I assume you've played Skies of Arcadia. If you liked that (and you should!) you should check out Panzer Dragoon Saga. Even though it's by a different team it feels like a proto-Skies in a lot of ways (namely the flying around and the aerial combat).

FF8 plays out like a fucking checklist of how not to make an RPG. It's one of those games that made JRPGs from sprawling adventures with exploration and fun into tedious, wordy slogs with shitty, convoluted plots and anime archetypes of unlikable characters. Although I suppose that has become an important subset of the JRPG legacy.

I think some of it is purely that it wasn't released in America at the same time as the others and so they have less nostalgia for it.
