5XRRWDjUiU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3zcuACes7A

And fuck, even the advisory before each show telling if a show was not suited for younger audiences was also cool as hell

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vI0t9Pttfog

And of course, the memorable Evangelion promo with the carmina burana-esque music, this shit gave me the chills. Still does.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBHZ_fN3ljo

Then Locomotion changed the layout around mid-2001, and eventually it became 100% anime, and around 2008, Sony bought Locomotion and turned it into Animax, which I really didn't care for.

I salute you, my old friend.

One on the many problems with Toonami is that it never really showed the classics. They never had a good selection. Man, I love the way everything has this dark feel to it. Most of these futuristic geo-cityscapes of 80's/90's era anime have this grey color tone which in moments looks clean, but at the same time are drawn dirty, rough, and full of grit. It's really hard to explain what it is without sounding too convoluted. Regardless, it puts me at ease, and a sense of longing.

Degradation.

Ys is quite nice too, especially since they are very close to the games itself:

How was the Panzer Dragoon anime? Seems kind of mediocre.

I've heard it's really bad every time, but maybe it just got a bad localization?... or maybe it's just bad.

I want to watch the Goemon anime, but I'm also afraid I'll be disappointed. Anyone watched it?
>>
>>2933191
The Goemon ova fared quite a bit better. Its funny and has a ton of references to other konami games.

The tv series was not as good from what I've seen. ovas are usually better than tv.

Nice, I didn't knew there were OVAs.
I'm assuming there isn't subs.

you should watch the tv series too. I just know the eng dub is awful.

I have both of the Saturn games but can't understand enough Japanese to fully appreciate them. Being able to use Dragon Slave right off the bat gave me the biggest boner I've ever had and then using all of my mana for Ragna Blade made my dick explode.

It's excellent! I think. I can't play it. The first level is nice.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is dope.

why the fuck isn't /ar/ a thing yet

it would be about the same level of board activity as /vr/, maybe only slightly less. especially now that it;s getting easier and easier to find old good anime on youtube and the like

I mean, I know this board is a spinoff from /v/, but really?

Have you looked up how much pre-2000 anime is out there compared to the amount of pre-2000 games?
Not to mention there's typically less to discuss unless you go to Eva levels of retardation.

>Have you looked up how much pre-2000 anime is out there compared to the amount of pre-2000 games?

Since there's anime since at least the 60s (and even earlier manga), there's probably more anime than there is video games.

What?

>>Since there's anime since at least the 60s (and even earlier manga), there's probably more anime than there is video games.
There's 80 TV anime from the 60s, 210 from the 70s, 310 from the 80s and 450 from the 90s so a little over 1000 in total.
Compare that to 1000 licensed games for the NES or SNES or 2000 licensed titles for the PS1.

But there's loads of OVAs from the late 80s and 90s too.

Most good anime was OVA in that era anyway
>>
>>2938494

So you're just talking about TV anime?

What about manga? /a/ is both manga and anime discussion.
>>
>>2938508
I'm getting 1100 OVA from 1983-2000, including hentai. and most of those are only one or two episodes.
I've actually seen half of those myself.

And look at us, we managed to keep this board busy with 10 games.

>>2938517
Manga are hard to quantify. There's manga for every shit but they're hard to acquire and I'm not sure who cares about some three chapter tie-in.
Another problem is lack of translations. Some here obviously understand Japanese but the rest is limited to a small number of translated titles.

Why? Is it the Monster Arena stuff?

I want to replay this game, but there is no hope at the end and it makes me feel like shit.

I don't know, if I had to choose between "Everyone lives happily ever after because of asspull" and "Amost the whole world is destroyed and most of humanity dies", I might have to go with the former
>>
>>2940838
One would certainly hope.

I always appreciated the work /jpc/ did with old Japanese compurer games. True /vr/oes.
>>
>>2940838
Maybe it would encourage people to learn Japanese.
>>
>>2919228
That's not an improved version, Robotech was (for the first 36 episodes) mostly a straight Macross dub with names changed and Protoculture becoming an energy source.
>>
>>2919916
The songs are a core element of the show but it's definitely not 36 episodes of Lynn Minmay singing. It's 30% space opera with awesome space dogfights, 30% analysis of the culture shock between Zentradi (the vilains of the show) and humans, 30% romantic triangle Between Hikaru Ichijo, Miya Hayase and Lynn Minmay and the remaining 10% are about space politics and Lynn Minmay's song. This asshole doesn't appear very often in the show, calm your fucking tits.
