Some people can't enjoy anything if it's not the genuine stuff.
>>
>>2882265
There's that whole issue of dying while you were too busy dreaming.
>>
>>2882265
Because it you weren't lucky enough for Link to wake up there, the Nightmares would have taken over and turned it into nightmare world. Which is presumably a fate worse than death, otherwise Link is the bad guy.

Speaking as someone who's had nightmares repeatedly where they are dreaming, know they are dreaming (the people in my dream tell me as much, though sometimes a little "persuasion" is needed), and keep waking up to yet another dream, I can tell you it's horrifying. The human mind simply cannot cope on some primal level with the threat of fundamental reality not being a given. I've nearly lost it upon waking once or twice because it took me a few minutes to calm down and verify- yes, this is real...things are coherent and consistent now...calm down...

To be completely honest, this is one reason Link's Awakening resonated so strongly with me.

"known as The Legend of Zelda: Dream Island in Japan"

>>2882309
I thought the monsters weren't hostile in general until Link stranded on the island and threatend their very existence.
>>
>>2882639
But didn't the island not exist until link dreamed it up? Or is this actually some shared dreaming shit? Are the people of koholint a bunch of people in comas or something?
>>
It's escapism, can't you see? It's not healthy!
>>
>>2882713

The dream is that of the Wind Fish. Link was pulled into the dream (maybe due to being within vicinity of where the Wind Fish sleeps) after his ship was destroyed and he was rendered unconscious, then Link's memories began to influence the dream environment and the characters who appeared therein. So at this point, it's a merging of both the Wind Fish's and Link's consciousnesses.

None of the characters in the dream are real, unless maybe their consciousnesses are real only in the sense that they co-exist in the Wind Fish's mind as independent sentients.
>>
>>2882713

Shared dreaming between Link, the Windfish, and the Nightmare Dethl. But here's the thing: the Windfish is the being literally generating the world. He can't therefore be physically present within it, and so he is represented by his avatar the owl.

>>2882724

Everything in the dream world is a sentient spawned out of the subconscious of Link, the Windfish, and whatever the fuck Dethl _really_ is. They are the only three "real" beings, in that sense.

>>2882639

>The Legend of Zelda: Dream Island

Thank you. That clears that up then.

>I thought the monsters weren't hostile in general until Link stranded on the island and threatend their very existence.

No, they were already a nuisance. They simply got much more aggressive after Dethl realized Link was crashing his dreamworld he wanted to run amok in.

>>2882359

Keep in mind Link waking up ended the very existence of quite a few sentient beings. So yes, the case can be made.
>>
>>2882639
>I thought the monsters weren't hostile in general until Link stranded on the island and threatend their very existence.
The final boss says:
"We were born of nightmares... To take over this world, we made the Wind Fish sleep endlessly! If the Wind Fish doesn't wake up, this island will never disappear! We would have been masters of this place... But you had to come here and disrupt our plans! Heh heh! You can never defeat us!!! Let's rumble!"

And there's no evidence for Link having any kind of reality warping powers. So probably the monsters only stepped up their plans because they knew Link was a threat, and they would have got round to it eventually even if he didn't show up.

That line sounds really shitty out of context, but it's pretty much the best Marche could have come up with. I mean, Newt was already being a selfish cunt by keeping everyone there at others' expense, so an appeal on the "don't be a douche" front would have gone nowhere.

advantages of dx
>color
>additional 'dungeon' that makes use of this with the reward being a colored tunic that either raises atk or def
>picture moments that are kind of fun
disadvantages
>you have to read the messages for every piece of power/guardian acorn/wow this looks pretty heavy! without being able to cancel the message as it scrolls
>you can't 100% and no death run due to not being able to collect all pictures without dying
(thief event requires you die and be called thief for the remainder of the game)

I prefer the original because I don't see the real benefit in the extra dungeon for a very easy game that doesn't require it as the difficulty doesn't change. LA DX was my first Zelda but having the option to 'b' out of those messages is very beneficial because you'll see them at least a few times regardless of how much you avoid them.

I do however miss the pictures because they were fun.

Not at all, if you just steal and don't go back into the shop you won't die. You'll be called THIEF by NPCs, but you are not required to die. Just steal right before entering the Wind Fish's Egg after buying everything you need so you don't have to go back into the shop.

I guess the DX version is overall the "definitive" version so people who never played it before should go with that for the extras.
But I personally like the original monochrome myself, the color version feels weird, maybe because that's now how I imagined how the game would look in color, and sometimes the colors make the tiles stand out too much.
And in a way, the monochrome look has a sort of "dreamy" or surreal feel which I think fits the game theme very well.

Someone should do a hack where the whole game is monochrome except for the opening cutscene and the ending sequence.

>And in a way, the monochrome look has a sort of "dreamy" or surreal feel which I think fits the game theme very well.

Mostly this, but I also feel like the DX extras were mostly just tacked on. I mean, the dungeon was nice and all, but it felt kinda out of place, and the photographs didn't really add a lot.
Admittedly, a lot of my earliest gaming memories come from LA monochrome, so that might be the nostalgia goggles.

I grew up with the DX version on a GBC. (I say this so you know it's not just nostalgia speaking)

These days I prefer the DMG version. Both versions look good, but the DMG version is even more impressive since it manages to pull off said looking good with only 4 shades of green.

The sound is great on my OG gameboy, but the one thing I'm *not* nostalgic about is the awful sample-and-hold blur. I actually like it best played through Lameboy on my DS. I don't savescum but it is nice to be able to flip it shut for sleep mode when you need to attend to something urgent or just do quicksave/quickloads so you can play through the game in 5 minute poop-breaks without having to backtrack each time you turn it on.

If you choose the original LA, my opinion is that you should make sure to play or emulate on a system that has the proper green palette. Likewise, DX should be played on a color system. You can mix and match but it won't be *quite* as good of an experience (original version fake colorizes badly/miss out on some content in DX version).
>>
>>2886175
I really like the old gameboy blur. Gives it more dreamlike visuals.

I get that you were joking, but I actually really like the english title, it's ambiguous because you don't know you're in a dream until you reach the ruins, I think.
The word "awakening" could also be taken as an enlightenment awakening and not in the literal sense. The japanese title spoils the fact that you're in a dream from the get go.
