It was a launch title. That means tons of copies available.
>>
I've always wanted a copy of this game for no other reason than to see Nester again.

I could never get into it even though I really liked the rocketman-missions. The rest was just too uninteresting for me, but I really liked the prequel.

Love this game.

As a kid I loved it, but it was too hard for me, I didn't have the patience required. I just fucked around with the gyrocopter, firing missiles to the twin towers and the whale.

I picked this game again as an adult and actually got into it a lot, the controls are amazing and it has the perfect balance between arcade gameplay and real simulation.
I got gold medals and perfect 100pts score in all but one mission (one of the cannon ones)

This game is so relaxing. It's hard to explain, but the scenery looks amazing to me for some reason. It might just be the charm of early 3D, but I love the way everything looks. Of course, the soundtrack is top notch, but that goes without saying. All in all, it's a severly underlooked game and series.

Speaking of which, was the newest installment any good?
>>
>>2875631
Could never pass second license, and I really wanted to try out the helicopter mission.
>>
>>2875394

I always played as Lark because I was a huge Nintendo Power fan as a kid and he's pretty much Nester with a name change. I wonder if he was officially in any other Nintendo games.

My favorite mode was the Jumble Hopper because you could pretty much free-roam each map as you pleased. But fuck it was hard to unlock, I don't know if I'd have the patience to do it now. I'd probably get stuck on the title screen fapping to Robin like I did as a teen.

op here, I got Resort for christmas, so far it's ok, and so far it seems there's only three vehicles.
It's still kind of difficult to get a perfect score and there's still a lot of locations to explore, downside is that there's only one item and nintendo for some reason did away with the characters from the first two.

64 is still my favorite of the games, but the islands in SNES are cool and Resort is worth playing for the Pedal Glider alone.

>>2874909
Dan Hess seems cool.

>>2875884
Resort's mission design and music is awesome, definitely worth it despite the Wii Sports Resort assets making for a repetitive background.

You can also get crafty and land the Gyrocopter in many different places rather than platforming everywhere. Little States is perfect for Gyrocopter runs; still, you have Birdman for a reason.

I always thought Paradigm did the characters, and that Ibis and Goose were supposed to reflect the staff's demographic (being a North Texas developer with some Asian employees). Good to know that's just headcanon.

Doesn't matter now that we know they're spitball designs from Nintendo. I still want them back if a new game comes out, plus side missions that significantly change based on who you pick (given weight + new abilities?).
>>
>>2877496
yeah, I suppose it's kind of bizarre that nintendo thinks that miis are better than solid and unique character designs.

It doesn't matter, it's not as if nintendo was shooting for some awe inspiring memorable game/tech demo/flight sim like the first two

Pilotwings (SNES and N64) was one of those titles where I couldn't have nostalgia for it, since I played both of them decades after release and when I got older, yet I feel very sentimental playing either.

I suppose it's something about both being launch titles, making as much as they can out of an unexplored system, and being such a lighthearted and different game. I find both visually very well done.

I can't get the same feeling about the new one though, I'm sure it's a fine game but it just seems to lack soul.

>>2874909
I frequently cite this as one of the comfiest themes I could ever imagine. Also yes the composer seems like a cool guy.
>>
>>2874796
Why does Mario 64 cost 3 times as much then?
>>
>>2882190

Probably because PW is a much less popular series.
But if it's so cheap, then that's good, anyone who owns a N64 must own this game, since I don't think it would feel as good playing it with any other controller than the N64 one, the 3D stick's precision really makes a difference especially on hang glider missions.

>>2882164
I have yet to play the SNES game, although I've heard music from it and it's really nice.
I bought PW64 back in release and when I play it or listen to its music it brings me back to that summer of 1996 instantly.
>>
>>2882164
I doubt it has anything to do with being launch titles. I really don't get why people are so fast to pin their feelings towards a game to some incidental facts totally independent of the game itself.

A good game is a good game. It has nothing to do with when it was released or an unexplored system. How are those things going to drastically change your feeling towards a game? Give yourself more credit.

it was still a world record by like 40 seconds after the time finish correction

All three Pilotwings are tops. The 3DS one is lacking in individual charm compared to the other two but it's still a comfy game with great music and tight gameplay. It was also a launch title, come to think of it.

I wish Nintendo would throw PW64 on the Virtual Console. Haven't had an N64 for years and don't have anything else to emulate it on really.
>>
>>2875884
Wasn't really overlooked... You had this and Mario 64, you had nothing else.
>>
>>2888002

This is true, but Super Mario 64 was strong enough to overshadow PW64, and a few weeks/months after the console release, other popular games released like Mortal Kombat Trilogy, KI Gold, Wave Race 64, Cruisin' USA, Shadows of the Empire. PW64 being a simulation game didn't get enough attention I guess, but I still think it's considered a classic series, it's not obscure, just not popular either.
>>
Reminds me when I got this game and SM64 on my birthday in early 1997.

I honesty played and enjoyed this game more than SM64. The music, gameplay, and openness was wonderful. Also I was really into flight games at the time, so it was right up my alley.

Going into non-/vr/ territory, but I wish they had put a Pilotwings 64 character in Sm4sh. 64 was the only one ignored in the stage and it's the only one in the series that has actual characters to play as instead of "you".

Maybe 5mash will provide.

Would be a cool representative. Probably would have one of if not the best recovery abilities in the game and probably weak strength wise but a lot of diverse abilities. Final smash I'm sure would be the SNES helicopter with missles or Gyrocopter w/ missles because it's an iconic vehicle.

lol, I'm not sure the cross would stand out that much while you're doing missions. That kind of stuff adds mystery to the in-game environments. A new Pilotwings game ought to expand on 64's approach by having a few ludicrously-detailed islands you can explore (a la Wuhu but less generic) during missions/free flight.
