Previous thread - >>2842270

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

I have pic related in my garage, It works.
Can they be used as a standalone monitor? (for my dreamcast)
>>
>>2854005
Sadly, no, it cannot.

Technically, if you were able to design a controller board for the tube and remove the entire computer from it, sure. But that's a lot of work and I can't claim to know how to do it.

I sympathize, though. I'll take that mac off you if you don't want it and you're nearby :)
>>
>>2854023
I'm one of two Irish anons on the whole of /vr/

anyways I looked it up and you can actually do it by taking a cable away that goes from the motherboard to the vga port , but my model just had the vga port directly attached to the mobo

would've been a really cool monitor for my dreamcast
>>
>>2854053
Damn. I'm on the wrong side of the pond (and I don't mean I'm in England when I say that).

Good luck to you, though! And you can at least play some games like quake if you make that boot linux.

>Blur is roughly constant per unit screen area. Bigger pixels means less blur per pixel. Smaller pixels mean more blur per pixel. Line doubling means pixels 4 times as big as the smallest pixels the display is designed for, so of course they will be sharp. Which is what mode 13h games looked like.

What do you guys make of this post? The argument here is: how line doubling in 13h DOS games using a VGA monitor prevented dithering from being blurred into a solid tint.

Here's my Ikegami. Its a bit sharper than a tv, but not a pvm.
>>
is there any significant difference between PVMs and BVMs and are there any other comparable CRTs made by other brands that might not be as well known?

I got a 14 inch PVM but the degaussing coil in it is fucked up beyond all repair, and it got damaged a lot in transit, so I have these cables that are going unused.

>>
>>2854951
Ikegami, Olympus branded trinitrons (pvms), and a bunch of odd balls mostly w out rgb inputs. Go to ebay, and search crt monitor and sort by date listed. You'll see some interesting stuff. Or just buy a tv with scart or component+svid if you don't need a razor sharp image.
>>
do most silver 16:9 2000's (vague i know) TV's have component inputs ?
>>
>>2855064
maybe, just keep in mind if they do that doesn't mean they do 480p over component, could be 480i max
>>
>>2855064
>16:9
Probably a digital tv. Which means you don't want it anyway.
>>
>>2854931
As the 20L5 owner everyone's flaming on, I also own a PVM-1944Q which is not 480p but performs just fine for older consoles. I am happy that I have an 'L5, but I would not say that it is a necessity. I didn't even know what PVM I was getting until I arrived at the place I picked it up. It's a nice monitor and I wouldn't trade it because it's awesome, but using a separate VGA monitor is a fine alternative.
>>2854965
The built-in speaker is really quiet and has terrible lows and highs. I have 3 broadcast monitors total and the 'L5's speaker is the worst of the lot. It's not a reason to buy one.

Despite the beauty of the shadow mask itself, I can tell you're using either NESRGB with a horrible palette setting, or a playchoice-10 PPU. That palette is really, really bad if you're going for authenticity. For comparison, here's native composite video.

>>2855396
Yeah, stay away from the rubber cup on the picture tube and the flyback transformer on the PCB below that the wire runs to. Reach around it, not over it.

Don't hold something metal with your free hand while poking inside the set or you're grounding yourself and electricity could go in one arm, through your heart, and out the other.

(I successfully fixed convergence on my set, btw. Wasn't that hard - just be careful.)

Kya, you still messing around with your RX-100? Did you ever settle on optimal settings for it?

This is the best pic of my CRT I've ever been able to take with mine. Most of my other shots are a lot more mediocre, and I can't seem to replicate what I did to make this one come out this good.
>>
>>2854965
My 20M4U has a built in speaker. It's decent, and convenient, but I can't imagine actually using it exclusively, especially when it's so cheap/easy to get an old stereo receiver and a set of nice bookshelf speakers on craigslist or ebay and make it sound 1000 times better. Granted, some people might not have the room for that, or even care about sound, but it seems odd to me to care so much about the graphics to hunt down a PVM, but not give a shit about the sound.
>>
>>2855435
I leave it in manual mode, and just switch stuff around until it looks decent.
f/stop varies by what I'm doing, ISO is anywhere from |80| to 400 depending on the shot, shutter usually stays at either 30 or 60 with 60 being preferable.
Most stuff is taken with the white balance set to the color temp option set to 9300k.
Videos tend to follow the same, with f/stop being set a bit higher than it would for the equivalent photo, and ISO usually being 400 or 800.

tl;dr: Not really.

>>2855501
There are also people that like to use headphones. Probably a really nice match for 8 and 14'' sets.

To stay on-topic, here is a shot from my Ikegami TM20-17R.
>>
>>2855524
I agree, but appreciation of this sort of visual fidelity is already such an acquired taste. My friends are baffled as to why I keep a big, heavy CRT around. They are entirely oblivious to the fact that old consoles actually do look good if you display them in their native resolution. Most of them tried hooking their SNES or N64 up to their flatscreens with composite and said "Jeez, I forgot how shitty these old games looked".

But anyway, yeah. All my friends upgraded to HD/flatscreen TVs long before I did. They probably thought I was just jealous, but the first thing I noticed on ALL of them was that they sounded terrible. I didn't see the purpose of spending 800 bucks on a flat screen to get your crisp, 1080p image, but have a sound system made out of drive-thru speakers.

Yes; fries are delicious. I get ass-pained when someone tries to brag about having great sound when he lets his speakers fall apart. I'm not knocking his ability to re-foam a woofer; shit has always looked like a pain in the ass and I would be hard pressed to do so myself and not just replace the damn things outright, so good for him, seriously. But you don't sit there and talk to me about 'ruining the sound' when he's already not accounting for the fact that his other cracked surrounds are compromising the box (these things don't appear to be ported and nothing I can find about the mids suggest they are individually sealed) not to mention the status of the likely old, dry caps in the crossover network and the old, likely oxidised and poorly functioning L-pads on the front. My speakers looked gorgeous but they honestly sounded like shit until I got up the nerve to rip them apart and replace/recondition/restuff all the ~40 year old internals.

I mad.

on a more serious note where would you go to find replacement speakers for bookshelf/floorstanding boxes? I only ever knew of buying car audio speakers outside of prebuilt boxes.
>>
And as the manual pretty much stated the BVM-1911 doesnt support 480p so now i have 2 480i sets which is nice albeit a tad unnecessary.
Anyone have any solutions for 480p off hand? Preferably an EDTV because I cant find a professional level monitor that maxes at 480p theyre either 480i or HD capable.

>>2857762
>Anyone have any solutions for 480p off hand?
PC monitor and a transcoder if you want component support?
>>
>>2857780
Have a transcoder and monitor, it works but was hoping for a direct connect to the monitor solution.

The transcoder I have im not a huge fan of and any decent ones are pretty pricey. And trying to find a simple no settings straight transcoder that isnt discontinued seems all but impossible. All the ones I find anymore have image settings and/or resolution settings I dont want any of that extra circuitry involved.
>>
>>2853901
If you don't mind me asking, what transcoder do you currently have?

The Key Digital KD-CTCA3 I bought a few weeks back seems to work wonderfully, and is |JUST| a transcoder. The only user controllable things on it are a few dip switches for switching between how you want your sync information to come out.

I can't speak directly on the quality of it, but I see an auction on ebay right now for it's predecessor, the KD-CTCA2. Admittedly, it doesn't have a power supply and requires a bit more manual adjustment for different resolutions, but you can't argue too much for $14 shipped; And that's if they don't accept a best offer.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/201445653939

http://keydigital.com/items.asp?ItemCode=KDPS5V1A&Company=KEY for the official power supply; Shouldn't be difficult at all finding one to match it.

I just have the Monoprice YPbPr to VGA transcoder. What I dont like is it has brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc. Settings as well as a limited selection of output resolutions. Which is in effect scaling the image.

Yeah, I can see that being a bother. Literally all this thing is doing is changing color spaces and processing sync, be it either to RGsB, RGBS, or RGBHV.

I've only had a chance to use it on my Megaview, which is seemingly fine with those resolutions as it is, but if you'll give me a few, I'll connect my GC and PS2 up to a PC monitor and see how it deals.

The Megaview did need me to manually adjust the vertical size to play well with 720p/1080i, but once that was done, it looked absolutely wonderful. Standard 4:3 480p didn't need any real adjustments at all >>2855691

Only things worth doing on the internet are getting mad about stupid shit and fapping. Anyway, I went with Parts-Express when I bought up all my stuff. They do have a mix of expensive audiophile bullshit and cheap serviceable components, so do some homework about what you're trying to do before you commit to anything. As for replacing individual components, you're likely not going to need/want to swap out components on basic 2/3-way speakers that come with a receiver unless you're particularly attached to the look, or the other internals are known to be of good quality. You'd probably be better off building a new set from scratch or a kit, or just buying one of their generic bookshelf sets. Most pre-built speakers that aren't expensive brand-names or separately-sold monsters like his or mine have little to no crossover networks to speak of; usually just a single capacitor between the mid/woofer and tweeter. It isn't to say they're necessarily shit, but they could definitely be engineered better and it may not be worth the time/effort/money to fix them up.

tl;dr literally almost any alternative audio solution is better than built in speakers in TVs/PVMs/Monitors and what you already have is probably perfectly serviceable unless it's actually fucked, but check out that site if you really want look around. And do some reading on speaker theory.
>>
>>2857867
Yeah my worry is with a straight transcoder the monitor may not like a 16:9 480/720/1080p signal.

But without owning one and testing it I cant be sure.

>>2857869
Thanks for the info. I was just curious to be honest. My father has an old set of kenwood floor speakers and had the woofers replaced on it back in the day (ie. 15 years ago maybe) and thats the only time ive seen replacement speakers installed. Instead of outright buying a whole new set.

>Yeah my worry is with a straight transcoder the monitor may not like a 16:9 480/720/1080p signal.
I will say, 1080p does do some weird shit with both the Megaview and my Sony PC CRT; I can't get the latter to accept it properly, and you get some really strange shit going on at the refresh it will accept it at ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfY5DKt2hps ) and while the former will technically sync and display a 1080p signal, it sure as hell doesn't like it, and you get wild artifacting all over the place along with the image being dark and distorted.
I haven't had a chance to try 1440x1080, so it may just be a problem with the horizontal resolution.
1280x720 is fine on both monitors, aside from getting the aspect ratio right.
I honestly can't remember if the Splatoon (and Wind Waker HD) photos I took were of it running in 720p or 1080i, but both looked absolutely fine on it.

Did some fucking around with the Gamecube, which the monitor saw as a 640x480 signal. I put a bit of video together, but it'll be a little while before it's processed and all that: https://youtu.be/UiY60QotxMU

Might move the PS3 over and try messing around with it in a bit to see how it handles 720p/1080i (and maybe p).

Serious question, what are you going to replace the power board with? if all you're going to do id add jacks to the back, you can just cut off the area behind the voltage regulator, leaving enough space for the/a repalcement heat sink).

You know, just maybe, and try to think about this for a moment:

There are people out there who don't like the concept of permanently damaging their console's shell (a finite resource, mind you) to add additional video outputs that already exist on the multi-out connectors.

Also, the obvious not everyone who gets into RGB owns a soldering iron. Maybe they should as far as modding goes but that's just my opinionated conjecture. Not to be rude with my imitation of your sarcastic tone at the top but it's quite annoying seeing it in every single thread.

I like how you completely dismissed my point about people not wanting to damage their console shells without making any actual effort to refute it.

By your logic, it would be perfectly fine to cut out the entire rear of the console shell and just hotglue the connectors to the bottom shell, because who cares? It's in the back and nobody will ever see it.

Isn't it 8 inputs?

'in good shape' apparently means something different to you. Mine still functions perfectly and looks aesthetically pleasing from the front and sides. It is still structurally sound.

God Speed my friend. I think the Plus model has OSD. Also Its heavy as fuck.

>getting SCART cables in the first place
I am mostly with you, RIT bro, but in my case I ordered SCART connectors cheap online and make my own cables. It's convenient to cram the resistors and caps into a SCART plug.

and I can sell them fit twenty bucks online

The profit stealing is good and funny, but I just add the needed components inside my consoles (capacitors, resistors, whatever else) and make things simple.

The setup is almost complete. I need to make a couple more cables and rgb mod my duo and it'll be good to go.
>>
>>2861990
I thought about doing that and running my systems through an old stereo receiver as a switch, but I'm a lazy man. Making SCART cables was easier. I already had composite or svideo cables, just had to bust the proprietary ones open.
>>
>>2861975
Might be thought it was 7 but i could be wrong. All i know is it also has a vga out for capture purposes which was a nice addition.
>>
>>2861974
Too far for my blood, although i really want one mainly for the size for splitscreen gaming, and itd be 4x the price just for shipping.
>>
>>2861981
yeah I guess it does. neat :^)

The official one that came with mine is +6VDC, 2.5A; Center positive, with what I am almost positive is a type M connector. Outer diameter is definitely 5.5mm, though it can be difficult to discern between 2.1 and 2.5 mm. Still pretty sure it's 2.1, and as such a type M.

>Intellivision hiding behind the Genesis
Cute
Aside from the monitor being ever so slightly off center and missing the front face, it looks perfect.

For the price difference and possible error in power supply purchase i thi k im just going to buy the CTCA-3 i found on ebay for $50ish plus shipping. Comes complete with power supply. Saving me the hassle. And maybe just buy the ctca2 for shits cause its only $10

My main concern right now is purchasing the proper switches as i stated above. For the setup. I think ive found all the ones i need just have to actually buy them.

My stereo receiver and switch. I use the little green switch for composite video sources since I have the output from my receiver going to csync. Took these when I was redoing the wiring about two weeks ago (I thought of a better and more efficient way to wire everything in).

P.S.
If you are making SCART cables instead of buying the stupidly priced pre-made ones by recycling the old multi-out plugs, I don't take too much issue with it. Except that SCART switches are still stupidly expensive and you aren't aiming for SCART into a PVM or BVM. Meanwhile, RCA -> BNC adapters are cheap, plentiful, and you only need as many as the inputs on your BVM.
>>
>>2861892
Yeah, it's not because we all use CRT's and feel better than people who use LCD's for retro games, it's because of me. I probably caused the holocaust too.
>>
>>2862113
Going for RCA or BNC for termination on cables also gives you the "easy" option of using something like an Extron Crosspoint as a switch.
It'll take up a shit load of space, but you sure as hell don't have to worry about interference and the like.

Asking for options, would it be safe to puta 20" BVM (~80lbs) on top of a 24" BVM.???

I'd put the speakers here so the tv-bench doesn't block sound
>>
>>2862405
Ahhh gotcha no that im not worried about i plan on building a desk myself out of solid wood, non of that fiberboard stuff. As long as the monitor can handle the weight of the smaller one on top of it then ill be okay.
