So I just watched "Get Lamp" and now I want to try a text adventure, where do I start? I played Zork on a whim once and enjoyed it till I got stuck in what I think was hell, should I just go back and give Zork a second try or is there a better starting point?

Zork is great but medium hard. I enjoyed the Monty Python and the Holy Grail one it's easy.

I recommend this (which is on-topic, Z-machine platform dates back to 1979, and this specific z8 version is from 1995):

In general any Annual IF Competition winner is worth playing, see:

I like the TADS era of games, maybe check out "The Legend Lives!"

Am I literally autistic? I can't get past the first screen, am I thinking about this one wrong?

Wait, so I used "Look" like 5 times and the 5th time somthing came up, is this par for the course with these things?

Yes. These games work on states so doing x a certain number of times or doing a certain sequence of commands puts it in a particular state. I remember a few cases where you could get through a maze (forest, cave, whatever) by entering the correct sequence of commands irregardless of whatever position you would have thought you were in if it were a tile based game.

Alright well at least now I know, got a ways in, still haven't caught the pig but I am enjoying it, though the parser isn't as tight as Zork's was. Anything else I should know, I know these all assume usually that you already are into these things and treat you as such.

Alright, question time. I peeked at the walktrhough like a little bitch and realized that "x" was a different command from "look" what does it do exactly and why is it 'x'
>>
>>2874026

I don't know that specific game

in Inform, "x" usually means "examine" and tends to have an object:
> x butt
"The butt is delightfully round."

whereas "look" is just for like looking around:
> look
"You are in a buttzone. There is a writing desk nearby. On the desk is a lamp. Near the desk, you see a butt."

so like try using the different commands on their own and with objects and with that sort of thing in mind, maybe it'll become clearer?

Ah, that makes sense, thanks. I also realized that I missed some things by reading too fast.
