I don't mind this at all in J-PS1 games, but I also don't mind in SNES menus when these buttons are reversed.

Is there any official explanation as to why they did that change in America? was it even SONY's idea or did one publisher do it and the others started copying it?

I've heard a lot of rumors and personal opinion but nothing official, you would expect this would have been mentioned in some sort of document or interview by now.

I remember ff7 throwing me off way back when. So apparently my preference there runs early and deep.

It's hardcoded into the Playstation OS depending on the region (the memory card menu), so the switch was intended by Sony since the beginning.
Why the change happened is unknown, or at least a google search has shown it's still unknown. I don't buy the 'culture' explanation, most people in the US and Europe see X as having a more negative connotation.

The only thing I can think of is they wanted to separate themselves from the standard "SNES" scheme from the competition, but again, I've never seen any official statements on the matter.

Cross is a shape, and goes along with the other shapes.

X is a letter, and goes along with other letters.

And "Cross, Circle, Triangle, and Square" looks better than "X, Circle, Triangle, and Square."

There's no Jew nailed to it, so it's not a cross you fucking pagan.

X symbolises an arrow headed away from you (the silhouette of the fletching) while O symbolises the point of an arrow headed towards you. The former would indicate progress, which might explain the inversion of the two for the west.

My stupid theory, anyway.
>>
X and square is more ergonomic.

SNES makes sense too because

A= accept
B= back

Most US releases used X to accept and Triangle to cancel. It wasn't reversed from the Japanese standard, it was completely different.

Do you have Stage IV Autism?
>>
>>2889661
Agreed, resting your thumb over then square and x buttons just feels more natural.
>>
>>2889672
Exactly, and because the Playstation uses the SNES layout the button where A was should always be the accept button.

>play MGS since MGS1 came out
>always associate O with yes and X with no
>MGS4 comes out
>swaps them around

That shit was like muscle memory to me at that point.
>>
>>2889880
It's because of SCEA's bullshit policies. If you play even the US version on a Japanese PS4 the circle for confirm, x to cancel controls are properly intact.
