>MJ
>Jetzons
>SHAMELESS COPYING
>kiddly diddling
>the last good sonic soundtrack besides sonic CD
>>
>>2870983
I'd like to start by saying sonic 3 has the best soundtrack of any game from the 16 bit era besides streets of rage
>>
>>2870983
MJ quit before the child abuse accusations began, he didn't like the way his voice sounded when he sampled it on the Yamaha's sound chip.
>>
Lava reef act 1 and hydrocortisone act 2 flying battery act 2
>>
>>2870983
MJ didnt really do shit. His staff including Brad Buxer composed the music. What I really want to hear are the high quality demos they recorded before converting it for genesis.
>>2870995
I never understood why MJ was fine with moonwalker on genesis which had shittier sound quality but is quoted saying he disliked the sonic 3 sound.
>>
>>2871031
Mother fucker. Exactly what I was going to post. But yeah, this.
>>
>>2871034

All I can guess is "contractual obligations"
>>
>>2871034
MJ didn't work on the Moonwalker Genesis music. Also I don't think any of the music from that game sampled his songs like 3&K did, like Speed Demon's "GO".

Also, they had to rip his music Sega wrongfully put in the Genesis S3&K from the Windows version or else they could've gotten sued by MJ.
>>
>>2870983
>Jetzons
Not actually a copy, it was composed by the same guy
>>
>>2870983
>the last good sonic soundtrack besides sonic CD
Come on man, not even the last good Sonic soundtrack on the Genesis.

>>
>>2871087
Yeah, say what you want about the game itself, but it had an exceptional soundtrack.
>>
>>2871079
moonwalker genesis samples his voice so did they just reuse the recording from the arcade version? Sonic 3 PC also confuses me because they keep all the original songs in later ports and sega collections.
>>
>>2871112
maybe Sega owned the rights to the original music, but couldn't reproduce it in other formats, like MIDI, without MJ's consent? who knows
>>
>>2870983
great soundtrack

However, the information surrounding a lot of the composers is hard to believe unless you're one of those people that goes around mass emailing the musicians. That aspect of this contributes to that whole "I don't really know what to believe"

sometimes the proof isn't open to the public and Sega doesn't like to talk about this
>>
>>2870983
Flying Battery and Lava Reef for life.
>>
>>2870983
>the last good Sonic soundtrack besides sonic CD
Whatever, nostalgiafaggot. Sorry everyone else on the face of the planet disagrees with you. Also, Sonic CD came out a year before 3&K.
>>
>>2871034
>What I really want to hear are the high quality demos they recorded before converting it for genesis.

These are the closest renditions you can get, if you're interested. I don't think the extensions were a part of the original demos though.

Pretty sure, on top of this, nobody associated with MJ worked on the S&K tracks.
>>
>the last good sonic soundtrack besides sonic CD

This is bullshit. Sonic Generations had a good soundtrack. Fuck, even Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games has a phenomenal soundtrack.
>>
>>2871084
What do you mean by this?
>>
>>2871449
>>2871034
>MJ didnt really do shit. His staff including Brad Buxer composed the music
But wait, what about the end credits theme? It literally is a Genesis rendition of one of his actual songs, I can't think of the name. Or are you saying he did nothing other than create the original song, then just had his staff convert it to the Genesis?
>>
>>2873354
Are you talking about the mj track: "Stranger in Moscow"?
>>
>>2873392
Yes, that.
>>
>>2873354
>But wait, what about the end credits theme?
Isn't that a medley?
>>
>the last good sonic soundtrack besides sonic CD

Nigga I've barely played Sonic post-Genesis and I can give you about 10 examples of how wrong you are. Soundtrack is literally the one thing Sonic Team can't fuck up.
>>
>>2871395

I guess it's close to what they would have sounded like (mid 90s production and all) but as none of the arrangers or performers were on the game's staff it's silly to think of it as anything but an arrange album.

There not being any master versions made available is especially strange considering the composition team was 90% western and mostly still active, you'd think someone would have made a quick soundcloud upload or something by now. it's got to be a SEGA thing.
>>
>>2873437
Listen "Boss The Boss", hear the arpeggios at 1:00? They were also on the PC release of S3&K, which has notoriously inaccurate midi arrangements, while you can hear in most tracks like Flying Battery and the special stages, Akinori Minami's tracks follow the game's original score real close (even if Sky Sanctuary sounds subpar for some unknown reason). This could hint that the arpeggio came from the original master and was removed from the Genesis downgrade for whatever reason.

What I'm saying is if there were any masters at all, Minami is really likely to have worked with those when making his own rearrangements, and this can be expanded to his instrument patch selection.
>>
>>2871034
MJ probably thought he could do a better job than Hiroshi Kubota, then realized the limitations of the YM2612 and decided to give up.

>>2873354
Pretty sure the miniboss/Knuckles theme is confirmed to be his, you can even hear his sampled voice in it. Also it's safe to assume the music that got replaced in the Windows Sonic 3 port was also composed by MJ/Buxor.
>>
>>2873532
Yeah and I don't care what anyone says, there's no way Launch Base Zone isn't his too.
>>
>>2873536

Pick any Sonic game. Any.
Even Sonic 06, which was garbage, has a great soundtrack.

Sonic R.
>>
>>2873752
This.
>>
>>2873667

>I bet he doesn't even roll around at the speed of sound.
>>
>>2873667
All of them except Shadow, dumbass, but even that has some awesome tracks here and there. Fun fact: Sonic CD's Japanese used to be my favorite until I discovered SA1.
>how to spot someone who has never even touched a Modern Sonic game in their life, assumes that they all have generic rock-and-techno soundtracks, and thinks their opinion on this shit is somehow valid in the slightest
>>
>>2873880
>someone who has ever even touched a modern Sonic game in their life thinking their opinion on Sonic in general is somehow still valid in the slightest
>>
Post 4th gen Sonic music ain't bad, but nothing topped Masato Nakamura's soundtracks for me.

I like the Sonic Adventure music in a sort of silly, guilty pleasure way, whereas I genuinely enjoy Sonic 1, 2, 3&K music without an ounce of guilt, it's legit great stuff. I like 1 and 2's music the most, but MJ's staff music on 3&K is also good, especially Hydrocity and Lava Reef.
>>
>>2873915
Pretty sure MJ had nothing to do with Lava Reef or the other &Knuckles tracks. Just Sonic 3.
>>
>replaying some stages to find shortcuts
>repeat Carnival Night Act2
>realize you can skip a bunch of shit because I was playing around as Super Sonic
>now I can do that act2 around 3 minutes and half as normal Sonic instead of the usual 7+minutes I would waste 10 years ago
It's amazing how I still find some hidden boxes on awkward places, like on Sky Sanctuary there is an extra life box right after a "tower" at the left side of the stage after 2nd mini-boss.
>>
>>2873908
You only proved his point. Good job, anon.
>>
>>2873880
>>2873915
I can enjoy some tracks of Adventure but honestly most of them just turn into backround noise, a lot of people like Red Mountains track, I find it better than most but not exceptional.

Actually liking it more than CD (Japan) though? Get the fuck out man, seriously. What's wrong with you? People have different tastes and shit but fuck man, no way.

Unrelated, does anyone know where I can instrumental versions of Knuckle's songs from Adventure 1/2? I love the tunes but the lyric induce so much cringe I'm afraid I'll get secondhand autism.
>>
>>2871031
>flying battery act 2
Fucked it.

Act 1 is miles fucking better. That guitar solo.
>>
>>2871079
>they had to rip his music Sega wrongfully put in the Genesis S3&K from the Windows version or else they could've gotten sued by MJ.
You're too right they did
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLuQZ4Gnjkc
>>
>>2873424
Even Sonic 06 was praised for the soundtrack
>>
>>2876213
>Actually liking it more than CD (Japan) though? Get the fuck out man, seriously. What's wrong with you? People have different tastes and shit but fuck man, no way.
Even though everyone fucking loves SA1's soundtrack and it generally gets nothing but incessant praise. If you're such an insecure bitch that you freak out over an opposing opinion, I don't think I'M the one who needs to get the fuck out here.
>>
>>2876430
Sonic R was praised for memorable soundtrack too
>>
>>2873984
yup, he was already gone by the time S&K rolled around

Howard Drossin often gets the credit, however he did very little
>>
>>2876868
But Sonic 06's soundtrack was actually good. Sonic R's soundtrack isn't terrible either, it's just weird and unfitting for a racing game.
>>
>>2873354
Brad Buxer also composed Stranger in Moscow. MJ has the final decision on the song but other people probably write most of his music for him.
>>
>>2877005
>Sonic R's soundtrack isn't terrible either, it's just weird and unfitting for a racing game.
I listened to it because of UK Resistance (home of "blue sky in games") and their Richard Jacques fanboyism. I actually like Can You Feel The Sunshine when it's pitched up enough so it sounds like sort of pseudo happy hardcore.
>>
>the last good sonic soundtrack besides sonic CD

The Sonic 3D Blast soundtrack is pretty based on both 16-bit and 32-bit systems.

Saturn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDMN8XKs1z0

Woah calm down faggot, it was intended as an "over-the-top I disagree" joke. I guess Sega-shitpost anon has put everyone in these threads on high alert or something.

I just meant while I can enjoy SA, I find CD so much better. I really can't understand the praise for it, but hey, that happens with shit, whatyagunnado?
>>
>>2877514
A shitload of variety in terms of genres, extremely good composition, songs that fit their levels flawlessly, and a distinctly-"SA1" vibe. Some of these songs may or may not take time to grow on you to become awesome, because video game soundtracks are just like that for some reason, but you're not going to regret listening to any of these. Also, only about four songs in the game have that saxophone in them, and I'm posting three, so don't think that SA1 has too much of it.

>Theme of Gamma
Solid 8/10. Loved it when I played the game, listening to it alone, not as great.
>Mt. Red Symbol of Thrill
Everyone loves this one, I just it okay. I feel the guitars that come in halfway sort of rune it.
>Crazy Robo
Fuck forget this one, 11/10 that intro. I also love how it flows off of Theme of Gamma. The saxophones remind of Sonic CD.
>Be Cool, Be Wild and Be Groovy
Pretty much same as Mt Red.
>Tricky Maze
Ambience 10/10... General music, eh.
>At Dawn
Okay. I dunno, generally inoffensive.
>Red Hot Skull
See whenever every says they liked Mt. Red, I though the meant this one. It's pretty good... I should play the game again, this level sorta disappeared from my memories.
>Mechanical Resonance
Funky as fuck, love this one, especially the guitar solo. One of the few I downloaded the OST for.
>Egg Carrier A Song That Keeps Us On the Move
Again it was great ambience, good but it gets a little tedious after awhile.
>Join Us 4 Happy Time
Pretty much like Egg Carrier.
>General Offensive
One of the few good fast songs. The Synth-ish thing is dope as fuck though.

These are all fine, I guess when I listen to the full OST there aren't many as fast songs as I have come to love from Sonic. I could listen to these but give me any one of the Bad Future Tracks from Sonic CD and I'm having a blast.

One of my favourite tracks from Adventure though, and feel free to give me a load of shit, after all these are just opinions is this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkAFpbL2_FM

Playing the game I liked it, then it annoyed me (just because of how long the segment goes for) but eventually I started to love it, and it's been stuck in my head for good while.
>>
>>2878005
The reason Gamma's theme sounds better in-game is because it's quieter. Turning the volume down actually makes songs sound different.
>>
>>2878028
Also, I mean around this level of volume: -|----
>>
>>2877903

So which Knuckles theme is better, 3 or 3&K?
Also, why was the fucking invincibility music so repetitive in 3&K vs 3?
>>
>>2882493
Angel Island is good though. I hate the Carnival Night music mostly because that level is annoying.
>>
>>2882939
3&K theme is better and more interesting while 3 is just drums. 3 does have better super sanic muisc.
>>
>>2882493
>Japanese Folk Music

I'm trying to remember... did Knuckles have a different song in S&K than on 3? I only remember the music when he appears on 3, and I can't seem to find any sort of japanese folk music vibe about it
>>
just glancing at that title screen pic made me insta-nostalgia. It's so vibrant ant satisfying. My first 16bit game.
>>
>>2883000
I never beat Sonic 3 as a kid because I couldn't figure out how to use the D-pad to move the barrels.

It wasn't until over a decade later that I got the bright idea to just look up the answer on gamefaqs.
>>
>>2883259
I only remember having trouble with the barrel for a few minutes. I dont like the level design being a clusterfuck of bumpers, balloons and underwater parts. Its just terrible.
>>
>>2883005
Yes he did, and apparently it was done by Howard Drossin, which wasn't admittedly very good with Japanese-style songs. I guess folk's a different matter doe.
>>
>>2876254
dis nigga here knows his shit
>>
>>2883332

Oh right, now I listened to it and totally remember that song, for some reason I couldn't remember it, only the S3 one.

I guess I can sort of see how it could pass as japanese-y, but it always struck me as a more tropical/surfer thing rather than japanese.
>>
>>2883367
Speaking of surf music, why haven't we ever had a boardwalk level with surf rock playing? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHfRLg_JDsc

Hm, maybe because we've never had, it makes me love the surf-rocky tune a boss in the not retro fangame Sonic Before the Sequel (let it get to the solo)
