Some of the auto scrolling stages where you stay still but the environment moves(thinking Shinobi 3) aren't bad but I never like the ones where the screen moves to the right and you have to move with it.

I hate the both versions of this. Horizontal and vertical. I mean what's killing you as the screen moves? It's so shitty.

Metal Slug was probably the first game is can think of that gave a justification and most modern games will give a reason versus "get going faggot".
