I beat this back when I was a youngster and recently received it as a gift. Is it just because Im running this on a newer system or have the physics in this always been kind of buggy? I go to jump off certain slopes and stick to edges, get stuck on corners, particle geometry becomes unpassable etc. I really dont remember it being such a hassle to traverse obstacles or avoid structures and its getting me killed quite alot!
>>
>>2886340
Most likely the latter, but also possibly that they fucked shit up since. Almost definitely nothing to do with your new system. HL has always been buggy and it's gotten better and worse in various ways over the years. Even enemies are invincible during some animations. It's not a flawless game and if you think it was super duper when you were a kid, it's because you were a kid being too dump and amazed by novelty to objectively examine it.
>>
>>2886357
It really bogs my noggin as to how anyone who played deathmatch didn't die consistently from the environment alone.

>I go to jump off certain slopes and stick to edges, get stuck on corners

Make sure you didn't turn on "-dev" mode and play beyonf 100 fps. Goldsource engine needs to be capped to 100 fps for physics to work properly. Most noticeable when you're playing a surf map in CS 1.6.

I forgot to mention, OP posted an image of Half-Life Source, not the classic Half-Life. If your buddy gifted you the Source version then it's an entirely different beast.
>>
>>2886390
intriguing. I will have to look into this because I had framerate consistency issues before I went from a 550ti to a 760
>>
>>2886394
its the one with the round helmets and tie physics
>>
It's always been like that, and worse even. At least now you have autosaves if you're stuck, I remember in the first version there was no autosave, and I remember having to reload my save quite often due to getting stuck.

I also remember once I reached a point (just before the fight against the helicopter) where you have to fall down an edge of the coast and have to loose about 10hp; except I had less than 10 hp and had to restart the entire game because it was the only save I had.
>>
The game does have certain points where you can get stuck on the environment. Some turns in pipes and tunnels got me stuck like that multiple times if I was walking too close to the wall during a map transition.
If your game is the Source version, it does have some additional issues that didn't exist in the original game, though.

>a point (just before the fight against the helicopter) where you have to fall down an edge of the coast and have to loose about 10hp
I don't remember that. The only part where I can remember a fall like that is near the start of Power Up, when you fall from a large pipe onto a table that breaks and crushes a headcrab.

Oh boy I remember this. Not being able to move after a level transition, to me it happened ALL the time, even if I stood right in the middle of the corridor. This was particularly a pain for me because I had a pretty shitty computer when HL1 came out, and a loading time would take me almost 5 mins (I was a patient teenager when it came to video games...). So getting stuck at level transition would mean, wait 5 mins that the level loads, realize you're stuck so loading previous save and waiting 5 more mins, then moving forward to load new level again and wait 5 mins, again.
Between that and having to restart the game over half way through, it took me 5 days on an autumn holiday to beat the game for the first time

Do people still play this? Last time I checked the only servers with players were wierd rp servers.
>>
>>2886914
Meh depends on timezones due to EU and NA players but it´s more about the userbase having pretty much claimed the game as their own and act like pissy princesses if your playstyle is cheap. Guns are pretty much abandoned by now and kung fu is the only part that´s left. People join a server after you join it and that is why it looks so dead all the time as nobody wants to join an empty server.

Right, that's the source version and it sucks. Get the classic version. It doesn't have any of those problems you mentioned.

I recently bought the non-Source version and instantly regretted the decision because I thought that Source was supposed to be better, which I had assumed since it had been developed by Valve. Anyway, I'm glad to hear I have the better version.

Are there any recommended/essential mods? I don't mean extra quest mods or multiplayer mods or rebalance mods — I'm talking about the type of professional-grade, fan-made mods that you can find for Bethesda games, for example, where they patch up a lot of glitches and problems with the game. Like the mods where, after you install it, you come to regard the original game as less than 100% complete without the mod. Or the Quake 2 mod that gives you the Trent Reznor OST.

Valve made the Hi-Def pack that originally came with Blue Shift, but I think the Steam version of HL has it bundled with it as a checkbox in the settings. Then they made HL Source which changes mostly lighting effects, physics/ragdolls, stuff like that; it was mostly considered to be pretty half-assed and not worth bothering with. Some fans have made texture packs and such things. But currently the best "improved" version of HL is probably Black Mesa. It's not really /vr/ though, and it's still missing the ending chapters. If you feel like trying it, the free downloadable version of the game is mostly identical compared to the version they sell on Steam.

I'm not aware of HL fans creating the kinds of glitch fix mods that Bethesda fans have made. Most mods that I've played are new singleplayer campaigns. There are also a bunch of multiplayer mods that used to be popular, but don't know if they're still alive.

that genre of music really brought me back

it's funny to think that Patsy Cline and Big Band Swing etc are what make my grandpa nostalgic. For me it's gonna be Drowning Pool, Kid Rock and all those other terrible bands that'll make me stare off into the distance

HL isn't like shitty Bethesda games that get released when they're only half finished and the mod community has to work to make the game playable. You can install the official hi-def pack if you want higher resolution models for characters, enemies and weapons. Most mods focus on adding new single player campaigns. You should definitely get a copy of Jumbot 2.4 so you can fart around in HLDM, and there are some fantastic fanmade multiplayer maps out there.

lmao. The Matrix was the most important event in the history of video game mods
>>
>>2887408
Sure did have a massive impact but The Specialists have great depth and a high skill ceiling so it´s not just another fps game with slow motion.
>>
>>2886401
HL1 had round helmets. It was a feature of ATI cards and it chewed up framerate.
>>
>>2887408
Eh, not really. That style of mod has been around before the Matrix. AQ2 predates the matrix and went on to AHL which is basically the spiritual predecessor to TS and did most of what TS did before TS. TS added slow motion and some matrix elements, but was largely influenced by AHL and The Opera. The Matrix itself is influenced by the same source material to a degree, that being Hong Kong gun flicks.
>>
>>2887408
Here's a trailer for AHL. There were a couple of them, harder to find these days, especially since they used to be download links not youtube or anything since that didn't exist then. Most people were still on dialup for this shit.
You'll notice some similarities. But as much as I played the shit out of AHL when it was out, TS did most of the everything just that much better for gameplay. It's just a shame the sniper rifle was worse.

You don't need to get mods that "fix" the vanilla game like a Bethesda product. If you want to go down that route, install the high definition models pack which is already in the Options in the post-201X version of Half-Life.

Just get those sick ass single player total conversion modifications. Point of View, Cry of Fear, Afraid of Monsters, They Hunger, Poke646 and whatever else I totally forgot about. And of course get Sven Co-op, it is a quintessential choice as it's basically a co-op toybox suite that will give you virtually unlimited content and replay value.

Wow I just looked this up and I never knew Half-Life had this thing. Apparently ATI Truform is some polygon subdivide feature, it's like tessellation but Half-Life was a DX7 game. Couldn't find any images of it though.

It's not perfect as shown here. A lot of times it was just slap-dashed on in a generic manner.

Awesome mod. I had picked up Max Payne 3 for its multiplayer thinking it will the next bullettime based MP game. Boy was I wrong.
